1 Saving Your Microsoft Word Syllabus As a Web Page/.HTM File If you would like to upload your syllabus into Blackboard Vista, converting it from MS Word.doc or.docx file into a web page is a smart choice. This method is best used for a syllabus that is text only. For a syllabus with advanced formatting or images, please refer to Part II of this documentation: Saving Your Microsoft Word 2007 Syllabus Document As an Adobe Acrobat PDF. A web page is viewable by all your students from any computer with internet access. All they will need is an internet browser. Popular internet browsers include Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari. All internet browsers are able to display.htm and.html web pages. The advantage of saving your syllabus into web page format is that students won t need to be at a computer that has Microsoft Office installed on it. Students will not have to download, save or open a Word file. This is especially beneficial for students using computers in public libraries and open labs. Most public access computers do not give users control over what software is installed on the computer and some do not give users permission to download documents off the internet. To get started, follow these easy steps: 1. Create your syllabus using MS Word. Save it in a.doc (Word 2003 and earlier) or.docx (Word 2007) format. 2. With your syllabus open in MS Word, click on the Office Button (big round button on top left). 3. Mouse down to Save As. 4. Select the last option in the pop-up menu to the right that says Other Formats. Part I Saving Syllabus as Web Page.html Middlesex Community College Page 1

2 5. A Save As pop-up window will appear. There are four important things to remember in this window. 6. First, where you are saving your document is important. For this example, we have selected a Desktop folder named PSY 111. You will need to browse to the location of your folder by using the drop-down menu. We recommend that you create a folder either on your desktop or in your My Documents with the name of your class. Saving all your class files in one place will help to keep things organized. It will be easier to find the.htm file when you are ready to upload it into Blackboard Vista. Part I Saving Syllabus as Web Page.html Middlesex Community College Page 2

3 7. Second, name your syllabus following web page naming convention. Name your document in the File Name field. Make sure that you follow web page naming convention. Use of letters, numbers and underscores are acceptable. Do not use special symbols (such as *, #,!, etc), spaces and periods. Underscore may be used to replace spaces. Acceptable: Sample _SyllabusFall2010 Using only letters, numbers and underscore follows web page naming convention. Not acceptable: Syllabus Fall 2010 #2.webpage The use of spaces, special characters (#) and periods in the name disregards web page naming convention. This may result in an error and syllabus page not being viewable to students. 8. Third, from the Save As Type field, scroll down and select Web Page, Filtered (*.htm, *.html). We choose Web Page, Filtered because it will take out Microsoft-specific tags so that the syllabus web page will look good on all web browsers. 9. Fourth, click on the Change Title button in the lower right corner of the pop-up window. 10. A Set Page Title pop-up window will appear. Type in the title you would like to give your web page. This is what will be displayed in the title bar of the browser when your students view the syllabus. 11. Click on the OK button. 4 12. Back in the Save As window, click the Save button. 13. A pop-up will appear warning you that some Word-specific tags may be lost. It will warn you that you are going to remove Office-specific tags. This is exactly what we want. 14. Click on Yes button. 15. Immediately, a new window will appear that will be your syllabus as a new web page. You will know the difference because it will have a.htm file extension at the end of the document name at the top center of your window. This will be different from the original Word file that had a.doc or.docx file extension. (see below) A MS Word file with.doc extension A new web page with an.htm extension: this is what you will upload into Blackboard Vista. 16. Before uploading your syllabus HTML document into Blackboard Vista, make sure to close it. 17. Click on the round Office Button in the top left of your HTML file. 5 18. Select Close from the drop-down menu. 19. OR simply click the X (close window) button at the top right corner of your HTML document window. 20. Now you have a syllabus HTML document ready to be uploaded into Blackboard Vista. Please go to Part III: How to Upload Your Syllabus into Blackboard Vista. 21. If your syllabus HTML document has changed formatting drastically, it is recommended that you save your syllabus Word file as an Adobe Acrobat PDF. Please refer to Part II of this documentation: How to Save Your Microsoft Word 2007 Syllabus document into an Adobe Acrobat PDF.
