Creating and Managing My Favorites This tutorial will guide you through the steps required to create and share My Favorites files. My Favorites allows users to select and save items while viewing collections. Once items are added to My Favorites, they can be viewed as slideshows or compared with other images within My Favorites. The items within My Favorites can be deleted or the order of the items can be changed without affecting the images within the collection. Users can create and save multiple versions of My Favorites. My Favorites saves links to items in collections on a CONTENTdm server. It does not download or save the actual display images to your local machine. This means that if changes are made within a collection, users will see the most current version of items in their Favorites. Using My Favorites requires cookies. If your Web browser settings do not allow cookies to be saved on your computer, you will not be able to use My Favorites without changing your Web browser's privacy settings. Any media file within CONTENTdm can be added to My Favorites. Favorites can then be viewed, ed, saved to your local machine, or posted to Web sites. The CONTENTdm PowerPoint Plug-in can be used to import My Favorites images and metadata into Microsoft PowerPoint. The PowerPoint presentation can then be edited and modified using the tools available in PowerPoint. Learn About Section I: Creating and Viewing My Favorites Adding a Single Item to My Favorites Adding a Compound Object to My Favorites Adding Multiple Items to My Favorites Viewing My Favorites Section II: Managing My Favorites Comparing Images Removing Images from My Favorites Saving and Sharing My Favorites Section I: Creating and Viewing My Favorites This section explains how to add items to My Favorites. You can add single items, a page of a compound object, or the entire compound object to My Favorites. You can add up to 100 items to My Favorites. Adding a Single Item to My Favorites Items can be added to My Favorites from the item display pages. You will see links to add items to My Favorites both above and below the item OCLC Page 1 of 9
Figure 1. Add to Favorites Figure 2. Add to Favorites within Bottom Menu To add an item you are viewing to My Favorites: 1. View the item that you wish to add to My Favorites. 2. Click Add to favorites. A confirmation message appears. 3. Click OK. The item and the item description are added to My Favorites. Adding a Compound Object to My Favorites When you are viewing a compound object, you can add the entire compound object or a page of the compound object to My Favorites. (Depending on the type of compound object, the page may be called a side.) Add a page if you wish to compare pages or view pages in a slideshow. You cannot compare an entire compound object with another, nor can you view an entire compound object in slideshow view. All pages and all metadata will be accessible regardless of whether you add the entire compound object or part of the compound object to My Favorites OCLC Page 2 of 9
Figure 3. Add a Compound Object to My Favorites To add a compound object you are viewing to My Favorites: 1. View the compound object that you wish to add to My Favorites. 2. Determine whether you wish to add the entire compound object or a single page to My Favorites. 3. Click Add document to favorites or Add page to favorites. A confirmation message appears. 4. Click OK. The item and the item description are added to My Favorites. 5. Click Back to Search Results to return to browsing or searching. Adding Multiple Items to My Favorites Multiple items can be added to My Favorites from the browse or search results pages by selecting the items and clicking Add to favorites. If you add a compound object using this method, the entire compound object will be added. Only items on the same page can be added at once. For example, you cannot select items on one results page and move to another page to select more items before adding to My Favorites. To add multiple items to My Favorites: 1. From the browse or search results view, place a check in the check boxes next to the desired items. If you are selecting all the items on a page, click Select all. Once items have been selected, Add to favorites becomes active. 2. Click Add to favorites to add the selected items. Figure 4. Adding Multiple Items to My Favorites A dialog box confirms that the items have been added to My Favorites. 3. Click OK to close the confirmation dialog. Note: Only the items on the current Web page may be added to My Favorites OCLC Page 3 of 9
Viewing My Favorites Once you have added items to My Favorites, you can view images as slideshows, compare images, delete items, or change the order of items within your Favorites page. This does not affect the collection itself. Up to 100 items may be saved to your Favorites. For each item that has been added to My Favorites, a thumbnail image is displayed. Click the thumbnail image to access the corresponding item. To view My Favorites: After adding items to My Favorites, click My Favorites from the global navigation toolbar in the CONTENTdm Web interface. My Favorites opens. To view items as a slideshow: 1. From the left side of the My Favorites page, click Slideshow. The slideshow viewer opens. Figure 5. Slideshow Button The top of the slideshow viewer contains a toolbar that allows you access to other functions. Figure 6. Slideshow View 2. To view the item metadata, click Metadata. 3. To compare images within a slideshow, click Compare. The compare window opens and two images can be viewed side by side. 4. To jump to specific images within the slideshow, use the drop-down list. 5. Click Previous or Next to move through the images in the slideshow. 6. Close the slideshow viewer to return to My Favorites. Note: Only images (such as GIF, JPEG) or PDF can be viewed in the slideshow. Compound objects, audio, and video files cannot be viewed in the slideshow. Section II: Managing My Favorites Up to 100 items may be saved to My Favorites. For each item that has been added to My Favorites, a thumbnail image is displayed. Click the thumbnail image to access the corresponding item OCLC Page 4 of 9
On the left are tools for managing items in My Favorites. These include the ability to: View images in a slideshow Compare images side-by-side Remove selected items (this does not remove items from the collection itself) Change the order of items within your Favorites page Create an HTML page consisting of My Favorites to save or share Figure 7. Tools for managing My Favorites Comparing Images Compare two images by using the two drop-down lists in the Compare section of the My Favorites page to specify items you want to compare. To compare items in My Favorites: 1. Select the items that you wish to compare by using the drop-down lists. Figure 8. Select items to Compare 2009 OCLC Page 5 of 9
2. Click Compare. Note: Only images (such as TIFF, JPEG) or PDF can be viewed in the compare mode. Compound documents, audio, video, and some types of full resolution files cannot be viewed in the comparison view. If an item cannot be viewed in the compare mode, item numbers are grayed out in the drop-down list. The comparison window opens showing the two items you selected. 3. To compare other items in My Favorites, use the drop-down lists at the top of the comparison window to select the corresponding item number. Figure 9. Comparison View Removing Images from My Favorites Below the Compare tool is the Remove tool. This tool removes items from My Favorites but will not remove items from collections. You can remove more than one item at a time by pressing the Ctrl key and clicking on multiple items. To remove images from My Favorites: 1. From the select list, select the number of the image you wish to remove. To remove multiple items, press the Ctrl key while selecting items from the list with your mouse until all desired items have been selected. Or, to remove all items from My Favorites, select the words All Items from the bottom of the select list OCLC Page 6 of 9
Figure 10. Select Item to Remove 2. Click Remove. A confirmation message appears. Figure 11. Remove Confirmation Message 3. Click OK. This removes the image from My Favorites but will not remove any images from their collections. Moving Images Below the Remove tool is the Move section. This tool allows you to reorder the items within your My Favorites page. To move images within My Favorites: 1. From the first drop-down list, select the number that corresponds to the image you wish to move. Figure 12. Select an Item to Move 2. In the second drop-down list, select the number of the new position where you want to move the image. 3. Click Move. Your My Favorites items are renumbered. Saving and Sharing My Favorites My Favorites can be saved or published for course lectures, posted to Web sites, or ed. As long as the CONTENTdm server is accessible to the recipient, the items and metadata contained on a published page may be viewed by clicking on the thumbnail images. Items in My Favorites are only links to items in collections on a CONTENTdm server. My Favorites does not contain or save the images themselves. To save Favorites: 2009 OCLC Page 7 of 9
1. From the My Favorites page, scroll down to the Save as Web page section. Figure 13. Save As Web Page 2. Type a name for your Favorites in the text box. This name will appear as a title at the top of the published page. If you do not enter a name, the title of the published page will be My Favorites. Click Create. A new Web page opens. Figure 14. New Web Page 3. From the File menu in the Web browser toolbar, click Save As OCLC Page 8 of 9
Figure 13: Save as Web page, HTML only 4. Choose Web Page, HTML only as the file type and select a location to save the file. In this way you may create several different sets of Favorites and save them locally. To add or remove or change the order of items in an HTML Favorites page or save someone else's HTML Favorites page as your own you must replace your existing My Favorites with the HTML page. Note: This process simply overwrites one cookie and replaces it with another. It does not overwrite images in the collection. To replace existing Favorites: 1. Open the HTML Favorites page. 2. Click the Make Favorites button located at the top of the published page. Any existing Favorites saved on the CONTENTdm server will be overwritten and replaced with the current Favorites. 3. To preserve your existing My Favorites file, save it to your local hard drive (using the Save as HTML feature described above) before clicking Make Favorites on another HTML Favorites page. Clicking Make Favorites stores all of the links shown on the page in CONTENTdm Favorites for the creator or the recipient (provided the CONTENTdm server is accessible to the recipient). Items can be compared, moved, or removed using the tools on the CONTENTdm My Favorites page OCLC Page 9 of 9
