The system structure liftinfotainment The components 1 The system structure The liftinfotainment system consists of three components. There are clients (editing), The client is the liftinfotainment software, which is used to edit and administer the content and to control the playback devices. a server The server is responsible for data management and for the implementation of the business logic. and the players. The player is used to display the contents. It is typically connected to a plasma or LCD monitor and plays back the configured contents. Client and server exchange data via a socket connection (Borland Socket Server). This is by default realized via the port 211. The server communicates with the player via the FTP protocol. In addition, remote access to the players from the clients is possible (e. g. to restart the playback devices or to view a player screenshot at the client). Remote access takes place via a socket connection at port

The system structure Variants of the system structure The hardware protection key (dongle) Variants of the system structure The following configuration combinations are possible. 1. Client and server reside on the same computer. The player/players is/are external. 2. Several clients access a separate server. server The server operates one or several separate players. client player The hardware protection key (dongle) The software is protected against a licence offence by means of a hardware protection key. You shall get this key along with the software. For full system operation the hardware protection key needs to be plugged into the computer on which the liftinfotainment server is installed. For perfect function of the protection key the necessary drivers must be installed prior to use. 5

The programme start liftinfotainment system 2 The programme start After the first start of the programme you need to determine which server you want to access. The adjacent dialogueue box will appear. The standard installation installs the server to your PC. If you do not want to put the server on a central company server please put in the IP address This IP address specifies your own PC. After input of your own IP address do not checkmark connection via HTTP. If you now confirm with OK, the adjacent login dialogue will appear: For the first login please use the following data: Example: The area playbacks is activated: login name: password: admin admin Checkmark save login if the programme shall memorise the login name (Note: The password will not be saved.). The software s user interface is similar to the programme MS-Outlook and divided into three areas: playbacks, station overview and directory structure. Switch between the fields by clicking on the bottom left part of the according entry. The relevant activated area will be highlighted in orange. The area playbacks consists of a calendar into which the playbacks for the respective player are entered. The station overview provides an overview on all stations and their occupancy. In the directory structure all basic work is done prior to editing your playbacks. 6

The directory structure 3.1 Working with the directory structure 3 The liftinfotainment directory structure 3.1 Working with the directory structure On the left side, the directory structure displays the directories you set up; the right side displays the respective content. The window on the right side is called list or grid. You can configure the list display in many ways. A few examples: Sorting You can sort the list by columns. Click on the column header. In the example below, we clicked on the column header Name to sort by this field. Sorted in ascending order: Click on the column header once more to sort the list in descending order. Sorted in descending order: 7

The directory structure 3.1 Working with the directory structure You can also sort by several columns. Press and hold the Shift key. If you want to sort by the column Type in ascending order first and next by the column Name in descending order, you need to click the column Type twice and then, while holding the pressed Shift key down, you click once on the column header Name. Sorting first by Type (descending), then by Name (ascending). Press the Ctrl key to deactivate sorting by column Grouping You can sort the list by columns to create a tree-like view. Similar entries of a column will be grouped together. To group, simply drag a column header into the upper grouping area. Three types are available: Directories, movie files and image files. This list is grouped by type. Similar types are summarized. To deactivate a grouping, drag the column name from the grouping area back into the list header. 8

The directory structure 3.1 Working with the directory structure Filter You can filter the list by certain criteria. In the following example, only the image files are displayed. Unfiltered: Filtered by type sample case Berlin Content : + To filter a list, click on the filter symbol in the column header. A list with filter criteria options will be opened. Select the required criterion. To remove the filter, select the entry (All ) in the extended list. All entries will be shown Define column width You can easily change the column width by positioning the mouse in the column header on the line between two columns. When the mouse pointer changes, press the left mouse button to adjust the column width. Note: You can also filter a list by several columns. 9

The directory structure 3.2 The directory elements 3.2 The elements Playback content The playblack content is in fact the central element of the system. The playback content represents anything which can be displayed later. In the standard configuration, the following can be displayed (examples): images (*.jpg, *.gif, *.bmp, etc.) movies (*.avi, *.mpg, *.wmv, etc.) PowerPoint presentations (*.ppt) *.pdf files flash animations (*.swf) websites HTML pages (*.html, *.htm) ticker customized slides with free text The playback content is defined by playback objects. All contents which shall be displayed first need to be imported New playback template The playback template enables you to create complete animations and sequences. You can link screen splittings with playback contents. If you want to create a playback plan at a later date, you can generate it from an already defined template and thus considerably quicken the process User Here all users of the system are saved. Use the element New user to create a new user for the usage of lift- INFOtainment. This user will receive its own ID to be able to log into the system. It is possible to restrict the access to certain areas. This is accomplished by allocating certain access rights (e. g. read-only rights). Note: Each user will need its own license. If you don t have a sufficient amount of licenses, you may not be able to create a new user Screen splitting Screen splitting determines how much content is displayed on one screen and in which format. Any useful combination is possible. The already implemented screen splitting options are the most common ones e. g. horizontal splitting into two, three or four parts, etc. However, any other screen splitting defined by yourselves may be added Station One station corresponds to one playback device (PC, door plate with embedded PC). The liftinfotainment system has two pre-configured station types: The station type plasma screen and the station type doorplate. This differentiation is necessary, as doorplates can only display simple graphics and, for example, no movies. The plasma screens, however, can display all Windows Media Player formats. Note: This allocation is pre-configured by default, but can be modified any time. Each station requires its own license. If you don t have a sufficient amount of licenses, you may not be able to create a new station. 10

The directory structure 3.2 The directory elements 3.3 The most important actions Station group One station group combines several stations. This may be useful for several applications. If you group similar stations, for example, you can define one playback content for the entire group. Advantage: You don t need to send the playback to each station individually, but only to the group one time. Another possibility would be to group several doorplates to be able to automatically generate a room overview on one single plasma screen. It is important to know that one station can be a part of several groups. 3.3 The most important actions Creating new elements You may create a new directory element by positioning the mouse in the large window on the right hand side and open the mouse menu by clicking on the right button. The following pop-up menu is displayed: Now you may choose the respective element and define it according to your requirements: Adding playback content Playback content are elements which are displayed on the display surfaces. This includes movies, images, animations, PowerPoint presentations and many more. In order to be able to display a particular content on a player (e. g. an *.avi film on a display) the respective file needs to be imported to the liftinfotainment software. 11

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions For adding a new playback content switch to the directory structure and select a directory to store the new playback content. Note: Of course, the content may also be shifted to another folder later. In the example we selected the folder Playback contents. Right-click the empty list area on the right side. A pop-up menu is displayed. Please select new new playback content. Now you may select a format type: 12

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions We selected movie file. Doubleclick on the according entry. The following entry mask is displayed: As a rule, you first click on the three periods in Source to select a film clip from your hard disk. You can also mark more than one movie; these will be imported on succession without the need to re-invoke this dialogue every time. 13

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions liftinfotainment will recognize the duration of the clip as well as its width and height in pixels autonomously. In case the movie attributes are not recognized, the reason may be that you don t have the suitable codec for this movie installed on your PC. You can check this easily by trying to start the according movie with Windows Media Player. If the movie cannot be displayed using the Media Player, you are missing the according codec. In this case, liftinfotainment will not be able to autonomously detect the movie attributes. You will have to download the missing codecs, e. g. from the website The title bar shows that this is a multi import. You can see that you are currently editing file 1 of 2. If you want to skip this file, simply click on Cancel. This will automatically take you to the mask for the next file. If you want to cancel the entire import, click on the x on the top right of the screen. As we didn t previously enter a name, the name of the file is used automatically. We can see that the size of the film is 1 MB and we can also view the automatically obtained values. If necessary, any specifications can still be modified. The name must be unique in the system. If there is a different playback content with the same name, it must be changed now. You also have the option to enter a clip description. Click on OK to have the system perform the import. The system will perform five steps. A dialogue box will inform you about the current status. 14

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions Now, the playback content is stored in your system. You will also find an according entry in the directory structure. If you performed a multi import, you will return to the previous mask with the next content Adding a station If you want to add a new station (doorplate of a room, plasma screen, or similar) it is first necessary to set up and configure the available playback device. It will need an IP address which you have to enter into liftinfotainment. Furthermore, the player must be included in the LAN network and the player must be accessible from your computer to enable the transfer of content. For creating the new station in liftinfotainment, right-click with the mouse button into the right window and select from the menu new and then new station. 15

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions For the configuration, currently only the first two tabs Address and Station settings of the following mask are relevant. Allocate any desired (but a unique) station name. Select the respective station type, e. g. plasma, lift, door plates. Enter the IP address of the playback computer into the according field. The rest of the fields are purely informative and not mandatory. 16

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions The tab Station settings has two important specifications: The time for the regular restart and the data transmission interval. Restart will define the interval after which the player will reboot. Example: If the player is supposed to restart daily at 1 a. m., you can specify the date in this field according to the graphic. Restarts will guarantee that the memory of the player is regularly set to zero and thus practically defragmented. In the section Data transmission you specify the turns, in which the system will transmit the playbacks and contents to the playback device. Please note that you can also specify how many days in advance the contents must be transmitted. If you transmit daily, it would be a good idea to only transmit one day in advance, considering the network utilization. If you only transmit weekly, you should transmit the content at least for the following seven days. Regardless of these set preferences, you can always transmit the playback manually. The fallback playback is mainly used for lift configurations. Please select the matching lift template. The fallback playback ensures that the lift always shows the lift-relevant information, even if there is no date or entry Grouping stations For displaying an identical playback on several display areas on a regular basis, e. g. if a room has several doorplates or if several screens shall display the same advertisements, it makes sense to form a station group from the relevant stations. First of all, select Directory structure, then the folder Stations and then the sub-folder Station groups. Right-click into the right window. The usual menu will open from which you may select under new new station group. 17

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions A dialogue will open where you may enter the name of the new station group. In the example we call it liftinfotainment. Now right-click into the area Stations of group and select allocate new station. 18

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions All stations created so far will appear and you may select from this list those which shall be allocated to the new station group liftinfotainment. If you hold the Ctrl key pressed you may mark several stations. Once you allocated the stations you may see the following dialogue: Creating screen splitting (not for liftinfotainment) In addition to the already existing screen splittings you may configure individual split screens. Please make sure that you define the screen splitting prior to creating the respective playback. Open the folder Screen splittings, right-click into the right area and select from the menu new new screen splitting. 19

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions In the following dialogue box you may enter the name of the new screen splitting. It is advisable to choose a significant name. Click on Next. In the next dialogue you may enter the number of windows into which you should like to split the image; in the example it is two: 20

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions In the following step you determine the dimensions for the first window. The standard positioning is defined in percent starting from the respective edge of the image. In the example we choose an equal proportion with vertical division and therefore set 50 % width. If desired, you may also enter a standard playback content here which will always be displayed in this window. Click on Next and you will see that liftinfotainment autonomously calculated the second window. 21

The directory structure 3.3 The most important actions After that step you may allocate a name to this screen splitting and save it all: Creating a playback template Often used playbacks are preferably saved as a playback template. Thus you may save the time for creating the same plan over and over again. Even if it is not always the same playback that is used, it is worth transforming it into a template as then you only need to change particular elements instead of entirely rearranging all files from new. Allocate a name to the template and add a short description, if desired. Right-click into the right area within the folder Playback templates and open the mouse menu. Select new new playback template. 22

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks 4 Playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Within this view you may edit, change and delete playbacks. You may enter recurring item and copy entries Creating a playback To create a playback, you must first switch to the area playbacks. First of all, select the station for which you want to create a playback in the top left area of the screen, called stations. In this example, the station with the name playback computer is selected. You may choose between a 1-day, 5-day or 7-day view. Click the according option button on the left side below the calendar. You want to create a playback entry for Monday, May 30th. Open an area in the weekly view on Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by pressing the mouse button and dragging the area accordingly. Right-click into the marked area. 23

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks The following menu is displayed: Select new from the menu. Use the wizard to create a playback in several steps. Here are the individual steps: 24

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks The period already shows the default entry from the marked weekly view. This can be changed, of course. If necessary, set the date and the required period and click on Next. Note: Individual entries may not overlap. The system will acknowledge overlapping times with an error message and you will be asked to change the data. Determine how many blocks the playback entry should have. If you are configuring a lift, only one playback block may be selected. If you want to show three movies alternatively, for example, enter three playback blocks. In this mask, you can also delete or move playback blocks directly. In our example, we just want to show the previously imported movie, so we only use one playback block. Click on Next. 25

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Create the screen splitting and the image content. Click on the button with the three periods at Screen splitting. In the following dialogue box, select full screen. Click on OK. You selected a splitting with one image (full screen), so you can now define exactly one content (for window no. 1). For a lift configuration it is imperative to always choose full screen! 26

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Click on the three periods at Window No. 1 and select the previously defined playback content. The dialogue box will display the following: You selected the screen splitting full screen and put the according movie into this window. There is a pre-defined playback length of 22 seconds. You can overwrite this by entering a different value in the field different playback length. If you want to show the movie only for 1.5 minutes, simply enter 90 (for ninety seconds) in the field for the different playback length. If the calculated playback length is ok, just leave the field with the different playback length empty. Then click on Next. 27

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Now you may enter more specifications regarding your playback block and determine if you want the file played back with sound. You can also enter if the movie should be displayed with the largest view possible. Note: The size is always adjusted proportionally the results will never be distorted length or widthwise. However, depending on the movie resolution, black margins may occur. Now click on Next. The last page of the wizard is displayed. 28

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks To accept the playback entry, click on Save. This will take you to the weekly view and the just created entry is saved. You can now still move the playback or change the start or end time. Use the mouse to perform this. When you click on the entry, you can drag this entry to another position by pressing the left mouse button. You can change the start time by clicking on the top border of the entry while pressing the left mouse button. The end time is changed the same way. Right-click a playback entry to display the context menu, which displays further options, e. g. the preview function. Select the preview function to preview the created playback on your computer. 29

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks The preview will show the playback in 1024 x 768 pixels. This is the configured size for the playback devices. You need MS Internet Explorer to use the preview function. 30

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Creating a ticker For creating a ticker please choose a screen splitting with ticker, e. g. full screen with ticker. The next step is to type the ticker text into the pre-defined window ticker : 31

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks You may now format the ticker text. Click on the three periods at Font characteristics (see image 1, page 31, Creating a ticker ): 32

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Now you may determine the font, its distance, height, colour etc. Furthermore, you may determine the background colour of the ticker: By clicking on Save you have now created an entry with ticker. 33

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Changing playbacks An existing playback may be changed at any time. Doubleclick on the respective entry in the view Playbacks. A dialogue box named edit playlist item will open. Checkmark show playback block details in steps and click Next : 34

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Deleting a playback block If you want to delete one of the blocks from the playback, mark the block and click on the red cross at the right edge. The element will disappear. If you now click on Save the change will be saved. 35

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Adding a playback block For adding a playback block click on the No. of playback blocks within the second step of the dialogue box and indicate, by using the arrow buttons, how many you need all in all. Automatically, empty blocks to be defined will appear in the view. Now double-click on the new empty item, select screen splitting and playback content as previously and save all. 36

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Changing the playback block sequence If you realised after the preview that the sequence of files needs to be changed, act as described in step 2 of the playback dialogue. Mark the file that needs to be shifted. By means of the coloured arrows at the right edge you may shift the element upwards or downwards. 37

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Copying playbacks If you want to use an existing playback on another day you need not configure it once again but may simply copy it. 38

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Copying a day If you want to display the entire playback of one day on another day as well, just act as follows: Right-click on the respective day item in the view playbacks and select copy complete day. Then select the day to which the plan shall be copied: 39

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks As you can see you may also indicate a period of time within which you may select particular days to which the playback shall be copied. If you selected several days and are not sure whether all of them are still free from entries you may first start a test. The software will then check whether the entry may be copied to the selected days without any restriction. In our example we selected the period from June 14th, 2006 June 31st, 2006 and the days Monday and Thursday. If it is not possible to copy to all days, you may have a look at details to find out on which days there are collisions of dates. If everything is fine, click on Close and then on Copy. The feedback confirms that the playback has been copied to all days. 40

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks Copying a week If you want to copy the entries of an entire week, just act as described under for copying a day, however, select copy complete week from the pop-up menu. In the following dialogue box you may indicate the calendar weeks to which the week entry shall be copied. You may also select only particular days of the week which shall be duplicated. In the example we copy the week 40 to week 41, namely only the days Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. 41

The playbacks 4.1 Working with playbacks 4.2 Data transmission Here you may also test the procedure in advance without definitely entering the data into the days. Click on Copy and as feedback you shall get in information about the result of the action Copying a playback within one day If you want to display a playback several times a day with breaks you may copy an existing entry also for the same day. Hold the entry while pressing the mouse button and at the same time press the Ctrl key. Then drag the entry to the desired time using the mouse. Thus it will be copied automatically. 4.2 Data transmission To display the created playbacks to the connected displays, you must transmit the data to the players. The system will either send the data on a scheduled or on a manual basis. This means that you determine a fix transmission interval which makes sure that always the up-to-date playbacks are available on the players. In addition, however, you may also initiate a direct manual transmission for changes at short notice. The programme which is responsible for data transmission is named Distribute Deamon. If you have installed the liftinfotainment server and client on your computer you need to start the Distribute Deamon manually. In order to automatise the start, put a shortcut of the programme, which you will find in Windows Start All programmes liftinfotainment, into the autostart group under All programmes. Thus you make sure that the Deamon will always run when you are logged into the computer. If the liftinfotainment server is installed on a separate company server or if the computer with the serverclient installation is being used by several users, you should use the network version of the Distribute Deamon. Note: Please contact us so that we may configure your optimum system configuration Automatic transmission The automatic transmission is set individually for each player, as already described above in the section regarding creation of a new station (see section 3.3.3). You may set it using the second tab of station characteristics Station settings. Hinweis: Once a content has been transmitted, it will not be sent again. The system will verify during the transmission, if content has already been stored at the player and will then not resend it. This will lower traffic significantly, thus reducing the loading time. 42

The playbacks 4.2 Data transmission Manual transmission To transmit the playbacks to the players, you must first start the transmission programme Distribute Deamon. This programme can be found in the start menu, programme group liftinfotainment, at the entry Start Distribute Daemon. Please run this programme. Upon programme start the Deamon will check whether a transmission is necessary. So if you have determined a transmission interval for your station, the Deamon will perform a transmission to the station after start. If you selected only manual transmission within the station parameters, the Deamon will wait for a manual request for transmission. The menu item Actions in the editorial software has the entry Transmit station data manually. Please select this menu item or use the shortcut key Ctrl F12. Mark the stations for transmission by setting a checkmark. You also need to determine how many days in advance the transmission should take place. Then click on Transmit. To check if everything runs smoothly, you can also pull the Distribute Daemon to the foreground and check the log about the current course of events. After the transmission, the new content is available at the playback device/s. 43

The station overview 5 The station overview In the view Station overview you may now get an overview on the assigned stations. Just select the period of time you want to see at the left edge. You may also indicate the time interval that shall be displayed in the time bar underneath. If you now want to change from the total overview of stations to the calendar of one particular playback station, just double-click to one day of the respective station and you will automatically enter the daily playback of the selected player. 44

liftinfotainment Creating new playback plan entry Please confirm the next step with Next as well. 64

liftinfotainment Creating new playback plan entry Please select for window No. 1 the playback content liftinfotainment. The screen splitting must be set to full screen, as the layout is adapted to the display resolution! Please confirm with Next. 65

liftinfotainment Creating new playback plan entry In step 4 layout-specific settings as for example ticker, streaming, standard image, RSS feeds, etc. can be changed. 66

liftinfotainment Creating new playback plan entry Please confirm with Next and then with Save. After the entry was saved in the database, the date will appear in the calendar. 67

liftinfotainment Creating new playback plan entry For informing the player of the changed settings of the station, please select transmit station data manually from the menu Actions. A window will open where all available playback computers are displayed. Please select your playback player which shall display the information and confirm with the button Transmit. 68

Special applications Booking and labelling rooms 6.2 Special applications Booking and labelling rooms Select the room for which you want to book an event in the view playback plans. Now search for the day of the event in the left column of the calendar. In our example it is Monday, October 31st, Mark the intended period of the event, right-click into the mark and select new (door plate) : 69

Special applications Booking and labelling rooms In the following dialogue box you may once again change the period and indicate whether the event shall be displayed at the room in advance and, if yes, how long in advance. Now click on Next. In the following window type the text which shall be displayed on the doorplate into the field Doorplate text. As a rule this will be the name of the event. 70

Special applications 6.3 Creating recurring item If you want to add the logo of the customer who is organising the event, just select the respective file from Source. If the logo is too large it will automatically reduced proportionally for the display. Now click on Next and your entry is saved. In the following view of the calendar you may check the entry and make sure that it is correctly displayed by means of the preview function (see chapter 4.5, page 27). 6.3 Creating recurring item If an event takes place on a regular basis, you may create a sequence date. Just create a booking as described under 6.2 and checkmark Sequence date in the first dialogue window. Then further entry options will appear. In the example we determine that starting from now until April 2006 the room will be booked each Monday. After clicking on Next you can once again see the defined time: 71

Special applications 6.3 Creating recurring item Now you may first test whether all intended dates are available. Just click on Test. If the test run was successful, save the date. 72

Special applications 6.4 Creating playback plans for station groups 6.4 Creating playback plans for station groups For creating an own playback plan for this station group lift- INFOtainment now switch to the view Playback plans. Select the day for which you want to create a plan and open the menu by a right-click on the respective time. Select new (quick creation of several stations). The following dialogue box will appear: Click on adding from station group(s) and select the group liftinfotainment. Now go through the dialogue step by step and create, as described above, a playback plan entry. This will be automatically created for all stations of the group. 73

Functional test 7.1 Checking availability of the player 7 Functional test 7.1 Checking availability of the player Besides the standard methods, such as pinging the player via the command line to check if it is available, you may also use the programme-internal remote access function. This function is available in the menu item Actions, Remote access to players. Select your destination device and click on Connect. If the player is available, an according message is displayed. 74

Functional test 7.1 Checking availability of the player 7.2 Check current display Please note that the communication to the destination computer is performed via port All included firewalls must enable this port. If the playback device is not available, please check the according configuration of the firewalls first. Then try to reach the player with a ping command from the command line. If you can t reach the player via pinging, your network is not configured correctly. If the ping is successful and the liftinfotainment software still can t reach the player, the error will most probably lie in a firewall problem. In case of doubt, please consult your administrator. 7.2 Checking current display If you want to make sure that a connected display displays the desired image, you may do a screenshot of the player via remote access. Select Actions Remote access to players. Mark the respective player and click on Screenshot. You will now see what is currently displayed on the display. If you want to establish a direct cable connection from your editorial computer to your playback device, you must note two items above all: You will need a so-called cross cable. Furthermore, the IP addresses of the player and of your PC must be in the same range. Example: PC IP: Player IP: The first three numbers must be the same; the fourth number may be different. Pinging the destination computer will usually solve problems. If pinging is not successful, you have a network configuration problem. 75
