2 The technology is here to stay, either embrace it or fight it Our office has purchased them for staff Cost is reasonable All platforms have many apps to help do your job (Apple, Windows, Android)

3 Traveling-No need to open and declare at TSA when flying - Check, Send, Reply on the road Texting- When synced with your phone it allows you to get texts at both locations, and can compose and reply to them Take pictures or video for Association Website (pictures of officials, signage for sponsors, media photos) Instant Access to Handbooks, Rulebooks

4 Post Scores of Tournaments using in-house program Monitor results of tournaments around the state Assign Officials-using Arbitor Pay Officials- using Arbitor Communicate with other staff members during state championships

5 Update Association Website (Platform Specific) Monitor weather conditions-instant weather radar and warnings Maps programs fantastic for finding site locations and directions to venues Sunup and Sundown times Can do PowerPoint Presentations from tablet (some require downloads like SlideShark) Calendars, notes, reminders all synced with phone is very handy

10 TRANSITION 1 (EARLY TO MID 2000S) Many states moved to online meetings for many reasons Less equipment maintenance Consistent Messaging Savings of dollars for members and association Accessibility to far reaching areas (Ashland-Fulton) Less wear and tear on staff bodies Issues What to do with old (repurpose or give away or sell)

11 TRANSITION 2 Portable Device Explosion Every manufacturer wanted to make a tablet Explosion of smart phones Everyone wants to be connected (at least for now) Iphone/Ipad Others such as Google, and now Microsoft now in the hardware game strong.

12 PROBLEMS WITH TRANSITION 2 TO THINK ABOUT Blind Loyalty All hail to Steve Jobs or It has to be Android Developers cannot keep up with preferences Strategies for State Offices Buy all same Allow users to purchase and reimburse (or not) (BYOD model)

13 QUESTIONS DURING THIS PHASE Do you have internal support or will it be peer support? Do you want standardization, control of apps, etc. Are your users equal in ability? Are you purchasing for office inventory or asking users to purchase? If purchased, be able to find and erase Accessories -required and optional, can user add, who maintains, etc. Strategy for return of created/edited files to primary servers (whether local or cloud)

15 OPTIONS FOR DECISIONS Three examples-ultrabook, Ipad, Surface Can be as expensive as you want, 950 to more than 2 Ultrabook- Lighter Laptop replacement, souped up netbook Generally No DVD, No VGA (watch for needed accessories) Lighter than laptop, heavier than ipad Full laptop capabilities Software on it is what you put on it (suggest blow out and start over with new)

16 OPTIONS FOR DECISIONS ipad (anywhere from 500 to 1000 depend on memory, etc) Lightest weight of options, goes everywhere Proprietary apps (don t forget that web apps should work though) ALWAYS buy the 3G/LTE model just in case you ever want data plan About 8 hour average battery life Small footprint (can be considered fragile), Insist on protective case if bought by office All ports are optional and must go through Apple interface

17 OPTIONS FOR DECISIONS ipad (continued) CANNOT DO MS OFFICE (Although MS365 will give options) CANNOT PLAY FLASH (keep in mind for clinics, etc.) Do not HAVE to use Safari, others available, even some that play FLASH New development will likely not focus on FLASH, however legacy content will be around for a while.. Lots of Apple accessories to do various things, can add up on cost side..

18 OPTIONS FOR DECISIONS Microsoft Surface Full functioning laptop Can be tablet or laptop (w/removable keyboard) Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) built in Based in windows 8 but could be blown out and use others (would likely lose touchscreen) Touchscreen for some apps (but is that necessary) Battery life, 3 to 4 hours. Somewhat awkward charger Does have USB port and other ports for accessories Full Size keyboard, MicroSD, and HD Video

19 ONE STATE S ANSWER Some type of device is absolutely necessary to keep in contact We purchased ipads across the Board We purchased ultrabook types for three power users (don t have to be exact same for all) We have experimented with Surface, good, bad and ugly. One user, uses Surface and Ipad in concert

20 ONE STATE S ANSWER After 1 year, was right decision Vast majority of usage by staff is to stay connected on road, caught up on s, use primarily for and web browsing Repurposed some old laptops for use in Board meetings and at events. Upgrade to SSD and maintain, they will last for years. Allow staff to keep old laptops for use at events (will be changing, and will allow checkout for events to keep maintained)

21 CONCLUSIONS AND TAKE AWAYS Absolutely necessary to keep in contact There is no ONE answer Your end usage should drive your answer ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL, and ONE DEVICE MAY NOT DO ALL THINGS Watch Possible tax consequences of allowing the employees to use provided equipment as home computer! Particularly EDs, Board members, etc, if Office is essential, consider a Surface for travel. This will all change tomorrow. Don t sweat it
