1 Internet Blogging WordPress is an online publishing platform. It helps in creating professional internet websites, and it could be used to create a free personal blog. You will use WordPress as a primary platform to post all your assignments during the next two weeks. So, this assignment is designed to make WordPress familiar to you. If you have an active WordPress account, you can create a new page and use it for this assignment and the upcoming activities. Creating a new page will be discussed in track II of this document. Track I: create an account and start your blog (5 tasks) 1) To start your blog, visit this link: 2) Then, select Start with a blog as illustrated below: 3) Choose a theme. Later, you can change or adjust its design 4) Write a blog name and wait to see its availability. WordPress will offer you several options. Select the free domain or try another name. Remember, you cannot change this name later 5) Then, choose a plan. It is recommended to select the free option 6) You will be directed to Create your account. Write your and choose a password, and press Create My Account 7) Press continue to start blogging 8) Finally, check your to activate your blog 1
2 Adjust the blog: Task 1 1) When you start your blog, WordPress will give you some instruction 2) Then, First blog post will appear on your home page. To edit this post, you will find the edit button in the left bottom corner of this post 3) First, edit the image. Select the edit tool in left bottom corner of the image: 4) Select Add New to add a photo from your gallery. Most likely, you have captured some photos since you arrived in Beirut. Choose one of them and send it to yourself from your phone via . Then, open your from the computer you use and download it. Finally, you will be able to add it to the blog 5) The photo you just uploaded will appear in your images gallery. Select it, then, press Set Featured Image 6) Click on First blog post to edit the title. Write a title related to your image 7) Delete the post s body and write a short caption to describe the image 8) Finally, from the right top corner, press Update Site title: Task 2 It is important to have a title that reflects your site s content. The site title is different than the blog domain that you have selected before. The site title could be changed anytime later. 2) Then, from the left menu, select Settings 3) Change the site title, and press Save Settings Pages: Mainly, websites consist of two major components: pages and a blog. So, it is essential to know the major difference between them. Web Page Content is static: a web page is usually dedicated to a fixed content Blog Content is dynamic: a new post could be added to appear in the same blog page So, it is important to remove unnecessary pages from your blog or make them reflecting your special character by editing them Delete a page: Task 3 Contact page. Then select Trash to delete it 2
3 If you want to receive messages and comments from other people, you might need to keep this page. In this case, you need to edit its image only: Contact page. Then select Trash to delete it. 4) Edit the image. Select the edit tool in left bottom corner of the image: 5) Add any picture you find appropriate. Make sure that you have the image s copyright Edit a page: Task 4 About page. Then select Edit 4) Edit the image. Delete it and write one paragraph about yourself. 6) From the top right corner, press Update Add a new blog post: Task 5 Now, your blog is ready, and it is the time to post your first blog post 2) From the left menu, and on the right side of the Blog Posts button, press Add button. 3) Write your first post about the following issue: from your point of view, evaluate media literacy education in your country. Write a suitable title. Then, in the body, add, maximum, 150 words discussing this topic. 4) Add a picture: you can download it from the Internet, but remember to save its URL to add it to your post 5) To add a picture, press the plus sign from the post tool bar Next, select Add New to upload the picture from the computer. Then, Select it and press Insert 6) Do not forget to copy and paste the image URL at the end of your post after writing Image source: 7) Finally, press the Publish button from the top right corner Note: In your future assignments, you might need to post a video or audio URL. To post a video or audio URL, copy the URL and paste it in the body of a new blog post. Next, wait a few seconds until the video or the audio appears. Finally, write a description or caption under the video/audio, and do not forget to write an appropriate title. 3
4 Track II: use your existed WordPress blog (3 tasks) If you already have a WordPress blog, you can use it on your future assignments. In this case, you need to be familiar with WordPress pages and sub-pages. Create a page: Task 1 2) From the left menu, and on the right side of the Pages button, press Add button 3) Write the title: MDLAB ) You will use this page to post your upcoming assignments. So, add a short description on the body of the page. For example: this page is dedicated to my MDLAB assignments 5) Press Save from the upper bar 6) Press Schedule to make your page ready 7) The page is ready, but you will not see it on the preview until adjusting the menu 8) From the top left corner, select My Site 9) From the left menu, and on the right side of the Themes button, press Customize 10) Next, select Menus 11) Then, select Primary 12) Press 13) From the newly appeared menu, select the page you have just created: MDLAB ) Finally, on the upper part of the menu, press Save & Publish 15) Now, the page will publicly appear on your WordPress Create a subpage: Task 2 2) From the left menu, and on the right side of the Pages button, press Add button 3) Add a picture: Most likely, you have captured some photos since you arrived in Beirut. 5 9) Press Save from the upper bar 10) Press Schedule to make your page ready 11) The page is ready, but you will not see it on the preview until adjusting the menu 12) From the top left corner, select My Site 13) From the left menu, and on the right side of the Themes button, press Customize 14) Next, select Menus 15) Then, select Primary 16) Press 17) From the newly appeared menu, select the subpage you have just created 18) Next, on the left of Add Items press Reorder 19) Use the active upward or downward pointing arrows to locate the subpage under the parentpage: MDLAB ) Use the right pointing arrow one time to make the selected page a subpage under the parentpage: MDLAB ) Press Done 22) Finally, on the upper part of the menu, press Save & Publish 23) Now, the page will publicly appear on your WordPress as a subpage under: MDLAB 2017 Note: To post your upcoming activities, repeat the aforementioned process for each assignment In your future assignments, you might need to post a video or audio URL. To post a video or audio URL, copy the URL and paste it in the body of a new page. Next, wait a few seconds until the video or the audio appears. Finally, write a description or caption under the video/audio, and do not forget to write an appropriate page title. Activity: Task 3 Now, you are ready to post all your upcoming assignments. So, let s start with a simple activity.
