15 Selecting the Best Delivery Platform What type of content is it? When and how often does it need to be delivered? What is the length of the content? Do results need to be tracked? 16 Content Developing Content Type of content will dictate the delivery platform If it is primarily text based (i.e. product specifications) then the device will work If it consist of large graphical diagrams or advanced screen interactivity, then mobile (small screens) devices would not be a good choice 29 Developing Content Delivery Timing If the content only needs to be delivered once a year then desktop or laptop systems can be used for delivery If the content changes frequently, then mobile devices should be looked at for delivery of just in time content 30 Page 15

17 Developing Content Content Amount Long format content (courses over 30 min long) do not work well on small screens Shorter form (5 20 min) content can be targeted for mobile devices, keeping in mind if the type of content is good for just in time delivery 31 Content Tracked? Developing Content If the content needs to be tracked then mobile delivery may have some technical hurdles depending on each organization s Intranet and or LMS configuration Also there are security issues (i.e. lost smartphone with sensitive data on it) to be aware of when delivering to mobile devices 32 Page 16

18 Selecting the Best Delivery Platform Devices Owned This mainly applies to mobile devices. Most organizations already supply the desktop or even laptop PCs. If the target audience already has a device, then they can be leveraged for delivering content. 33 Developing for the Delivery Platform Desktop / Laptop / Netbook/ Tablet With the larger screen, you can use engaging media such as 3D simulations /animation and video segments Sometimes there are bandwidth issues to consider, but these days broadband is everywhere and this issue is going away quickly Some of the newer netbooks may have limited processing power for some types of media (advanced gaming / graphics segments) 34 Page 17

19 Developing for the Delivery Platform Mobile Devices, Smartphones With the smaller screen, content will need to fit without having too small an image or text size and still be readable There are various Smartphone platforms (Apple, Windows Mobile, Android, Java, etc.) so content will need to be targeted to the specific platform in order to play properly 35 Repurposing If you have done the homework to ensure that your content is accurate, timely and relative, you can easily apply it to various themes or topics. (The key will be use the content management system s capabilities to the fullest to catalogue and organize your content.) Upfront analysis is always key to successful learning programs. It simply draws a spotlight on the validity of content when you repurpose sections. The sections have to stand on their own. They have to be accurate (when taken out of the original context, errors or weak elements can be easily seen). 36 Page 18
