Tailor lessons to suit the learning needs of individual students Support a broad range of learning styles Bring the subject matter alive with interaction Help students visualise key concepts with imagery Encourage students to construct meaning through play and experimentation ACTIVstudio makes learning fun! 10 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART ONE ACTIVpen control What is an ACTIVpen? An ACTIVpen is a self powered device that communicates with your PC through an ACTIV board or an ACTIVslate. It s best to think of the ACTIVpen as a mouse - it performs the same left and right-click functions and it enables you to control the cursor in an identical manner. Pen movement Hold the ACTIVpen in close proximity to the ACTIV board, and gently slide the pen nib over the board s surface to move the cursor. When not presenting at the board, you can use the ACTIVpen in conjunction with an ACTIVslate. 1 Barrel button To access context sensitive menu commands, such as copy and paste, usually accessed with a right click of the mouse, hold the ACTIVpen close to the board (within 0.5 cm to 1cm) and press the barrel button. 2 Pen nib Pressing firmly on the board s surface with the tip of the pen has the same effect as left-clicking with the mouse. Pressing firmly on the board s surface and then moving the pen is equivalent to a left click while simultaneously moving the mouse - clicking and dragging. 1 If you normally open applications by double-clicking with the mouse, two rapid taps or pushes on the ACTIV board will have the same effect. You may need to practise to get the right pressure and speed. 2 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 11

AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited PART THREE

PART THREE ACTIVstudio tutorials - introduction About the tutorials Although user guides and reference manuals can be great sources of information, they re rarely the best place to start if you re a newcomer to a piece of software of equipment. Often, the most effective way to become a competent and confident user is to just delve in and start experimenting. For this reason, we suggest that if you re new to ACTIVstudio, the following tutorials might be a good place to start. Each tutorial is designed to give you a flavour of the software s capabilities ideas and the confidence to go on and explore its features in greater depth. Click the Menu button to access the Help files at any time We ll introduce you to some of the core tools and functions available in ACTIVstudio, starting with the basics and moving on to increasingly complex features. However, this is far from a comprehensive one stop guide to ACTIVstudio if you require further information about any particular aspect of the software, please consult the Help files, which you can access through Menu > Help. What is an ACTIVstudio Flipchart? Flipchart is simply the name we give to an ACTIVstudio presentation. Like a traditional paper-based flipchart, an ACTIVstudio Flipchart can contain as many pages as you wish to create. However unlike a traditional Flipchart, your ACTIVstudio Flipcharts can contain much more than just notes and images. You can incorporate a number of different media forms into your Flipcharts including sound files, videos, animations, interactive activities and web-links and the extensive Resource Library is full of digital assets for you to use if you don t have the time to source your own. The only real limit is your own imagination! Assessment To be accredited at Professional User level, please see Part four before progressing to the tutorials section. 26 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL ONE 1 Launching ACTIVstudio for the first time To launch ACTIVstudio, select Start > Programs > ACTIVstudio, or double-click the icon on your desktop (left). As the program starts up, you ll see the Did You Know? tips box. This provides you with handy hints and tips every time you launch the program, so even though you re given the option to stop the box appearing, for now, just click OK to continue. The Main Toolbox will appear on your screen indicating that ACTIVstudio is now running. You ll be able to access all of the core functions, features and program settings through the Main Toolbox. 2 Creating a new Flipchart - Flipchart Mode/Desktop Mode Click on the Flipchart button (left) to create a new full-screen Flipchart. It is possible to hide the Flipchart at any time by clicking on the same button again; we refer to this as Desktop Mode as you can access your computer s desktop and applications even though ACTIVstudio is still running. Clicking on the Flipchart button once more will return ACTIVstudio to Flipchart Mode. NOTE: Another way to access your desktop during an ACTIVstudio session is to click on the Minimise button in the top right hand corner of the ACTIVstudio interface; this hides the Flipchart. To view the Flipchart again, click on the ACTIVstudio tab in the Task bar at the bottom of your screen (below) and select the Flipchart from the pop-up list. 3 Using the Pen Tool Before attempting anything too adventurous, it s worth getting to grips with the basic tools and functions. Most of these can be accessed through the Main Toolbox. Notice that one tool in the Main Toolbox - the Marquee Select Tool (left) - has a faint chequered background and a noticeable square border; this indicates that it is the active tool. The Marquee Select Tool, as its name suggests, is used predominantly for selecting objects. However, as you don t yet have anything on your page to select, activate the Pen Tool (right) instead. To activate a tool, you just click on it. Now you can write the letter a (right) on your Flipchart page. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 27

PART THREE Tutorial one 4 Choosing a pen colour and pen width Notice that one colour in the Main Toolbox is surrounded by a blue border indicating that it is currently the active colour. Change the colour of the Pen Tool to red by clicking on the red Colour Swatch (if red is already active, you can choose another colour instead). The Pen width can also be changed just click on the number 6 in the Main Toolbox (right). Add the letter b to the Flipchart page to see your new settings take effect. 5 Using the Pen Width slider Select another bright colour and drag the Pen Width slider (left) to the right. This is just another way of changing the width of the Pen Tool. When you have increased the Pen Tool s width, you can add the letter c to the Flipchart page. 6 Selecting and manipulating a single object Each letter on the page is an individual object and therefore, each letter can be independently edited. Activate the Marquee Select Tool (left) and click once on the letter a. If you are precise enough, the letter will be surrounded by Pick-up boxes (below) indicating that the selection can be edited. 28 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial one 7 Changing an object s properties using Pick-up boxes The Pick-up boxes enable you to reshape, rotate and reposition an object. Experiment for yourself clicking, dragging, twisting - to see how each of the Pick-up boxes function. With the letter a still selected, choose a different colour from the Colour Palette and also adjust the Pen Width again. All of the changes are applied to your selection instantly. 8 Selecting and editing multiple objects Now select the Marquee Select Tool (left) and click and drag over all three letters. This time Pick-up boxes will surround the entire selection indicating that any new edits will be applied to the whole group. Again, select a different colour and pen width (right). You may also choose to rotate or scale your selection with the Pick-up boxes. 9 Using the Undo Tool Don t worry about making mistakes at this stage as most changes made in ACTIVstudio can be reversed. One click on the Undo button (left) reverses your last action - try this now. Each click reverses a further edit and it s possible to undo every action performed since your last save. As you haven t yet saved your Flipchart, you could click all the way back to a blank Flipchart page. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 29

PART THREE Tutorial one 10 Using the Redo Tool Conversely, the Redo Tool (left) re-applies actions undone with the Undo Tool. Experiment by clicking a number of times on the Undo Tool, followed by a number of clicks on the Redo Tool. 11 Using the Clear Tool There are other ways to delete your content. Click on the Clear Tool and select Clear Page from the pop-up menu (right); this is the quickest and easiest way to clear the screen. The Clear tool can also be used more discriminatively to remove only elements of a particular kind from your page. NOTE: To bring back work that you ve cleared, just use the Undo Tool to reverse the Clear Page action - never forget the power of the Undo Tool! 12 Using the Eraser Tool When you ve cleared the page, re-write the letters abc on the Flipchart page. An alternative method of removing small items from the page is to use the Eraser Tool (left). Select the Eraser Tool and hover the cursor over the page. Like the Pen Tool, the Eraser Tool has a pre-defined thickness that can be adjusted as required with the Pen Width Indicator or slider. Select a thickness of 20. Use the Eraser tool in the same way as you would use the Pen tool and erase one of the letters from the page. If you now increase the Eraser s width to 50 (left) you ll see that you can erase a greater amount from the page at one time. 13 Understanding the Eraser Tool It is important to understand that the Eraser Tool functions quite differently from how you might expect. Although the tool appears to be removing items from the page, it actually works by painting a new object the same colour as the page background - over the top of them. To illustrate this point, click on the area that you just erased. You should be able to drag the white erase object (right), which you just added to the Flipchart page. NOTE: If you don t use one continuous movement when erasing, there may be multiple erase objects on the page. 30 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial one 14 Deleting an object using the Page bin To really erase an object, you should use the delete function. The first way of implementing the delete function is through the Page bin (left). To permanently delete an object, select it and drag it into the Page bin. 15 Deleting an object through the Object Edit Toolbar The Flipchart bin can also be used to delete objects; this can be found in the Object Edit Toolbar (below). To launch this toolbar, select the Marquee Select Tool and double-click on the object that you want to remove - in this case the white erase object. Now click on the Flipchart bin button (right); this deletes the object and will prevent you from accidentally selecting and moving it later on. 16 Editing an object s properties with the Object Edit Toolbar A number of other useful tools are housed in the Object Edit Toolbar. Select one of the letters on the page and then reduce it in size by clicking the Decrease Object Size button (right). Repeatedly click on the button until your letter is noticeably smaller than it was to begin with. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 31

PART THREE Tutorial one 17 Copying, pasting and duplicating objects using the Object Edit Toolbar With the letter still selected, click on the Duplicate button (left) a number of times. Each time you click on the Duplicate button, a new copy of the letter will be added to the Flipchart page. 18 Using the Text Tool and applying text properties Although you can write freehand on the Flipchart page, typing is also possible. Select the Text Tool (left) and click somewhere in the middle of your page. Notice that the cursor changes to indicate where the text will be positioned when you type. The Text Edit Toolbox (below left) enables you to select different text styles, such as colour, size and effects. Choose a different font and larger text size from each of the drop-down menus. Finally, click the Italic and Shadow buttons, and select a different colour from the Drop-down Colour menu. If you wish, you can also underline the text. Now type abc (below right). NOTE: If you haven t got a keyboard attached to your computer or if you re working at an ACTIV board, please see tutorial 7 for guidance on using ACTIVstudio s Floating Keyboard. 32 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial one 19 Changing text properties You can also change the style of the text after it s been added to the page. Select the Marquee Select Tool and double-click on the abc Text Object. The Object Edit Toolbar will appear again and from it you should select the Edit Text button (right). Now click the All button from the Text Edit Toolbox. This selects the text enabling you to experiment with different text styles again if you wish (see step 18 for graphic). NOTE: If you increase the font size, there s a chance that the text will spill over onto two lines. If this happens, drag out the right-hand Width Pick-up box. This should bring the text up onto one line. 20 Saving the Flipchart Select Menu > Flipchart > Save To (left and below). You ll be given the option of where to save your Flipchart: to your My Flipcharts folder, your Shared Flipcharts folder, or to another location of your choice. In this instance, select My Flipcharts - it s a good idea to keep all your Flipcharts saved together in this location so that you can easily locate them. The Save a Flipchart dialogue box should then appear. Type mytutorial_1 as the file name and then click the Save button. Hopefully, you now feel comfortable using a small selection of ACTIVstudio s core tools. Select Menu > Exit to quit ACTIVstudio. 34 34 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL TWO 1 Opening a previously saved Flipchart Launch ACTIVstudio as you did in Tutorial one. When the Main Toolbox appears on the screen, click on the Menu button (right) and select Flipchart > Open from > My Flipcharts. You can then select mytutorial_1 and press OK. The Flipchart that you worked on in the first tutorial should now open. 2 Re-saving a Flipchart with a different file name Before making any changes to the Flipchart, you need to save it with a different name; this will protect the work you ve done so far, preventing you from overwriting it by mistake. Click Menu > Flipchart > Save To > My Flipcharts, and then type mytutorial_2 as your new file name. At any time, you can select Menu > Flipchart > Save to save your work. 3 Creating a new Flipchart page Currently your Flipchart has just one page. You can confirm this by selecting the Page Selector button from the Flipchart Toolstrip (below left). Flipchart pages are represented as thumbnail images in the Page Selector panel and at this point there s just the one thumbnail image in the panel. Select the Next Page button from the Flipchart Toolstrip (right). This will add a new page to the end of your Flipchart - notice the appearance of an additional thumbnail image in the Page Selector Panel (far right). The red border around the thumbnail image shows that Page 2 is the active page. At any time, you can change the active page by clicking on a different thumbnail image. Make sure that Page 2 is active and then click the Page Selector button again to return to a normal page view. 36 PART THREE Tutorial two 4 Using the Text Tool to create a page heading Select the Text Tool (left). You will now create a page heading, so click in the top left hand corner of the page to designate where the heading will begin. If the Floating Keyboard is in the way, click on any part of it that doesn t contain a key, and then drag it to another part of the screen. Click on the page again and type Creating shapes and exploring the Fill Tool as your heading. 5 Using the Pen Modifier Toolbox In Tutorial one, you used the Pen Tool (left) to write on the Flipchart page. You can also use it to draw shapes we call these shapes annotations. Select the Pen Tool and draw a freehand square on the page. Although the Pen Tool enables you to draw freely, the end result is often uneven and lacking precision. A number of tools are available to help you create neater shapes. A number of pre-defined shapes and pen effects are available to you in the Pen Modifier Toolbox; this can be launched by clicking on the Pen Tool. Select the Rectangle Tool (left) and then choose a new colour and pen width as if you were using the Pen Tool in its normal mode. To place and size the shape, just click and drag on the page (below). You can make the shape as square or as rectangular as you like. 36 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial two 6 Customising the Main Toolbox Your new shape can then be filled with colour; however, this means adding another tool to the Main Toolbox - the Main Toolbox has fourteen default tools, but this represents only a small fraction of the tools available to you in ACTIVstudio. Select Menu > Toolbox Customise > Tool Store (right) to see the full range of tools. Before you can use any of the tools from the Tool Store, you need to drag them into the Main Toolbox. Drag the Fill Tool (below) from the Tool Store directly into the Main Toolbox and then click Finish. 7 Filling a shape with colour Now activate the Fill Tool (left) and choose any colour from the Colour Palette. Click in the centre of the new rectangle shape and fill it with your new colour (right). AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 37

PART THREE Tutorial two 8 Customising the Colour Palette At the moment, you have a choice of just eight colours. Choose Menu > Toolbox Customise > Colours > 24 (right) and the Colour Palette will provide you with a more comprehensive set of colours (below). 9 Filling the page background with colour Changing the colour of the page background is similar to filling a shape. Select a new a colour, but this time, click outside of the shapes, on the page background. The background will be filled with the new colour (below). Before moving on to the next step, refill the page background with white. 10 Using the Pen Modifier Tool to create a custom shape Sometimes you may want to create a shape not provided in the Pen Modifier Toolbox; for example a triangle. However, you can create additional shapes quite easily with the Pen Modifier Toolbox s Straight Line Tools (below). Use just the Straight Line Tool and the Horizontal Line Tool to create a triangle on the page - click and drag to position a line. Remember, the Undo Tool is there to fix any mistakes. 38 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial two 11 Grouping individual objects At this stage, you can select, move and edit the individual lines of your triangle independently of each other. By grouping its lines, the triangle can be selected with one click and then moved, scaled or rotated in exactly the same way as the shapes in the Pen Modifier Toolbox. To group the triangle, use the Marquee Select Tool to drag over the three lines. When Pick-up boxes surround the entire shape, double-click on one of the lines, click on the Properties button in the Object Edit Toolbar (right) and then select Grouped from the box that appears (below). Close the dialogue box by clicking the cross in its top right hand corner. 12 Filling a custom shape/flooding a page with colour When it comes to filling the triangle shape with colour, something unexpected happens. Select the Fill Tool and choose a new colour from the Colour Palette. When you click inside of the triangle shape, the Flipchart page is flooded with colour (right). This is because you can only fill a shape if it originates from one continuous line the triangle is made from three individual lines even though you have now grouped them. Before moving on to the next step, refill the page background with white. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 39

PART THREE Tutorial two 13 Creating a fillable custom shape When creating custom shapes, it s often best to use the Point-to-Point Tool, which draws one continuous line and creates a fillable shape. To draw a fillable triangle, select the Point-to-Point Tool from the Pen Modifier Toolbox (left) and click at three different points on the page to place the corners of your new triangle. A continuous line will be drawn between each of the points (below left). When you click again at the triangle s starting point, if you are close enough to where you began, the lines will close to form a complete shape. Choose a new colour from the Colour Palette and then click inside the shape with the Fill Tool. This should fill your shape and not flood the page (above right). Save your Flipchart and exit ACTIVstudio. 40 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL THREE 1 Loading a previously saved Flipchart and creating a new page Launch ACTIVstudio, load mytutorial_2, and then use the Next Page Tool to create a new page at the end of the Flipchart. Save the flipchart to My Flipcharts as mytutorial_3. 2 Copying an item from one Flipchart page to another Click the Page Selector button (right) to check that the Flipchart has three pages and then click on the second thumbnail image to make Page 2 the active Flipchart page. Although you ll be working on Page 3, you first need to copy the heading from Page 2. Of course, you could type the new heading from scratch, but this method will ensure that the heading appears in the same place on each page. Make sure that the Marquee Select Tool is active and then simply drag the Page 2 heading from the main Flipchart page directly on to the Page 3 thumbnail image. Select Copy here from the pop-up menu that appears (below). Page 3 becomes the active page - indicted by the red border surrounding the thumbnail image. Click on the Page Selector button again to return to a normal view of Page 3. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 41

PART THREE Tutorial three 3 Editing a Text Object Now you need to edit the heading. Making sure you are on Page 3, double-click inside of the heading and select the Edit Text button from the Object Edit Toolbar (below). Click the All button in the Text Edit Toolbox to select the text (right), and then type your new heading: Exploring the Resource Library. As you type, the old heading will be replaced. 4 Opening the Resource Library Now click on the Resource Library Tool, which sits in the Flipchart Toolstrip (right). As you can see, the Resource Library is split into many different sections and categories. Although categorisation makes it easier for you to find specific resources, it can also be difficult to remember what each button represents. 5 Using Tool Tips TIP: When you hover over each of ACTIVstudio s tools and buttons with your cursor and then pause, a small boxed description called a Tool Tip will appear. Tool Tips can be useful for reminding you of a button s function without you having to click to find out. 6 Accessing Shared Resources Up until now, your pages have contained graphics that you ve created yourself. However, there are thousands of pre-made items available to you in the Resource Library. To access the full range of ACTIVstudio resources, it is important to make sure that you're in the Shared Resource Library. Make sure that the Shared Resource Library is active (below) and remember that you can use the Tool Tips function if you are at all uncertain about which button is which. 42 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial three 7 Using the Resource Tree to view resources At this point, if the Resource Tree isn t visible, click on the Show Resource Tree button (right). By clicking on the plus symbols (below), you can expand the list and view the full range of resources - clicking on the minus symbols contracts the list. 8 Selecting a Shared Image from the Resource Library Click the Shared Images button. This is the button containing the picture frame icon but again, use the Tool tips if you are unsure. Select Animals > Insects (right) from the list of resources. The thumbnail images in the left hand panel change to reflect your choice. These images enable you to preview the contents of the current category before choosing a specific resource. TIP: Click the Resource Library menu button and select Labels; this adds a description underneath each of the thumbnail images. 9 Adding items from the Resource Library to the Flipchart page Make sure that Drag and Drop is selected (right) and then drag 3 different insect images from the Resource Library onto the Flipchart page. If it is in the way, move the Resource Library by clicking and dragging its title bar. 10 Roll-up the Resource Library When the images are in place on your page, move the Resource Library to the top left hand corner of the page and then click on the Roll-up button (right). In its rolled-up state, the Resource Library takes up less screen space; however, it still remains accessible. Just click on the Roll-up button again next time you want to use the Resource Library. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 43

PART THREE Tutorial three 11 Using the Object Edit Toolbox to duplicate an image Now with the Marquee Select Tool, double-click in the centre of one of the images. When the Object Edit Toolbar is launched, click on the Duplicate button (left) twice so that you have 3 copies of the image on the page. Drag each new instance of the image into its own space. 12 Resize and rotate an object Using some of the Object Edit Toolbar s other tools, you can change the appearance of the scene. Select one of the three duplicated images and click on the Increase Object Size button (below left) a number of times the image will get bigger. Now select another of the images and click a few times on the Decrease Object Size button this image will get smaller. Now, all three instances of the image are different in size. Select any of the images on your page with the Marquee Select Tool. Change its facing direction by dragging the Rotation Pick-up box (below right). 44 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial three 13 Using the Flipchart bin Double-click on any other image and delete it with the Flipchart bin (right) you will be left with 4 images on the page. NOTE: You could use the Page bin to delete the image. However, when you re presenting at the board, it s usually much easier to reach the Object Edit Toolbar, which is always launched next to the selected image, than the Page bin, which may be a few steps away. 14 Setting the Quick Select Toolbox as default Placing tools inside of the Quick Select Toolbox provides you with quick and easy access to them every time you right-click on the page. This toolbox can be launched as and when required; however, ACTIVstudio is initially configured to reveal a pop-up menu instead of the Quick Select Toolbox. Let s change this. Select Menu > Studio Settings (left). Then choose Toolboxes and select the box entitled Show Quick Select Toolbox. Click OK to exit Studio Settings and return to your page. 15 Customising the Quick Select Toolbox The Quick Select Toolbox is launched directly above wherever you right-click, whether this be on an image or on the page background; an especially useful feature if you customise the Quick Select Toolbox to include your most frequently used tools. In a moment, you will add some labels to the images on your page. However, to make this an easier task, you can customise the Quick Select Toolbox to include the Recognition Tool. Select Menu > Toolbox Customise > Tool Store, drag the Recognition Tool from the Tool Store directly into the Quick Select Toolbox (right) and then click Finish. NOTE: The Recognition feature only works when you have an ACTIV board or an ACTIVslate connected. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 45

PART THREE Tutorial three 16 Configuring the Recognition Tool Right-click on the page and then from the Quick Select Toolbox, select the Recognition Tool (left). First make sure that recognition is enabled. The Recognition On/Off button should be green - if it is red, click it to enable recognition. The tool should then be set to recognise letters by clicking on the ABC button (see the Help files for more information about shape or number recognition). By default, the tool should already be set to recognise UK English. Finally the slider should be set to the halfway position (left); this sets the delay that will occur before handwriting is converted to text. Don t close the Recognition Toolbox just yet. 17 Producing Editable Text Objects with the Recognition Tool With recognition enabled, ACTIVstudio attempts to recognise freehand handwriting and convert it into an editable Text Object. Choose black from the Colour Palette and also a size 2 pen. Now write labels next to each of the insect images (below right) - if you don t know the name of the insect, roll-out the Resource Library and then look at the thumbnail image s label in the preview pane. Remember that text can be selected and deleted if it doesn t turn out quite how you expected. You might have to practise your technique and experiment with the Recognition Tool before you get the hang of it. In the meantime, use the Alternatives button (below), for additional spelling suggestions. Apply the same style to each of your labels and then close the Recognition Toolbox. 46 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial three 18 Selecting a Shared Background Finally, click the Shared Backgrounds button (left) followed by Other > Sky from the Resource Tree. You can use the thumbnails to preview the different backgrounds in this category. Make sure that Drag and Drop is selected and then drag the sky and clouds background out of the Resource Library and onto the Flipchart page. Double-click on the new page background and then click the Properties button. The background can be made to fit the page by choosing Stretch Fit from the Tile Fit drop-down menu (below). You can now save the Flipchart and quit ACTIVstudio. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 47

Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL FOUR 1 Loading a previously saved Flipchart Open ACTIVstudio, load mytutorial_3, and before you do anything else, re-save the Flipchart as mytutorial_4. Page 4 will use much of the same content as Page 3, including some of the images and labels. However, thankfully you don t have to create everything again from scratch; You don t even have to copy and paste as it s much easier to duplicate the entire page and then delete the bits you don t need. 2 Duplicating a Flipchart page Click on the Page Selector button in the Flipchart Toolstrip and then make sure that Page 3 is the active page by clicking on its thumbnail. Double-click on the main Page 3 background, and then select the Duplicate Page button from the Page Edit Toolbar (right). When you do this, a fourth thumbnail image will appear. Click on it to make Page 4 the active page (right) and then click the Page Selector button again to return to a normal page view.. 3 Clearing a page background Now remove the sky effect background the reason for this will soon become apparent. Click on the Clear Tool and select Clear Background from the menu (left). Instead of leaving the background white, click on the Fill Tool (left) and fill the page background with a light blue colour from the Colour Palette. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 49

PART THREE Tutorial four 4 The rub and reveal technique Click on the Pen Tool (above) and then select the same colour as your background light blue. Making sure that your pen width is thick enough, use the Pen Tool to cover up the labels (left). You should now save your Flipchart. 5 Using the Spotlight Tool - presenting a rub and reveal Not all of the tools in ACTIVstudio are used to create Flipcharts some have been designed purely to aid presentation. One such tool is the Spotlight Tool (above left). Select it and then choose Circular Spotlight from the menu. You can now highlight specific areas of the screen by moving the cursor over the Flipchart page - if the spotlight area is too large or too small, click and drag on the Flipchart page to adjust it. You can highlight each of the images in turn (left). Maybe you could encourage your students to come up to the ACTIV board and write their own freehand label next to the image - just click on the Spotlight Tool again when you want to cancel it. 6 Using the Eraser Tool - presenting a rub and reveal You can show your students whether their answers are right or wrong by selecting the Eraser Tool (left) and erasing both the students labels and also the light blue label masks that you used to cover-up your original labels (left). The original labels won t be erased as they re on a different layer; the Eraser Tool is only active on the front layer. You can exit ACTIVstudio when you re ready make sure that you don t save again or the next time you present the Flipchart, you ll see that your doodles have been saved onto the page. NOTE: Annotations are placed on the front layer in ACTIVstudio - labels created with the Recognition Tool are placed onto the middle layer. 50 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL FIVE 1 Loading a previously saved flipchart Launch ACTIVstudio, open mytutorial_4, and add a new page to the end of the Flipchart. When you ve done this, check your Flipchart has five pages and then re-save it as mytutorial_5. 2 Creating a grid For this activity, you need to set a grid background. However, instead of drawing your own grid from scratch, you can use one of ACTIVstudio s special grid backgrounds. Open the Resource Library and make sure that ACTIVstudio is set to search within the Shared Resource Library. Select the Shared Grids category you ll see thumbnail images of all the grids available to you within this section (right). Find grid 1 x 1 and drag it from Shared Grids onto the new Flipchart page. 3 Changing the size of a grid Currently the grid units are quite small; however, the size of the grid can be adjusted to suit your individual needs. For this exercise, you need to create a much larger grid. To increase the grid size, double-click on the Flipchart page to launch the Page Edit Toolbar and then repeatedly click the Increase Object Size button (right) until only 4 horizontal lines are displayed on the page. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 51

PART THREE Tutorial five 4 Enabling Snap to Grid The first advantage of using a grid from the Resource Library is that you can then apply the Snap to Grid feature. Double-click on the grid background and notice that the Snap to Grid Tool is now available to you in the Object Edit Toolbar (below right). The Snap to Grid Tool can be toggled on and off; this means that when the button is pressed, the function becomes active, and when the button is depressed it is made inactive again. Click on the Snap to Grid Tool now to activate it. 5 Creating labels Now close the Resource Library and add 4 labels to the page: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Write the labels freehand with Handwriting Recognition enabled (top right). The labels need to be quite large so that they are legible on the ACTIV board. Therefore, when the Recognition Toolbox is launched, click on the Font Selector button (bottom right) and choose 72 from the Font Size List. Click OK. 6 Lining up objects to a grid Using the Marquee Select Tool, drag the spring label so that it s lined up with the uppermost horizontal grid line and the far left vertical grid line. Notice what happens - the label snaps to the lines of the grid. Now using the far left vertical line as your guide, line-up the remaining labels, one under the other, with each label on its own horizontal line (right). 52 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial five 7 Adding resources to the Resource Library You may be able to use these labels again in future projects so it would be a good idea to add them to your Resource Library. Click on the Resource Library button in the Flipchart Toolstrip and then select the My Resource Library button (top left); this is where you should store any resources that you create or define yourself. Click on the My Text button (bottom left) and then drag the first label into the blue area to the right of it. You ll be prompted to enter a name for your label. Type spring in the first space, and then type label and also seasons into the description area below - it s always worth adding a description or keywords so that ACTIVstudio has a better chance of locating your resource during a keyword search. Close the Resource Library when you ve added the remaining labels to it. 8 Configuring the Handwriting Recognition Tool - language At the moment, the Handwriting Recognition Tool is configured to recognise UK English, but it can be set to recognise a wide range of languages. Click on the Menu button in the top left corner of the Main Toolbox and then select Studio Settings (below left). Choose the User Input option, and under Handwriting Recognition Language, select French from the Drop-down menu (below right). AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 53

PART THREE Tutorial five 9 Using the Handwriting Recognition Tool Now when you click on the Recognition Tool and enable Handwriting Recognition, ACTIVstudio will convert your freehand writing to French characters; however, note that it will not provide translations for you. Choose a shade of red from the Colour Palette and add four more labels to the Flipchart page: printemps, ete, automne and hiver - the French equivalents of the English seasons. Using the Marquee Select Tool, line-up the French labels in a column to the right of your first column and use the grid as a guide (right). Take care to ensure that the labels are scrambled and not lined-up next to their English equivalents. Finally you can illustrate the page with some seasonal images from the Resource Library and reset the Recognition Tool to UK English before you forget. 10 Turning off grid visibility Now add the final touches to your Flipchart before presenting it to your class. Double-click on the Flipchart page and choose the Grid Mask Tool from the Page Edit Toolbar (below); this is another toggle tool so the function will remain active until the button is clicked again. When you mask a grid it becomes invisible, but it doesn t cease to function. As a final touch, why not use the Fill Tool to colour the page background pale blue or pale yellow? When you are happy with the way your page looks, save the Flipchart. 54 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial five 11 Using the Reveal Tool during a presentation You can liven up the presentation of your Flipchart by using another of ACTIVstudio s presentation tools - the Reveal Tool (right). When you activate it, you ll see that the screen is blacked out and You ll also notice that when you hover over the screen with your cursor, it changes to indicate the direction of the reveal - clicking in the top section and then dragging downwards reveals the screen from the top, while clicking in the bottom section and dragging upwards will reveal the screen from the bottom. Drag the reveal from left to right until the English labels are visible (bottom left) - stop just before you reveal your French labels. Involve the class and ask them if they know the names of the seasons in French before revealing the remainder of the Flipchart. You can then invite your students to drag the French labels to their English equivalents (below right). Each label will snap to the grid, even though you ve made it invisible. When you want to cancel the Reveal function, click on the Reveal Tool again. Finally exit ACTIVstudio. 57 Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL SIX 1 Opening a previously saved Flipchart Launch ACTIVstudio, open mytutorial_5 and then create a new page at the end of your Flipchart. Use the Page Selector Tool to check that the Flipchart has six pages and then resave the flipchart as mytutorial_6. 2 Creating a heading Select the Text Tool (left) and create a heading for the page. First, choose a suitable font size and then type The Continents. If necessary, bring the heading up on to one line by dragging the top right hand Pick-up box to the right. 3 Using Shared Images Open the Resource Library and navigate to Shared Resource Library > Shared Images > Maps. Make sure that the transparent and drag and drop options are checked and then drag the map labelled World1_svga, onto the Flipchart page (right). Close the Resource Library. 4 Using the Aspect Sizer Select the image and look carefully at the Pick-up boxes you ll see that the bottom right hand Pick-up box is similar to all the others except it has a diagonal line running through it. This is the Aspect Sizer (left). Using it ensures that the aspect ratio of an image is maintained when scaled in other words, the image retains its proportions and doesn t distort. Click and drag the Aspect Sizer diagonally to increase the size of the map. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 57

PART THREE Tutorial six 5 Moving objects between layers Now that it s been enlarged, some of the map image may obscure parts of the heading. To overcome this, you can move the image onto the layer behind the heading. Double-click on the image and then click on the Properties button in the Object Edit Toolbar (top right). Select Appearance and change the Layer from Middle to Back (bottom right). 6 Adding the Colour Picker Tool to the Main Toolbox You can now colour the background of your page. Previously you ve used the colours in the Colour Palette as your fill colour; however, this limits your choice of colours. Select Menu > Toolbox Customise > Tool Store and drag the Colour Picker Tool from the Tool Store (left) into the Main Toolbox. Click Finish to close the Tool Store. 7 Re-defining a Colour Swatch Now you can select any colour from the Flipchart page. When you select the Colour Picker, you ll see that it already has a colour assigned to it the colour with the blue border in the Colour Palette. The current active colour will be overwritten when you choose your new colour - if the active colour is a colour that you d actually like to keep, just click on a different colour that you don t mind losing. Select the luminous green Colour Swatch (right). You have three other greens available to you in the Colour Palette so it isn t too important that you keep this particular shade. 8 Resetting the configuration of the Main Toolbox NOTE: If you overwrite a colour by mistake, just select Menu > Studio Settings > Toolboxes > Reset all Toolboxes. 58 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial six 9 Using the Colour Picker Tool When the Colour Picker Tool is active, the cursor changes to show a cross hair when you move it over the map if you click, the Colour Picker will select the colour directly under the cross hair. Move over Russia and click on the blue fill; this will replace green swatch and become the new active colour. Select the Fill Tool, and as you ve done previously, fill the page background with the new colour (right). 10 Filling part of an image with the Fill Tool Although the background now looks better, Russia needs to look more distinctive. From the Colour Palette, select a colour that hasn t already been used on the map. Use it to colour Russia (right). 11 Using the Page Zoom Tool to magnify an image Select the Page Zoom Tool (right) and then click on the page and hold. After a second or two, the magnification of the Flipchart page will start to increase. To fill the page heading with the same colour as the country borders, zoom right in on them and use the Colour Picker Tool again to select the colour of the border. 12 Using the Page Scale button to restore the page view A right click and hold, as opposed to a left click and hold, zooms the page back out. However, the quickest and most reliable method of decreasing the scale again is to select the Page Scale button (far left) from the Title bar, followed by Original Scale (left). 13 Using the Fill Tool to fill a Text Object Select the Fill Tool (left) and then colour the page heading with the new colour by clicking on each of the words in turn. Make sure that you click exactly on the letters or you may unintentionally flood the Flipchart page with colour. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 59

PART THREE Tutorial six 14 Saving text in Page Notes Click the Page Notes button (right), which is next to the Page Scale button in the Flipchart s Title bar. Type a vertical list of the continents excluding Antarctica, in the window: Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Asia, and Australia (far right). Rescale the window do this by dragging its edges - so that it s in the top right hand corner of the screen and doesn t obscure your view of the map. Close the Page Notes window. Now you should save the Flipchart - note that Page Notes are automatically saved with the Flipchart. 15 Adding text from Page Notes to the Flipchart page When presenting your Flipchart, you can open Page Notes again notice that ACTIVstudio remembers the position you chose for the Page Notes window. Highlight the first continent label and add it to the page by clicking the Add to Page button at the bottom of the Page Notes window (below). Repeat this for each of the labels and drag each label to its correct position on the map. 16 Using Page Reset When your students have had a minute to take in the name and position of each continent, click the Page Reset button in the Flipchart Toolstrip (right); this reverts to the previously saved version of the Flipchart page - a page with no labels. Your students can then be invited up to the board to place and line up the labels for themselves. Remember not to save the Flipchart again as this will save the labels in their current position on the page. 60 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL SEVEN 1 Launching ACTIVstudio and entering Desktop mode Launch ACTIVstudio and open mytutorial_6 from My Flipcharts. Create a new page at the end of the Flipchart and then use the Page Selector to check that there are seven pages. Re-save the Flipchart as mytutorial_7. First, type the heading Annotating over the desktop/desktop Flipcharts and then click on the Flipchart button (right); this hides the Flipchart and allows you to access other programs and files on your computer even though ACTIVstudio is still running. 2 Launching another application while in Desktop mode If you have Microsoft Word installed on your computer, launch it now by selecting Start > All Programs > Microsoft Word (below). Don t worry if you don t have Microsoft Word, you can use WordPad instead. To open WordPad choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > WordPad. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 61

PART THREE Tutorial seven 3 Using the Floating Keyboard within a word processing application With your word processing application active, click on the Power Tools button (top left) and select the Floating Keyboard from the Power Tools Toolbox (bottom left). Click inside the word processing application to give it the focus. Then, on three different lines, type Red Circle, Blue Square, and Green Triangle (below). If you like, you can use your word processing application s formatting options to stylise the text. 4 Enabling Copy mode Return to the Main Toolbox and click the Annotate over Desktop button (right). ACTIVstudio replaces your real desktop with a copy of whatever s on your screen when the button is clicked. You can t edit the text anymore because it s now part of an image, not an editable document; however, you can annotate over the top of the document. Combined, we refer to the image and the annotations as the Desktop Flipchart. 5 Annotating over an application with the Highlighter Tool and the Pen Tool Click on the Highlighter Tool and select a light colour, such as yellow, from the Colour Palette. If necessary, adjust the highlighter s width, and then highlight the section of text that reads Red Circle. Next, click on the Pen Tool and select a red Colour Swatch from the Colour Palette. In the space to the right of the text, draw a red circle (below). NOTE: It isn t only the Pen and Highlighter Tools that work in Desktop Mode. In a Desktop Flipchart, you can do virtually anything that you can do in a regular Flipchart; for example, you can add items from the Resource Library or add a grid to the page. 62 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial seven 6 Adding a page to a Desktop Flipchart You can easily add a page to the Desktop Flipchart - just click on the Next Page button. A message wil appear on the screen. Click the Tick button (right) to accept and add a new page. You can now annotate on Page 2 just as you did on the first page. 7 Reviewing a Desktop Flipchart On the new page, highlight the Blue Square label and then use the Pen Tool to draw a blue square to the right of the text. Add another new page to the end of the Flipchart and on it, highlight the Green Triangle label and draw a green triangle to the right of the text (right). Before saving the Desktop Flipchart, you can review the pages you ve created by using the Previous Page and Next Page buttons. 8 Saving your Flipcharts To save a Desktop Flipchart you must exit ACTIVstudio. Click the Menu button in the Main Toolbox and select Exit. At this point, you must be very careful as you re working with two Flipcharts at the same time the standard Flipchart, which is referred to simply as the Flipchart, and also the Desktop Flipchart. 9 Saving the main Flipchart The first dialogue box that appears contains the message Do you wish to save your changes?. Notice how the file name appears in the Title bar (below). Click the Tick button to save mytutorial_7 the regular Flipchart. Click it again if asked whether you want to replace the existing mytutorial_7 Flipchart. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 63

PART THREE Tutorial seven 10 Saving the Desktop Flipchart Another box then appears containing the same message; however, notice the Title bar this time the label says Desktop Flipchart (below). 65 PART THREE Tutorial seven 13 Adding User Defined buttons to the Shortcut bar To create a User Defined Button of your own, select Menu > Toolbox Customise > Tool Store, and drag a User Defined button (left) into the Shortcut bar - be careful where you drag it. Close the Tool Store by clicking the Finish button. Note: To remove a User Defined Button from the Shortcut bar, just drag it back into the Tool Store. 14 Customising User Defined button Right-click on your new User Defined button (below left), and then choose the Program/file option from the Keystroke Definer dialogue box. Click on the Browse button (bottom right) and navigate to desktop_annotation, which you saved to My Documents earlier. Select the file and click Open. In the Tool Tip bar, type Desktop Annotation Word Document. Click Ok and notice that the User Defined button s icon has changed to indicate the type of file that it s linked to. The Tool Tip text will appear when you hover over the button (bottom left) with your ACTIVpen or mouse. Finally, click the browser s Links button and choose Add URL as Text Object from the menu (bottom). 68 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial eight 6 Disabling actions Close the Web Browser - you ll see that the web address has been added to your Flipchart page as a Link Object; however, the link is too long. At the moment, it s impossible to edit the link because the Google TM search engine is launched whenever you click on it. Right-click on the Flipchart page and then from under the Quick Select Toolbox s menu, uncheck Enable Actions (right). 7 Editing the style of a Link Object You can now edit the style of the Link Object. Double-click on it and then click the Edit Text button in the Object Edit Toolbar (right). Delete everything after If you wish, you can embolden the text and also change its font size and colour while it s selected. NOTE: You ve only edited the style of the link not the actual web address (URL) that it links to. 8 Capturing an image from a website to the Flipchart page Now add a graphic to the page. Open the Web Browser again. Click on the Camera Tool (left), and select Area from the menu. Drag a marquee over the Google TM search engine graphic and then resize the snapshot area with the Pick-up boxes (below left) make sure that you cut out any surplus white background. To capture the image, select the To Current Flipchart Page option from the Photograph Toolbox (below). 73 Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL NINE 1 Opening and re-saving a Flipchart Launch ACTIVstudio and open mytutorial_8. Re-save it as mytutorial_9 without adding a new page to the end of the Flipchart. 2 Making a Tickertape from on-screen text Right-click on the The most comprehensive image search on the web text, and then choose Make Tickertape from the Quick Select Toolbox s menu (right). Instantly, you ll notice that a message containing the selected text starts scrolling across the top of the screen. 3 Using the Tickertape Tool to edit Tickertape text Click on the Power Tools button and then select the Tickertape Tool followed by Edit from the Drop-down menu (right). You can now change or edit the scrolling message. Completely delete it and type your own message in the Enter the Tickertape message space. The changes will be reflected on-screen as soon as you start to type. Click OK when you are happy with the new message. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 73

PART THREE Tutorial nine 4 Using the Tickertape Definer to edit a Tickertape s properties Now you can use some other features of the Tickertape Definer to change the appearance of your message. Try this (right): Change the Text Colour to white - click on the Colour Swatch and choose the white swatch from the Colour Palette. Then using the same method, choose dark blue as the Drop Shadow Colour, and select a Background Colour of light-blue make sure that Plain Colour is selected. Finally, you can change the Drop Shadow Value to 3. You can produce many different styles of Tickertape by experimenting with these settings. 5 Changing the Tickertape s speed The Tickertape s scrolling speed is pre-defined, but you can change this quite easily by using the slider in the centre of the Tickertape (right). Dragging the slider to the left slows down the Tickertape, and conversely, dragging it to the right speeds it up. Choose a speed that you re happy with. 6 Saving a Tickertape Click on the Tickertape Tool again and select Save To from the menu (right). You ll be given the option of where to save your Tickertape. Choose My Tickertapes and think of a descriptive file name, such as Useful Website. 74 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial nine 7 Disabling a Tickertape If you feel that constantly scrolling text is too distracting, you can easily disable the scrolling Tickertape by right-clicking on it. This enables you to choose the most appropriate time during your lesson at which to reveal the message. 8 Re-enabling a Tickertape Re-enabling a Tickertape is easy just click on the Tickertape Tool and select a Tickertape from the Most Recent Tickertapes list at the bottom of the menu (right). You can alternate between different Tickertapes at any point during your lesson. 9 Opening Tickertapes from the My Tickertapes folder If you want to launch a Tickertape that doesn t appear in the Most Recent Tickertapes list, just click on the Tickertape Tool and choose Menu > Open From > My Tickertapes. Of course, this assumes that this is where you saved the Tickertape originally. Make sure that you save your Flipchart again before exiting ACTIVstudio. 77 Tutorial One Breaker TUTORIAL TEN 1 Opening a previously saved Flipchart Open mytutorial_9 from My Flipcharts. 2 Arranging and deleting Flipchart pages Click the Page Organiser button in the Flipchart Toolstrip; this enables you to view thumbnail images of all of the pages in your Flipchart and also make changes to its structure. Select the third thumbnail image. When you click on it, the thumbnail acquires a red border. This shows that it s the active page - any edits will be applied to this page only. Click the Delete button in the Page Organiser Toolbar (below) to remove Page 3 from your Flipchart you don t need this page as it s just a less complete version of Page 4. If you wish, you can also re-order the pages - just select a thumbnail and drag it to the left or to the right. Click the Return to Page View button to close the Page Organiser. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 77

PART THREE Tutorial ten 3 Adding Page Effects Now add some finishing touches to your Flipchart. Right-click on the Next Page button in the Flipchart Toolstrip and then from under the Effect Drop-down menu choose Cube Face Rotate and a Speed of 1 (right). NOTE: This menu can be accessed through both the Next page button and the Previous Page button. Close the window and move backwards and forwards between pages to view the effect you ve just applied. Experiment with the different Page Turn Effects if you wish. 4 Using Page Notes when sharing Flipcharts Make sure that you re on Page one of the Flipchart and select the Page Notes button in the Title bar (below). You can add information about the Flipchart here in Page Notes. Maybe you could include a presentation outline, a summary or a lesson plan. In addition to this, you can also include notes on other pages with instructions about how to use each page; this can be useful if you share Flipcharts with your colleagues. 78 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial ten 5 Saving the Main Toolbox s current layout During previous tutorials, you ve modified the Main Toolbox - it includes tools that weren t a part of the default set-up. You ll probably find particular tools and toolbox configurations useful at different times. Fortunately, you don t have to re-customise the toolbox every time you need a different set of tools. ACTIVstudio enables you to save multiple toolbox layouts. To save the current Main Toolbox layout, select Menu > Toolbox Customise > Toolbox Layout > Save As (left) - you can then type tutoriallayout as the file name. You can open a different toolbox at any time - just select Menu > Toolbox Customise > Toolbox Layout > Open, and then choose the layout you require. 6 Do I need to save my Flipchart with meta-data? It s now time for one final save. However, first you need to assess whether the Flipchart should be saved with meta-data; if so, you ll need to enable the Flipchart Summary page. The inclusion of meta-data is just a way of making the Flipchart and its contents searchable. You need to include meta-data if you want ACTIVstudio or a search engine to find and list the Flipchart. If this means nothing to you, it s unlikely that you need to take advantage of the Flipchart Summary feature! If this is the case, leave it disabled and move straight to Step 9. AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited 79

PART THREE Tutorial ten 7 Enabling and viewing the Flipchart Summary page If you ve decided to save the Flipchart with meta-data, select Menu > Studio Settings > Flipchart and then click in the Show Flipchart Summary when Saving box (below). Now when you return to the Flipchart and select Menu > Flipchart > Save To > My Flipcharts, the Flipchart Summary page is launched before the standard Save a Flipchart window. 80 AN INTRODUCTION TO ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition 2004 Promethean Technologies Group Limited

PART THREE Tutorial ten 8 Enable keyword searching Enter a descriptive Title for your Flipchart (below) this is the name it will be listed under and is distinct from the actual file name. The Description should be informative but not too lengthy it doesn t need to include details about the Teaching Subject and Key Stage as the next sections are designed specifically for this purpose. If your Flipchart isn t for use in an educational establishment you can select Not Applicable for both of these areas. Finally you should enter Keywords that will identify the Flipchart in a search there should be a space between each keyword. Click OK to proceed. 9 A final save Save the Flipchart to My Flipcharts as mytutorial_10. Hopefully, you now feel confident enough to explore the rest of ACTIVstudio and make some Flipcharts of your own. Remember, you ve only been introduced to the very basics of the program and there s still a lot more to discover for yourself.
