3 Overview About this Guide This guide provides detailed instructions on how to use the Unit Builder tool in Strong Bonds. This includes viewing the Command Tiers, adding new units and editing and disabling existing units. Importance of Maintaining Units in Strong Bonds The Unit Builder functionality in Strong Bonds provides a management interface for units in your Component. It allows you to view and manage the current Command Tiers and add additional units. This ensures that the correct units are available for selection during event creation. This list of units is also used for the Unit Affiliation drop-down in user profiles. Who Should Use this Guide This guide is designed to support national and state staff members with appropriate system permissions to view and maintain units. How this Guide Can Help This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to: View units in the existing command tier Edit and disable existing units Move a unit within the command tier Add a new unit Unit Builder User Guide 3

4 Viewing the Command Tier Staff with the appropriate permissions can view the existing Command Tier for their Component using the Unit Builder tool. To view the existing command tier: 1. Click the Admin Tools tab at the top of the page. The Unit Builder page is displayed. Note: Depending on your user role in Strong Bonds, you may be able to select a Component from the drop-down. 5 3. Click the Unit Name to view the tiers below. The Unit Tiers are displayed. Unit Builder User Guide 5

6 Editing a Unit The Unit Builder page provides a management interface for the units in Strong Bonds. It ensures that all units in the Command Tier are listed correctly, enabling all approved users to select their unit during the event creation process and users to select their Unit Affiliation in their User Profiles. To edit a unit: 1. Click the Menu icon on the far right of the Unit Builder page, then click Edit in the drop-down. 2. In the Edit Unit pop-up that appears, complete the Unit Name, Installation, State and Country fields. Note that mandatory fields are marked with an asterisk. Unit Builder User Guide 6

7 3. Once you have made your updates, click Save. 4. The Unit Builder page displays the unit with the saved changes. Unit Builder User Guide 7

8 Disabling a Unit Approved users with permissions to view units for their Component on the Unit Builder page can disable units. Disabling a unit will remove it from all drop-down selections that it might be listed in, such as when creating an event request or when signing up with Strong Bonds. To disable a unit: 1. Click the Menu icon on the far right of the Unit Builder page, then click Disable in the dropdown. 2. Click Disable in the pop-up that appears. Unit Builder User Guide 8

9 The unit is now disabled and is locked. Notes: A unit can be disabled at any level of the command structure i.e. Parent Unit and Child Units. When a unit is disabled, all Child Units are disabled as well. If a disabled unit had been selected during event creation or for a user sign up, the system will continue to show this unit in these fields. However, if the unit selection is changed then it cannot be edited back to a disabled unit. Enabling a Disabled Unit To enable a unit: 1. Click the Enable link beside the Menu icon. 10 2. Click Enable in the pop-up that appears. The unit is enabled and is no longer locked. Notes: A disabled unit can be enabled at any level of the command structure i.e. Parent Unit and Child Units. Enabling a disabled unit will enable all Child Units as well. Unit Builder User Guide 10

11 Moving a Unit To move a unit: 1. Click the Menu icon on the far right of the Unit Builder page, then click Move in the drop-down. 2. In the Move Unit to pop-up that appears. Select Set to parent level in the drop-down to move the unit to the top level. Unit Builder User Guide 11

12 OR Select the hierarchy of units from the drop-downs to move the unit to the appropriate level. 3. Click Next. 4. In the pop-up that appears, do one of the following: Click Confirm to save these changes. Unit Builder User Guide 12

13 Click Modify Destination to go back and change the Unit Structure. The unit is moved and system displays a success message. Notes: If a Child Unit is moved from a disabled Parent Unit to an enabled Parent Unit, then the Child Unit will gain an enabled status. If a Child Unit is first individually disabled and moved to an enabled Parent Unit, then the Child Unit will retain its disabled status. Unit Builder User Guide 13

14 Adding a Unit DACH can create new Units. To add a new unit: 1. Click the Admin Tools tab at the top of the page. The Unit Builder page appears. 2. Depending on your user role in Strong Bonds, you may be able to select a Component from the drop-down. Click the Add Unit button once you have selected a Component. 3. Enter the new unit s name in the Unit Name field in the pop-up that appears. Unit Builder User Guide 14

15 4. In the Add Unit pop-up that appears, complete the Unit Name, Installation, State and Country fields. Note that mandatory fields are marked with an asterisk. 5. Click Add to add the new unit. The new unit appears in the list on the Unit Builder page. Note: Unit names must be unique and cannot exceed 50 characters. Unit Builder User Guide 15

16 Adding a Child Unit To add a Child Unit: 1. Click the Menu icon for the unit you would like to add a Child Unit for, then click Add Child Unit in the drop-down. 2. Enter the new Child Unit s name in the Unit Name field in the pop-up that appears. Unit Builder User Guide 16

17 3. In the Add Unit pop-up that appears, complete the Unit Name, Installation, State and Country fields. Note that mandatory fields are marked with an asterisk. 4. Click Add to add the new Child Unit. The new Child Unit appears in the list on the Unit Builder page. Notes: A maximum of five Child Units can be added under the main level unit. Once the Unit Tier has reached five units, no more Child Units can be added. If a Child Unit is added to a Unit Tier that has been disabled, the new Child Unit will be disabled as well.
