3 What is the motivation for C-ITS? One central unit for C-ITS Central ITS Station or C-ITS-S Contains all functionality to operate C-ITS services Data exchange from / to TCC Multiple roadside units for C-ITS Roadside ITS Station or R-ITS-S All connected to the central unit Sending out harmonized C-ITS services over WLAN What is Hybrid? Hybrid = WLAN and cellular working together Same content over short-range and long-range communication Same content means: same messages, same unique identifier for every message AT approach: the same DATEX II source data feed (and rules) for each communication channel WLAN will not be replaced but complemented by cellular communication 3

Day Deployment (I) Use Case Roadworks Warning Information about several types of short-term and moving roadworks Several scenarios supported, using roadworks trailer and roadside stations Several modes (stand-alone, stand-alone with augmentation, from TCC) I2V use case Use Case In-Vehicle Signage Transmission of electronic signage directly into the vehicle Variable message signs and free-text signs I2V use case Use Case Hazardous Locations / Events Notification about hazardous locations and events I2V and V2I use case I2V uses the road operators event management system V2I sends vehicle events back to the event management system 5

Day Deployment (II) Use Case Probe Vehicle Data Status and awareness data from vehicles V2I use case Aggregation for usage in traffic management (like traffic sensors) Also enables calculation of travel times (after adequate privacy management) Use Case Intersection Safety Transmit signal state, timing and road topology at intersections I2V use case Enables multiple use cases (GLOSA, Time to Green/Red, ) Use Case Protected Zones Protects DSRC based tolling applications I2V use case DSRC tolling (5.8Ghz) and WLAN based C-ITS (5.9Ghz) can interfere with each other Co-Existence standard available, C-ITS needs to lower transmission levels and duty cycles Messages informing C-ITS vehicles about location and radius of DSRC tolling stations 6

7 Why should C-ITS be rolled out now? European policy is requesting the introduction of C-ITS European Commission is preparing a Delegated Act in order to assure an Interoperable introduction among all stakeholders European Commission is supporting the initial introduction via funding programmes Harmonisation of European Corridor initiatives by National Road Administrations / Road Operators within C-ROADS Platform The vehicle manufacturers have announced the introduction Volkswagen Group will deploy C-ITS based on ITS-G5 in Europa starting in 2019 C-ITS for all brands Similar communication by other OEMS (e.g. Toyota in USA and Japan) USA plan to introduce an obligatory mandate for new vehicles equipped with C-ITS based on WAVE 7

8 What is the status of C-ITS in Europe? C-ITS is ready for deployment Many names: C-ITS = Cooperative ITS = Cooperative Systems = C2X One Aim: a direct communication channel between vehicles and road infrastructure State of Play Called IEEE p, ITS-G5 (Europe), WAVE (US), pwlan, Automotive WLAN, Free, stable and tested, frequency (5.9 GHz) is dedicated for ITS usage Hybrid communication (WLAN and cellular) is possible and planned for the future Cellular has not yet proven co-existence with tolling applications First generation of WLAN based C-ITS services is available Harmonised specifications available e.g. C-ROADS Successfully implemented e.g. Living Lab Test Site around Vienna Successfully tested e.g. several tests with car industry and OEMs Harmonized throughout Europe in C-ROADS

9 The ECo-AT project Is a national initiative in Austria with the aim to develop and test specifications for the provision of cooperative services (I2V) via ITS-G5 on 5,9 GHz ECo-AT specifications are defined in English, have been tested among stakeholders and are available free of charge via Already requested by more than 500 recipients worldwide ECo-AT is running a testbed in Vienna in real traffic environment ECo-AT has successfully verified the implementations with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers like: Hyundai, Opel, Honda, Volkswagen, Renault, Volvo Trucks, Fiat CRF, Aricent, DENSO, Commsignia, Cohda Wireless, Hyundai, Mobis, Nordsys Kapsch, Siemens, Swarco Reliability all the way 9

10 Corridor initiative as joint effort of The Netherlands, Germany & Austria Similar projects in the Netherlands, Germany & Austria Joint initiative for the introduction of initial cooperative ITS services Common functional descriptions of the initial cooperative ITS services and technical specifications Start of the actual implementation of the initial cooperative ITS services Based on ECo-AT 10
