For more information, please contact Sales at or This quick start guide provides: instructions for installing Preview Kit for Pro 2.1 on a Red Hat host for the first time instructions for booting Preview Kit for Pro 2.1 in a cross-hosted development environment instructions for running the Preview Kit for Pro 2.1 demo page usage notes, including the file and path names used for your target board For this guide, the host system is assumed to be a Red Hat Linux (version 7.2) host. This quick start guide assumes that the target board uses out-of-the-box default hardware and software configurations as specified by the hardware manufacturer. This guide also assumes that you know how to use Linux. If you are unfamiliar with Linux, there are many books available to help you get started using and understanding Linux. Note: MontaVista Software does not endorse the book listed below. The following example is provided for your convenience only. Running Linux, Matt Welsh, Matthias Kalle Dalheimer, and Lar Kaufman. 7 Chapter 1: Overview Requirements Requirements Before you begin, make sure your host and target machines meet the requirements listed below. Target This manual provides instruction for the following target: MIPS Technologies, Inc. Malta 4KC and 5KC (Big-Endian) Host Your host machine must meet the following requirements: You also need to have: It must be an x86 machine running Red Hat 7.2. If you are using a standard Workstation install (all versions of Red Hat) with X windows and NFS server package groups or Gnome or KDE and Software Development package groups installed, you need to install the following individual package from the Red Hat installation CD-ROMs: dhcp For a basic installation, a single architecture, and a single LSP, it must have a minimum of 300 MB available. It must have a supported Ethernet interface. It must have a serial port. It must have an Internet connection. The firewall on your host must be configured to allow NFS mounting. For Red Hat 7.2, for a default installation, the firewall is configured to prevent NFS mounting (i.e. set to High ). Removing the firewall (i.e. setting the firewall to None ) will allow NFS mounting; however, because of the numerous security issues involved in changing firewall configurations, please contact your systems administrator for information about how to configure your host s firewall at your site. Ensure that the board is configured to run in big-endian mode. For bigendian mode, ensure that switch S5-2 is ON. 2. Power on the target. You are placed at a YAMON prompt. Note: On bootup, the YAMON ROM monitor prints the target s MAC address. Make a note of this address as it will be used in later configurations. 3. Enter the following commands: set ipaddr <targetipaddr> set subnetmask set bootserver <hostipaddr> set bootfile /tftpboot/vmlinux.srec-mips-malta-mips_fp_bepreviewkit (ENTER THE ABOVE COMMAND AS A SINGLE LINE.) In the command above, replace <targetipaddr> with the target machine s IP address and <hostipaddr> with the host machine s IP address. You may now proceed to setting up the host. Configure the Host This target uses a network boot. The kernel is configured to mount its file system root using the Network File System (NFS). To configure a host, perform the following tasks: Configure DHCP. Configure TFTP. Configure NFS. For more information about how to configure the host see Host Configuration on page 17. Note: To configure DHCP, you need the target s MAC address (Ethernet address). On bootup, the YAMON ROM monitor prints the target s MAC address. 21 Chapter 4: Host Configuration Overview These instructions are for the following Linux host: Red Hat 7.2. The following sections provide instructions on how to configure the different components of the host system: Configure DHCP on page 18 Configure TFTP on page 20 Configure NFS on page 21 Before you begin, make sure your host machine meets the requirements listed in Requirements on page 3. MontaVista Linux Preview Kit for Professional Edition
Chapter 4: Host Configuration Configure DHCP Configure DHCP Warning! If the DHCP server is configured incorrectly, it may cause problems for other machines on your network. If you have questions about how to install and configure the DHCP server on your machine, see your systems administrator for assistance. To configure DHCP, as root, complete the following steps: 1. Make sure a DHCP server is installed and that the following file exists: For Red Hat 7.2, the file is: /var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd.leases If the file does not exist, create an empty one using the touch command. On Red Hat 7.2, use the command: touch /var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd.leases 2. Edit the DHCP daemon configuration file. To do so, add the following configuration into your /etc/dhcpd.conf file: allow bootp; subnet a.b.c.d netmask e.f.g.h { default-lease-time ; # two weeks max-lease-time ; # one year option routers i.j.k.l; group { host name.your.domain { hardware ethernet xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx; fixed-address m.n.o.p; filename "vmlinux.srec-mips-malta-mips_fp_be-previewkit"; option root-path "/opt/hardhat/previewkit/mips/fp_be/target"; } } } 3. Make the following changes: Replace a.b.c.d with your subnet address. Replace e.f.g.h with your netmask address. Replace i.j.k.l with your router or gateway address. Replace name.your.domain with your target name (for example test1.mvista.com). This name must be consistent with the host name used for DNS or host file look-up. 18 MontaVista Linux Preview Kit for Professional Edition 2.1
Chapter 4: Host Configuration Configure DHCP Replace xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx with your target Ethernet (MAC) address. Replace m.n.o.p with your target s IP address. Note: There is a size limit to the request. If you add options other than those listed above, your root file system may fail to mount. 4. Restart dhcpd. Use the command: /etc/rc.d/init.d/dhcpd restart The DHCP daemon is required at boot-up to run BOOTP. BOOTP uses DHCP to obtain IP addresses. To run the DHCP daemon on every boot, use the command: DHCP is now set up. /sbin/chkconfig dhcpd on MontaVista Linux Preview Kit for Professional Edition
Chapter 4: Host Configuration Configure TFTP Configure TFTP To configure TFTP, follow the instructions for the host you are using. Red Hat 7.2 To configure TFTP on a Red Hat 7.2 host, complete the following steps: 1. Create (or edit) the file /etc/xinetd.d/tftp. Use the following format: #/etc/xinetd.d/tftp service tftp { socket_type wait user log_on_success log_on_failure server server_args disable } = dgram = yes = root += USERID += USERID = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd = /tftpboot = no 2. Create the directory /tftpboot. Use the command: mkdir /tftpboot 3. Create a symbolic link to the boot file in the directory /tftpboot. Use the commands: cd /tftpboot ln -s /opt/hardhat/previewkit/mips/fp_be/target/boot/ vmlinux.srec-mips-malta-mips_fp_be-previewkit vmlinux.srecmips-malta-mips_fp_be-previewkit (ENTER THE PRECEDING STRING AS A SINGLE LINE.) 4. Use the following command to have xinetd reread its configuration file: /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart TFTP is now set up. You can now proceed with setting up NFS on the next page. 20 MontaVista Linux Preview Kit for Professional Edition 2.1
Chapter 4: Host Configuration Configure NFS Configure NFS To configure NFS, as root, complete the following steps: 1. Add the following line in /etc/exports: /opt/hardhat/previewkit/mips/fp_be/target *(rw,no_root_squash,no_all_squash) (ENTER THE PRECEDING STRING AS A SINGLE LINE.) 2. Restart the NFS daemon. Use the command: /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs restart Note: If restart fails, you may need to stop and then start NFS. 3. Set the NFS daemon to run on every boot. Use the command: /sbin/chkconfig nfs on 4.
