3 NOTES FOR CMOS DEVICES 1 VOLTAGE APPLICATION WAVEFORM AT INPUT PIN Waveform distortion due to input noise or a reflected wave may cause malfunction. If the input of the CMOS device stays in the area between VIL (MAX) and VIH (MIN) due to noise, etc., the device may malfunction. Take care to prevent chattering noise from entering the device when the input level is fixed, and also in the transition period when the input level passes through the area between VIL (MAX) and VIH (MIN). 2 HANDLING OF UNUSED INPUT PINS Unconnected CMOS device inputs can be cause of malfunction. If an input pin is unconnected, it is possible that an internal input level may be generated due to noise, etc., causing malfunction. CMOS devices behave differently than Bipolar or NMOS devices. Input levels of CMOS devices must be fixed high or low by using pull-up or pull-down circuitry. Each unused pin should be connected to VDD or GND via a resistor if there is a possibility that it will be an output pin. All handling related to unused pins must be judged separately for each device and according to related specifications governing the device. 3 PRECAUTION AGAINST ESD A strong electric field, when exposed to a MOS device, can cause destruction of the gate oxide and ultimately degrade the device operation. Steps must be taken to stop generation of static electricity as much as possible, and quickly dissipate it when it has occurred. Environmental control must be adequate. When it is dry, a humidifier should be used. It is recommended to avoid using insulators that easily build up static electricity. Semiconductor devices must be stored and transported in an anti-static container, static shielding bag or conductive material. All test and measurement tools including work benches and floors should be grounded. The operator should be grounded using a wrist strap. Semiconductor devices must not be touched with bare hands. Similar precautions need to be taken for PW boards with mounted semiconductor devices. 4 STATUS BEFORE INITIALIZATION Power-on does not necessarily define the initial status of a MOS device. Immediately after the power source is turned ON, devices with reset functions have not yet been initialized. Hence, power-on does not guarantee output pin levels, I/O settings or contents of registers. A device is not initialized until the reset signal is received. A reset operation must be executed immediately after power-on for devices with reset functions. 5 POWER ON/OFF SEQUENCE In the case of a device that uses different power supplies for the internal operation and external interface, as a rule, switch on the external power supply after switching on the internal power supply. When switching the power supply off, as a rule, switch off the external power supply and then the internal power supply. Use of the reverse power on/off sequences may result in the application of an overvoltage to the internal elements of the device, causing malfunction and degradation of internal elements due to the passage of an abnormal current. The correct power on/off sequence must be judged separately for each device and according to related specifications governing the device. 6 INPUT OF SIGNAL DURING POWER OFF STATE Do not input signals or an I/O pull-up power supply while the device is not powered. The current injection that results from input of such a signal or I/O pull-up power supply may cause malfunction and the abnormal current that passes in the device at this time may cause degradation of internal elements. Input of signals during the power off state must be judged separately for each device and according to related specifications governing the device. User s Manual U1789EJ2VUD 3

14 CHAPTER 1 OUTLINE <R> The μpd78f711 and 78F712 are 8-bit single-chip microcontrollers which use a 78K/ CPU core and incorporate peripheral functions, such as ROM/RAM, a timer/counter, a serial interface, an A/D converter, and a watchdog timer. The μpd78f711 and 78F712 are products of a series developed for motor applications performing 2-chip control and which specializes in motor control. They incorporate a 1-bit inverter control timer (CHAPTER 6) that enables PWM output with dead time and a Hi-Z output controller (CHAPTER 12) that controls the high impedance (Hi-Z) of 6- phase PWM for fail-safe. Furthermore, they are equipped with a real-time output port (CHAPTER 1) for controlling a stepping motor or a DC inverter (12 excitation), and achieve a high cost performance for various motor applications. 14 User s Manual U1789EJ2VUD

(1) Port mode P to P3 function as a 4-bit I/O port. P to P3 can be set to input or output in 1-bit units using port mode register (PM). Use of an on-chip pull-up resistor can be specified by pull-up resistor option register (PU). Even when the A/D converter is not used, always use this pin with the same potential as the VSS pin RESET This is the active-low system reset input pin X1 and X2 These are the pins for connecting a resonator for the X1 input clock. When supplying an external clock, input a signal to the X1 pin and input the inverse signal to the X2 pin. Remark The X1 and X2 pins of the product with an on-chip debug function (part number pending) can be used to set the on-chip debug mode when the on-chip debug function is used. For details, see CHAPTER 23 ON-CHIP DEBUG FUNCTION VDD The positive power supply pin VSS The ground potential pin FLMD This pin sets the flash memory programming mode. Normally, it is addressed with the program counter (PC). μpd78f711 and 78F712 products incorporate internal ROM (flash memory), as shown below. Table 3-1. The 32-byte area FEEH to FEFFH is assigned to four general-purpose register banks consisting of eight 8-bit registers per one bank. This area cannot be used as a program area in which instructions are written and executed. The internal high-speed RAM can also be used as a stack memory Special function register (SFR) area On-chip peripheral hardware special function registers (SFRs) are allocated in the area FFH to FFFFH (see Table 3-3 Special Function Register List in Special function registers (SFRs)). Caution Do not access addresses to which SFRs are not assigned Data memory addressing Addressing refers to the method of specifying the address of the instruction to be executed next or the address of the register or memory relevant to the execution of instructions. Several addressing modes are provided for addressing the memory relevant to the execution of instructions for the μpd78f711 and 78F712, based on operability and other considerations. For areas containing data memory in particular, special addressing methods designed for the functions of special function registers (SFR) and generalpurpose registers are available for use. 34 CHAPTER 3 CPU ARCHITECTURE 3.2 Processor Registers The μpd78f711 and 78F712 products incorporate the following processor registers Control registers The control registers control the program sequence, statuses and stack memory. The control registers consist of a program counter (PC), a program status word (PSW) and a stack pointer (SP). (1) Program counter (PC) The program counter is a 16-bit register that holds the address information of the next program to be executed. In normal operation, the PC is automatically incremented according to the number of bytes of the instruction to be fetched. When a branch instruction is executed, immediate data and register contents are set. RESET input sets the reset vector table values at addresses H and 1H to the program counter. Figure 3-5. Program status word contents are automatically stacked upon interrupt request generation or PUSH PSW instruction execution and are restored upon execution of the RETB, RETI and POP PSW instructions. When, the IE flag is set to the interrupt disabled (DI) state, and all maskable interrupts are disabled. When 1, the IE flag is set to the interrupt enabled (EI) state and interrupt request acknowledgment is controlled with an in-service priority flag (ISP), an interrupt mask flag for various interrupt sources, and a priority specification flag. The IE flag is reset () upon DI instruction execution or interrupt acknowledgment and is set (1) upon EI instruction execution. (b) Zero flag (Z) When the operation result is zero, this flag is set (1). It is reset () in all other cases. 34 User s Manual U1789EJ2VUD

35 CHAPTER 3 CPU ARCHITECTURE (c) Register bank select flags (RBS and RBS1) These are 2-bit flags to select one of the four register banks. In these flags, the 2-bit information that indicates the register bank selected by SEL RBn instruction execution is stored. (d) Auxiliary carry flag (AC) If the operation result has a carry from bit 3 or a borrow at bit 3, this flag is set (1). It is reset () in all other cases. (e) In-service priority flag (ISP) This flag manages the priority of acknowledgeable maskable vectored interrupts. When this flag is, lowlevel vectored interrupt requests specified by a priority specification flag register (PRL, PRH, PR1L, PR1H) (see 19.3 (3) Priority specification flag registers (PRL, PRH, PR1L, PR1H)) cannot be acknowledged. Actual interrupt request acknowledgment is controlled by the interrupt enable flag (IE). (f) Carry flag (CY) This flag stores overflow and underflow upon add/subtract instruction execution. It stores the shift-out value upon rotate instruction execution and functions as a bit accumulator during bit operation instruction execution. (3) Stack pointer (SP) This is a 16-bit register to hold the start address of the memory stack area. Only the internal high-speed RAM area can be set as the stack area. Figure 3-7.
