2 365nm s offer a cheap and non toxic unique solution to the problem of water sterilisation. Research in this area has been undertaken at a number of prestigious universities across the world. We have gathered the peer reviewed material in order to kickstart the search for a portable solution that can be partly powered by solar energy. Here at the Frantz Fanon Research Unit we aim to develop, test and research these cutting edge s and share the results with the University of Sierra Leone. The aim is to produce an open source solution that can be shared across the developing world, providing a non chemical solution to water purification. 2

3 China is a global leader in the manufacture of and UVC-LED technology. s are cheap and we have sourced them at $2 per LED. As the technology becomes more widespread this cost will drop. This technology is currently being deployed and it is the hope of this research unit, to introduce the science, development and production of water purification mobile products that can be easily used by the poor and those without access to clean drinking water. 3

4 Low Cost hobbyist micro controllers are the latest innovation on the market. Micro Controllers offer cheap use of USB, SD CARD, Wi-FI, HDMI, Bluetooth technologies that can be connected to and controlled, with computer code and software. By connecting the to a microcontroller we can test and monitor the water purification process in realtime and collect the data. By writing the code for testing water purity, bacteria detection, temperature and other sensor data, we can produce data that can be submitted for peer review. A number of different computer languages can be deployed. We will focus mainly on C# scripting language, C and C++. 4

5 3D Rapid Prototyping has many open source solutions that include online schematics for building our own 3D printers in order to produce the light weight housing and water container to hold the water for analysis and sterilisation. This will enable the research unit to share the exact plans and specifications across international boundaries. STL files are easy to use, and coupled with the 3D CAD open source software Blender, we can share and develop a working protoype in hours. 5

6 UNITY 5 is a 3D and 2D free to download game engine. It uses C# Scripting as the language to control and develop games for Android and Apple ios. By developing and producing games based on online tutorials, researchers, students and hobbyists can gain a working understanding of the C# language that is useful for developing software for micro-controllers. UNITY 5 can also be used as a training and teaching tool to demonstrate the use and deployment of the water purification unit as well as introducing the idea and marketing the product to educate those in remote areas with limited internet but access to smart phones. 6

The mobile portable water sterlisation unit can be made from 3D printed parts based on the CAD files in the 3D print ready.stl format. 7
