5 1. OVERVIEW 1.1 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this document is to help user to get the VK8300-imx6 Development Platform up and running in short period of time. This guide covers the overview of the connectors and switches in the development platform, instructions on how to connect the development platform to a PC and booting the development platform with supplied boot devices. The VK8300 development platform is a combination of the following: VS8300 series SOM module VC8300 carrier board 10.1 (1024 x 600 pixels) Display with touch panel Front and back plastic plate Camera module on the front plastic plate In addition, please refer to VC8300 Carrier Board Reference Manual for the hardware specification of the VK8300-IMX6 Development Platform. 1.2 PACKAGE CONTENTS 1. VK8300-IMX6 Development Platform with Android OS pre-installed. Below is a table that provides the SOM module that is installed on a development platform. Dev. 9 2. SETTING UP: BASICS 2.1 DISPLAY TYPE SETTING The VK8300-IMX6 Development System comes with a 10.1 LCD display with touch panel. The resolution of the LCD display is 1024 (W) x 600 (H). Please ensure that the settings of switches SW8 and SW9 are according to the diagram below. Please note that the display cable must be connected to LVDS#0. USB Touch 10.1 Display LVDS #0 LVDS #1 Display Type Sel SW8 SW9 Figure 2-1: Default setting of SW8 and SW9 for 10.1 LCD Display 2.2 BOOT SOURCE SELECTION SETTING VS8300-IMX6 development platforms can boot from one of the following sources. 1. On-board flash: emmc or NAND Flash as loaded in the SOM. More commonly, VEST SOMs are loaded with emmc. Please refer to section for booting from emmc and section for booting from NAND flash. 2. Removable SD Card: Please refer to section for booting from SD card. 3. Downloading firmware binaries and images using USB OTG port of the development platform: Please refer to section for the serial download mode. The boot source is selected using switches SW5 and SW7 in the carrier board of the development platform. Please set the switch appropriately and press the reset button (see Figure 1-3 to identify reset ( Rst ) button) or power-cycle the development platform to perform the action. If the VS8300 SOM has an emmc flash in it, then the switches SW7 and SW5 must be placed in the position as show in the diagram below and the development platform must be power-cycled or the reset button must be pressed firmly (see Figure 1-3 to identify reset ( Rst ) button) to make the development platform boot directly from the on-board emmc flash. SW7 SW5 Figure 2-3: emmc Boot Source Setting Boot from NAND flash If the VS8300 SOM has a NAND flash instead of an emmc flash, then the switches SW7 and SW5 must be placed in the position as show in the diagram below and the development platform must be power-cycled or the reset button must be pressed firmly (see Figure 1-3 to identify reset ( Rst ) button) to make the development platform boot directly from the on-board NAND flash. 11 SW7 SW5 Figure 2-4: NAND Flash Boot Source Setting Boot from SD card To make the development platform boot directly from the SD card, switches SW7 and SW5 must be placed in the position as show in the diagram below and the development platform must be power-cycled or the reset button must be pressed firmly (see Figure 1-3 to identify reset ( Rst ) button). SW7 SW5 Figure 2-5: SD Card Boot Source Setting Serial Download Mode (Through USB OTG Port) To place the development platform in the serial download board, switches SW7 and SW5 must be placed in the position as show in the diagram below and the development platform must be power-cycled or the reset button must be pressed firmly (see Figure 1-3 to identify reset ( Rst ) button). 12 After the development platform is placed in this mode and the micro USB cable connected for serial download mode as noted in Section 2.3, developers can make use of tools like the Manufacturing Tool (also called mfgtool) to program the on-board flash or an SD card that has been inserted into the SDIO card slot of this development platform. VEST provides different mfgtool packages for different kinds of firmware binaries like Android images and Yocto based Embedded Linux images. Please ask your VEST representative for more information on the mfgtool package specifying the operating environment (i.e., Android or Embedded Linux) required. 2.3 CABLE CONNECTIONS This section describes the common cable connections that are typically done when working with the development platform. Connect micro USB Cable for Serial Download Mode Connect a micro USB Cable into USB OTG port (refer to Figure 1-3). Connect the other end of the USB Cable to a PC acting as a host terminal. Connect micro USB Cable for Serial Debugging Connect a micro USB Cable into debug port (refer to Figure 1-3). Connect the other end of the USB Cable to a PC acting as a host terminal. Connect User Interface Devices (Optional) To interact with the Android operating system displayed on the monitor it may be desirable to attach a keyboard and/or a mouse. Connect the keyboard and/or mouse to USB Host1 port (refer to Figure 1-3). Connect Ethernet Cable (Optional) Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet jack (refer to Figure 1-2). Connect Power Supply Connect the 12VDC output of the power adaptor to the DC power jack (refer to Figure 1-4). Connect the power adaptor to an external 110VAC ~ 240VAC power source. When power is connected to the smart device, it will automatically begin the boot sequence. 2.4 HYPER TERMINAL SETTINGS FOR SERIAL DEBUGGING In order to send commands and receive debug messages from the development system, a terminal application like Hyper Terminal is required. Tera Term is another open-source, free, software implemented, terminal emulator (communications) program that serves similar purpose. The following settings are used to establish the link between the PC and the VK8300-IMX6 development platform: Baud Rate: Data: 8 bit Stop bit: 1 Parity: None Flow Control: None 2.5 BOOT PROCESS FOR ANDROID IMAGE By default, the SOM in a development platforms come pre-installed with Android operating system. 13 1. During the boot process, there will be operating system boot status information scrolling on the PC s terminal window. Early in the boot process, U-boot would display the variant of the i.mx 6 SoC that is loaded in the SOM module. In this illustration below, the SOM is mounted with i.mx 6 Quad Plus SoC and has 4GB of DRAM. Figure 2-7: Android boot info on terminal window 2. When the boot process is complete, the Android unlock screen will be displayed on the development platform LCD display. Figure 2-8: Android unlock screen 3. 16 4. LEGAL NOTICES The signed agreement between Purchaser and APC will govern the sale and purchase of APC s Venture Embedded Solutions Technology ( VEST ) products ( Products ). In the event that no agreement has been concluded, APC s terms and conditions of supply will apply. Testing and other quality control techniques are used to the extent that APC deems necessary to support its warranty. Except where required by law, specific testing of all parameters of each Product is not necessarily performed. Purchaser must provide adequate design and operating safeguards to minimize inherent or procedural and technical risks associated with Purchaser products and applications. Purchaser is solely responsible for its selection and use of APC Products. APC assumes no liability for applications assistance, Purchaser product design or any incompatibility of the Product with Purchaser product. Products supplied by APC are not designed, intended or authorized for use in life support, life sustaining, medical systems or devices, aircraft navigation, nuclear, or other applications, including, but not limited to, public transportation operating systems, in which the failure of such Products could reasonably be expected to result in personal injury, loss of life or severe property or environmental damage. Purchaser acknowledges that use of APC s Products in such product applications is understood to be fully at the risk of Purchaser and that Purchaser is responsible for verification and validation of the suitability of APC s Products in such applications. Purchaser agrees that APC is not and shall not be liable, in whole or in part, for any claim or damage arising from use in such applications. Purchaser agrees to indemnify, defend and hold APC harmless from and against any and all claims, damages, losses, costs, expenses and liabilities arising out of or in connection with any such use or application. APC retains all rights to all proprietary intellectual property in the Products and associated manufacturing processes and has the right to file for and obtain intellectual property protection for same.
