1 SNAP & READ INSTALLATION AND USE GUIDE Special Education and Technology has recently purchased a Google Chrome extension called Snap&Read. It is an add-on to the Google Chrome browser that will read: grade level worksheets, websites, PDF s, google docs, etc. It will translate, level the text down for struggling readers, and give the student opportunities to pull information into a diagram, take notes and create citations. This is available for EVERY student in our district at school and at home. There are two ways to add the Google extension. If you are already familiar with the Google browser you simply go to the Google store and search for Snap&Read with no spaces. You will be able to add it here. If you are unfamiliar with Google chrome extensions, please follow the steps below to add the extension on your teacher PC computer. You can set the default browser to Chrome if you would like as Chrome works well with most other sites. 1. Open a Google Chrome browser in your all apps library in the start menu. 2. Staff and secondary students go to Deer Park ISD home webpage at and sign into Office 365. (If you are assisting an elementary student with login, they will log into snap and read after the extension has been added to student computers by the CTIS using a generic login. See bottom of document) 3. Open a new tab in Chrome by clicking on the blank tab. Go to to login. 4. Enter your office 365/school address in the cell labeled: or username Example:

2 5. Choose your office 365 account as shown below. Be patient as the Office 365 directs you to Deer Park ISD where you will type in your password or that of the student and click sign in. 6. This will open up the snap and read login page for Deer Park ISD s account where you will login to install, manage students and view individual reports for student s reading. 7. For your first use, click on install (shown one of two ways below) and then Chrome extension

3 8. If prompted with message below, you may choose to Skip the tutorial at this time. 9. Click the blue button, + Add to Chrome if present or go to Add Extension 10. At the top right hand corner of the Chrome browser, you will now see a gray target. This is the snap & read icon. 11. To change the text color, highlighting color, rate of speech, pitch, volume, text complexity and translation language, simply right click on the target and choose the options you or your student prefer.

4 12. To try the extension out, open a new tab and type in a subject you would like to explore. Click on the Snap & Read target and the tool bar will open up vertically on your page (as shown above). From here, you can explore each feature. A demo is shown below. 13. To test out the read text feature, click on the audio tool and then click on where you want the audio to start. As it reads, the word(s) are automatically highlighted for a child to follow. 14. For text in the boxes or text in pictures, you would use the second tool selection tool to select what you want read. It will place a box around the text and automatically read it aloud.

5 15. If you are logging in with an elementary student for the first time, the CTIS or building technicians will have already loaded the Snap & Read extension to the computers. You will need to instruct the student to right click on the Snap & Read icon and ensure no other student is currently logged in. Right click on the target and choose options and logout. 16. Once logged out the target should have a red dot on it as shown. 17. Click on the target and enter the student s login information as shown. Their login is the initial of their last name, initial of their first name, student id and For example: Bob Smith with student id of #12345 would be sb12345@dpisd.org. Their password is their 6-digit date of birth. They will enter it when office 365 requests their password. 18. Continue with the process as described in Step#5. You will not need to install the product again. *Your CTIS will conduct a full training on this soon, but thought you would like to check it out now! *
