1 CAREER MODULE MANAGEMENT EFFECTIVE BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS Spring 2018 Director Career Services: Stallar Lufrano-Jardine Office: AB stallar@unr.edu Office Hours: M F 9-4pm Phone: (775) By Appointment Only Why do we have to complete the Career Module? At some point in your life, you will have to look for employment. Applying through Internet sites is not an effective way to get hired. You need to know the people that hire! The Career and Corporate Outreach Center gets you in front of professionals so you learn the ins and outs to getting the career you want! Online Sites you will need to Access: Sokanu Assessment: Nevada Careers: Grades/Points The Career Module is worth a total of 150 points which is almost 10% of your grade. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit at Prepare for the Fair and the Career Fair. Late work will not be accepted. Assignment Points Due Dates Networking Event 60 points RSVP by February 9 th, 11:59 pm Business Cards 30 points February 16 th by 11:59 pm Sokanu Assessment 30 points February 20 th collected in class Thank you 30 points Due within 48 hours of networking event and Forwarded to careersunr@gmail.com. TOTAL 150 points 1
2 SOKANU (30 pts) Turn in during class February 20th Sokanu ( is an online tool to help you find your passion and what you are good at. Answer the questions regardless of education, experience, and motivation. Complete the assessment by selecting what you like to do and what works with your style of work. Step 1: Once you log in, you will begin the assessment. It should take you about 40 minutes to complete. Step 2: When done with log in, click on Dashboard and select Take the Career Test. You will begin ranking items on the site. Step 3: Select Careers at the top to display your matches. You must complete 100% in each of the 5 categories. Use the snipping tool or print screen feature to take an image of your top career matches. Your image will look like the one below and must show your name and date. Print this image and turn it in to your professor. 2
3 BUSINESS CARDS (30 points) Due February 16 th at 11:59 pm *If you submit your business cards late, they will not be printed and you will receive 0 points* Business cards are a great way to connect with new people you meet. You can walk away with a mentor, a possible job offer, or a new friend, and it s much easier to remember a contact with professional cards. The Student Outreach Center will bring your business cards to the networking event so you can give them to employers. This is why it is important to submit them on time. A business card is used in a business transaction to provide contact information. It is a first impression tool. In general, a business card would include: First and Last Name Phone number (only if you want to share) Professional Unique LinkedIn web address Your major Key word descriptors, interesting things about you (keep this short!) Logo or clip art taking caution that you are not using an organization or company logo that is not yours, i.e. it is not appropriate for you to use the university s logo. AVOID using Playfair Display font it does not print well Let s make those cards! Step 1: Go to Step 2: Click the green button, Start Designing Step 3: Create an account. Step 4: Once your account is created enter 5871 in the Quick Search bar. Once the search pops up you can select horizontal or vertical cards. Once selected, click the green Choose Design at the bottom of the screen. Step 5: Work through the steps to design your cards. They should have a professional template/font that will showcase yourself to employers. Step 6: When you have completed your design select the green Preview & Print button. We DO NOT print the back of your cards. So select No. Step 7: The select the green Print It Yourself button. Select Print Options as Print Front of Sheet. And hit the Print Now green button. Step 8: Follow the remaining instructions to save your PDF on your computer or flash drive. 3
4 Step 9: Save the document as: Last Name, First Name. You risk losing points at Stallar s discretion if not labeled properly or ed properly. NOTE: You can change or delete sections where you deem appropriate. Do not to change the margins of the template as cards will not print correctly. We do not check individual cards to make sure they are within the margins. Step 10: You must send your business cards to the following careersunr@gmail.com Do not your cards to Stallar. The subject line should contain: Last Name, First Name, Business Cards, Subject, Class Section Ex. Lufrano, Stallar, Business Cards, MGT 321, 3001 Be sure to keep the in your sent box to verify the time of submission if needed. This will also save the template in your Sent folder if you need a copy in the future. CAUTIONS: DO NOT CHANGE THE MARGINS OF THE TEMPLATE The business cards will be printed on a color printer, so feel free to use color. Business cards will only be printed on one side. Items placed too close to the edges of the business card may not print exactly as placed such as colored lines or borders. 4
5 NETWORKING EVENT (60 points) RSVP by February 9 th, 11:59 pm for ONE of the three events Or Attend a professional Networking Event with approval. During the Networking Event, students will put their communication knowledge and skills to the test in a practice networking session with alumni and business professionals. Students will have the opportunity to meet various business professionals and alumni who may be able to help students towards their career goals. Space is limited! So RSVP quickly if you do not have flexibility. You will lose 5 points for registering any time after the due date. Students are required to dress in business professional attire. If you need help with this please contact Stallar or your professor. Points will be deducted for inappropriate dress. If you arrive late or leave early, points will be deducted based on 15 minute increments. You will lose 5 points for each 15 minutes you are either late or leave early. If you RSVP & do not show, you will lose all points regardless of attending another event. It is imperative you RSVP for the correct event by the deadline. Step 1: Register for a student account on the Nevada Careers job board: Step 2: Click on Career Events & Workshops at the top of the page. Select the networking event you want to attend. Step 3: Click the RSVP button next to the event. You only need to RSVP and attend ONE event. Here are your three options: BizTalk #1 February 23 4:00 5:30pm Randall Rotunda KC Networking Reception February 28 4:30 6:30pm JCSU 4 th Floor Ballroom C BizTalk #2 April 6 4:00 5:30pm Randall Rotunda KC Professional Association Event See Instructor for more information or Career Director: Stallar THANK YOU (30 points) Must send within 48 hours of event. Due by within 48 hours after the event. After you have completed the networking event, you must write ONE thank you to a professional you met with at the event. Feel free to send an to each person you met as this is proper business etiquette after an event. Your thank you must include: how you met the person, what you spoke about, and thank them for their time. I expect zero errors in this , names written out correctly and the to be natural (not forced). If there are any errors, you will receive zero points. The must be sent from a professional address. After sending the thank you , immediately forward it to careersunr@gmail.com. This provides proof that the thank you was sent within the 48 hour window after the event. 5
6 EXTRA CREDIT PREPARE FOR THE FAIR Career Workshop Wednesday, February 21 st, drop in from 1 pm to 4 pm Earn 20 Extra Credit Points The Prepare for the Fair career workshop is an opportunity to meet various employers while learning valuable life skills such as mastering your first impression, how to dress for the interview, how to build your online presence or clean up the one you already have, and how to work a career fair. Wednesday, February 21 st Drop in hours from 1 pm to 4 pm JCSU 4 th floor ballrooms You will be given worksheets to complete during your time at Prepare for the Fair to ensure you visited each station. IN PERSON MOCK INTERVIEW During PREPARE FOR THE FAIR February 21 st, drop in from 1 pm to 4 pm Earn 20 Extra Credit Points You will receive 20 extra credit points for completing an in-person mock interview during the Prepare for the Fair event at the Joe Crowley Student Union. You must bring your résumé and be professionally dressed to receive credit. You must sign in at the check-in desk to ensure points. CAREER FAIR March 1 st, drop in from 1 pm to 4 pm Earn 20 Extra Credit Points You will receive 20 extra credit points for attending the career fair on March 1 st at the Joe Crowley Student Union, 4 th floor ballrooms.
