7 THE BASICS DIGITAL DIRECTORIES 101 A digital directory is a software powered system that consists of hardware, software and graphic design THE DIGITAL DIRECTORY REVOLUTION The most-important questions are What will digital signage do for me? How can I justify the purchase? Digital directories can serve two critical purposes. By advertising your highest-margin products or services, they will drive your sales. And what is your most important asset? For most companies, it s the employees. Digital directories can facilitate sharing your most critical bulletins and notifications with your employees. Additionally, an interactive, digital sign that features pinch-andzoom, touch-screen maps can provide turn-by-turn directions to any off- or on-premise destination. If your customers can t find you, they can t buy from you! Start with a commercial-grade display that s connected via an HDMI cable to a media player. A media player is a small computer that houses the software that controls and plays the digital directory s content. There are extensive numbers of digital directory options, each contain pros and cons, so here are a few considerations to assist your selection process. Ideally, you want fully configured software that s preloaded into your media player. The software will control all directory listings through a web-based dashboard, which you can access via any mobile device (iphone and Android) or computer. Easy updating will make day to day content management simple and efficient. As your digital directory evolves, your software needs will also increase. Therefore it is best to make your initial investment sufficient to cover future probabilities for equipment and software flexibility. For example, your facility has multi-floors and entrances. This could be as simple as your logo, directory listing and local news or weather feeds. Here are five of the most commonly desired types of information. 1 Here you can list the amount of property space available, leasing options, building-maintenance options and post images. Of course, you ll want to prominently display your company logo and your most popular brand names. We ll ensure that your branding consistently appears throughout your entire system. Here you include all of your visuals, and they can be set to rotate. Both local and national news, weather alerts and breaking Wall Street-related stories can be interspersed. On the main floor, you want your customers to easily navigate to whichever floor they need. The directory can be structured by floor, destination name and/or suite number. Images and contact information can be included. 9 THE BASICS DIGITAL DIRECTORIES key tips that will help you to get the most out of a digital directory system BEST PRACTICES FOR DIGITAL DIRECTORY DESIGN You re not alone. You ll share your goals with us, and together we ll determine how to custom-design a directory to satisfy all of your requirements. Here are some suggestions. The two available orientations are portrait and landscape. Your choice will depend on your total number of listings, the size of the display and the amount of space available for the display. You may also want to consider placing multiple displays. It might seem too obvious, but legibility is the most important aspect of your digital directory. The directory font sizes must be large enough to be recognizable from a distance and readable up close. Individuals will typically read it from a few feet away. A sans-serif font will probably need to be in a point size. Err on the side of too large, in consideration for an aging population and people with limited vision. For the visual layout of the directory listings, we recommended a 60/40 balance of white space and actual content. This balances the need for both appropriate size and comfortable reading. Reserve bold fonts and images, varying colors and sizes to your most important information. Don t feel obligated to fill the entire screen. Images should be large, eye-catching, and high-resolution. A map layout of your building is highly recommended to help visitors know where they are and where they need to go. You can post images of the building or a specific practitioner listed in the directory. Make sure you have permission to use any images. Tenant descriptions and contact information might be appropriate. The digital directory s theme should align with all of your promotional materials and your website. This includes font styles, your logo and color palette. If multiple businesses are listed, we always suggest a professional layout and more generic colors. Directory listings can be organized many ways: by category, suite number, floor or alphabetized. If you choose the category approach, alphabetize the listings in each category. The categories should be presented in a larger font and a different color than the subsequent tenants. Alternate font styles simplify reading. Make sure your digital-directory design coincides with your overall design goals. Although the directory does serve a branding function, it primarily should be informational, so don t go overboard with creativity. Consistency is key. 8

Even if the format is exactly how you want it, the actual content will change on a weekly, daily or even hourly basis. Fortunately, these changes can be easily handled by someone with no graphic-design experience. 14 CASE HISTORIES PRACTICAL EXAMPLES OF DIGITAL SIGNAGE SEEING IS BELIEVING All of the general guidelines above will help you implement your optimum system, but here are some real-life case histories from customers. They will tell you the challenges they faced and exactly how our system provided the solutions. Waytouch Premier touch screen kiosks with navigation turn by turn maps were used to help improve patient experiences GCUH is the third-largest hospital in Queensland, Australia, with 8,000 rooms, 250 departments and 59 floors in 8 buildings. They wanted us to map the entire campus and also include a mobile wayfinder for their 24/7 facility. The overall campus encompasses 1.83 million square feet of floor space. GCUH recognized the massive challenge. Every day, specific rooms or even entire departments could be frequently moved around, expanded, or shrunk. Internal staff would need to find non-public rooms; in-patient areas would be closed after visiting hours, and some departments would not open on weekends. GCUH needed to guide individuals with easily retrieved, real-time, directional information. Plus, the region faced some language barriers. A seamless solution seemed insurmountable. Amazingly, Waytouch Premier software satisfied 100% of these needs. The map editor handled floor- plan updates for both the kiosks, mobile, private/public pathway re-routing and route scheduling. The content editor provided all content/ interface updates in five major languages, and automatically connected any live events to the floor map. The designer-controlled layout provided updates beyond template limitations. The KMS-monitored player status offered flexible scheduling rules. Staff management helped 19 private floors to be accessed with a login privilege. Rod Alderton, who works for GCUH s contractor, Command Australia, reported the following results. Despite a three-month project delay, the wayfinding system still launched its kiosk testing two months ahead of the grand opening. After a halfday of training, CA mastered the user-friendly backend system and proficiently published several rounds of mapping changes, language translations and template designs during the two-week installation. The onsite integrator reported that, since opening, a large number of people were using the wayfinding kiosk everyone, including the elderly. Its more than 200 stores span nearly a million square feet of space and attract more than 35,000 daily visitors. The management team wanted a state-of-the-art solution to replace their expensive-to-maintain, antiquated, analog signage system. The solution required a centralized, content-management system and an advertising platform that would generate ROI from external advertising agencies. Additionally, all content needed to be presented in both German and English to provide orientation, shopping information and promotions. NFC integration on kiosks was required to maximize their existing, customer-relation system: Shoppers are encouraged to swipe the NFC tag, check their earned reward points, receive individual promotion recommendations and start a new round of shopping. The new system needed to increase this engagement and maximize the application with a strong, statistically analyzed return. Handicap-preferred routes throughout the center required the touchscreen interface to be wheelchair friendly and accessible. All content needed to be handled internally, including the ability to edit floor maps for future structural modifications. Due to the extensive capabilities the Waytouch Premier supports, Shopping City selected it for the its mall wayfinding system. The hardware features 18 touchscreen Waytouch Premier wayfinding kiosk units (70 and 80 inches wide), which were installed in less than two months. The solution surpassed both the timeframe and budgetary requirements. According to estimates, advertising increased by approximately 30% in less than two months.
