Chris Needham C3 Consulting Solutions What are Annotations? Workflow Methodology Limitations Annotations Tags Symbols Dimensions Text Grids Levels *Scope Boxes 1
What are tags? Graphic symbols that reflect the data from the model Speak the truth about the model (c/w text) Contribute to the integrity of a model (WYSIWYG) How are Tags different from Text? Text communicates whatever we tell it to, regardless of the model information Text undermines the integrity of the model, and is ultimately anti-bim Simply put: It is better to tag than it is to text... 2
Tag Creation May contain graphics, text and/or labels Labels Text-based field reflecting a parametric value Can relate to a single object category or multiple object categories Can contain multiple parameter values Tag Creation Basic Method: File New Annotation Symbol Select template Choose category Rotation Rotate with component Position Justification 3
Tag Creation Can accommodate variation by creating different families and/or types of families Both useful Consistency is key Naming conventions critical Avoid excessive use of visibility parameters where label positions are coincident Any custom parameters must exist in both project and family Tag Types Category Specific to single category only Most commonly used 4
Tag Types Multi-category Tags Generally more limited parameters Don t work on some elements e.g. Massing elements Most useful for reflecting parameters that are common to multiple object categories Tag Types Material Tags Impact on naming Must touch host 5
Tag Types Keynote Tags Primary usage Standard drawing notes Specification reference Limitations Restriction of 2 values only Requires a sizeable investment of time to set up an exhaustive reference system Single Keynote Table per project Tag Types Keynote Tags Element Applies/reflects keynote value of element Material Applies/reflects keynote value of material User Allows user to select what keynote value to annotate with Sometimes only keynote available (e.g. batting insulation) 6
Tag Types Area and Room Tags Different configurations Scales/Sizes Hierarchy of Rooms/Areas Which labels to display? TIPS Areas independent of design options Rooms independent of phases Tag All Not Tagged now works for rooms Turn on Room Volume calcs to see volumes displayed in tags Tag Placement Position Defaults as determined by tag family Orientation (TIP: toggle with spacebar) Propagation On Placement Individual Tag All Not Tagged Other 7
Tag Control Settings Loaded Tags Leaders Leader use Leader length Attached End vs. Free End Symbols Scale behaviour Examples... Generic North Arrows Centreline Symbols Drawing Stamps Category specific Grid Heads Level Heads Section Marks Spot Elevation Symbols Title Blocks View References View Titles 8
Dimensions Different Types available Linear Angular Baseline Ordinate Radial Arclength Greater control via Options Bar Dimensions Example types by application Rounded to nearest 5mm Overall Modelling only Standard Structural Openings 9
Dimensions 2009 New Features Overrides Formatting improvements Spot Dimensions Spot Elevations Types by application FFL FCL SFL RL» Existing» Proposed Spot Coordinates 10
Text Management Settings Annotations Text Consistency is key Minimise types for clarity Types by application Markup / Internal Note Opaque vs. Transparent Notes Grids Types by application Primary/Secondary Architectural/Structural Ceiling Interiors (modular fixtures e.g. workstations) Existing/New 11
Grids Best Practice Auto-numbering Placement Center Segment Propagation of extents Protection Pinning Worksets Levels More than just an annotation Types by application Floor Levels (project vs. shared) Ceiling Levels (project vs. shared) Datum Creation/omission plan views Project Browser order Lowest to highest (c/w alphabetic) 12
Scope Boxes Primary purpose To permit greater control over annotation-based elements Grids Levels Crop Regions/Callout Boundaries Reference Planes Scope Boxes Best Practice Management Establish subordinate elements Use a dedicated 3D view to manage them Extents (no object snap) Visibility Naming Conventions Worksets Use dedicated workset(s) 13
Workflow Methodology Warning! Select All Instances Selects throughout entire project No warning provided! Tag All Not Tagged / Loaded Tags Splitting Files Hosted Tags and moving host elements Consistent approach is vital! Limitations Can t have custom arrowheads Can t alter width of tags by instance Can only tag families, but not all categories Currently lose overrides to dimension text when editing witness lines 14
Limitations Can t add parameters to levels Can t add parameters associated with keynotes Can t keynote repeating details or batting insulation (user keynotes only) Don t yet have a Select All Instances in this view option Thank you Questions? Chris Needham 15
