4 Year : The Application Development System (ADS) Base Board CPU Board PMIC Board 4
5 Year : The Product Development Kit (PDK) System The concept started to address: 1. Board level issues 2. Cost 3. Vehicle for quick custom prototyping The CPU board includes most common and Complex components of the system like - DDR/mDDR, PMIC NAND etc. Customers can use the default CPU board or create their own personality board quickly. The Debug board includes all common system Debug components like JTAG, UART and Ethernet. Compared to the ADS system, the cost came down to almost ½, but was still seen as a costly system for development. Personality board Debug board CPU board 5
6 Year : The Evaluation Kit (EVK) System This platform started as a development platform targeting low cost. It gained popularity as the low cost general i.mx51 development platform. Multiple options of feature expansions are available on this system and supported by two internally created expansion boards. This board is not a replacement of a silicon validation platform. Users can speed up their design phase by using the most common features available on this system or by creating suitable expansion boards. 6

9 Why are we considering Accelerated Prototyping support? For the majority of our customers, designing a system from scratch is time consuming and prone to design issues. In the past, we have seen many customers struggling with design issues related to PMIC, DDR, USB, etc., where many crucial man months are lost in system debug having adverse impact on product launch schedule. Many small customers lack necessary expertise and resources to start the design from scratch, even when they have a great idea. Supporting the full spectrum of customers with a platform to enable accelerated prototyping is the core theme behind our Accelerated Prototyping support. The i.mx53x-based Low Cost Module (currently under development) is the pilot platform engine to introduce and enable accelerated prototyping. By enabling accelerated prototyping, we are aiming for the true pervasiveness of the i.mx products in different areas of the embedded product market. 9
10 Our Approach to Accelerate Product Prototyping using the LCM Our key approach to accelerate our customers prototyping lies in converging all system complexities in one low cost module. For customers, who might have the need to go beyond the general hardware configuration, we are making all signals from the i.mx processor accessible to the developer. We have developed a special mechanism for connector-less board-to-board connection (currently in the patent and thorough testing process) to avoid costly connectors and enable the use of the low cost modules across different base boards. Our LCM board-geometry allows for automatic pick-and-place on the base board. Customers can treat the LCM as a highly-integrated module for their final product design as well. 10

24 Summary The i.mx Low Cost Module (LCM) is currently in development The LCM is based on i.mx53x and could be used for fast prototyping The modular approach allows the CPU core module to be used in final products (we have yet to see different test results in terms of reliability).
