BigTree Beginner Training This document follows the steps in a beginner training session. Log-in to the test server using your usual network account username (the part before symbol) and password. You ll be placed on BigTree s Dashboard where you ll find Training and Help Documents as well as quick links to areas you can access and a section for pending changes awaiting approval. Click the Pages button at the top.
On the Pages tab you ll see the DePauw website navigation structure. Under Subpages, each line in the Visible section represents a button on the website. Each of these can have pages inside of it.
The Pages button includes three different sections: 1. Visible 2. Hidden 3. Archived The Visible section are subpages that have buttons in the Navigation. The order listed within BigTree is the order the buttons appear on the public website. They can be easily reordered. Pages in the Hidden section are not actually hidden from the Internet. There s simply no button in the Navigation on the public website for them. In order to send visitors to a Hidden page, you ll want to add a link in your Page content somewhere. Archived pages are hidden from the Internet and generate 404 Not Found errors when accessed. Pages that have been Archived do remain in the database. They can be restored /unarchived later.
For sections that you have access to edit, the icons in the list are brighter. Delete doesn t become an option until a page has been Archived. BigTree won t prompt a warning when Archiving or Deleting, so be sure that s what you want to do when you click those icons. Return to the Dashboard. Click the EDIT link in the Resources block beside the section you d like to edit.
Click the Pencil icon beside the page you d like to edit. For existing pages, BigTree will automatically open to the Content Tab when clicking the pencil icon. This is where most of your page content lives. The Revisions button allows you to roll back and/or save previous versions of each page. Revisions are kept for a month. Use the Save button to keep copies of any you d like to keep longer than a month. Be sure to click the Edit Page button to return to the Content Tab.
Anatomy of a Webpage What are the different areas called?
If you re following along with a training session, change the Page Header from Sandbox # to Sandbox [your name here]. (In other words, personalize it!) Click on the Properties Tab. Change the Navigation Title from Sandbox # to Sandbox [your name here] (in other words, personalize it!) Note: my screenshots don t show this step.
Click back to the Content tab. The WYSIWYG ( W hat Y ou S ee I s W hat Y ou G et) Editor for Page Content is similar to using MS Word. For example, if you select text and click the B icon, the text will become bold. Scroll to the bottom until you see the Save buttons. Each button does something a little different. Next Step >> -- takes you to the SEO tab Save & Preview -- saves the page in BigTree and shows you a Preview of how it will look. You would then have the opportunity to Publish your changes live to the website. Save -- saves the page in BigTree. Someone would then have to Approve and Publish the changes before they will appear on the live website. Save & Publish -- Saves the page and Publishes the changes on the live website.
Click Save & Publish. And then let s check our work so far and make sure our changes look the way we expected them to. Find the gray Properties section above the buckets/link boxes. Click the word Properties to view the hidden menu. Now click the Live URL link. This will load the page as visitors see it.
In the example below, I ve loaded the main Sandbox page. Now I ll click to my personalized Sandbox (#1). That s what I expected to see. Great!
Let s look at how to add a link. Flip back to the Admin tab and edit your page. Select the text you d like to be clickable, and then click the link icon on the WYSIWYG editor toolbar. Paste your URL/Link address into the Link URL box. Click Insert.
Editing a Sidelet/Callout is easy. Scroll to that section and click the pencil icon on the Sidelet/Callout in our test page. Make your changes, and then click Save. Don t forget to Save & Publish the whole page to see the changes on the website.
Want to add a Photogallery? Scroll to that section and click Upload. Your image will need to be at least 350 pixels tall. Browse your computer for the image. Select it. Click Choose.
Be sure to fill in the Image Caption line to ensure accessibility for our visually impaired visitors. Need to make a change after? Click the pencil icon. Note: Photogalleries are displayed as long as there is one image in them. If you d like to delete the gallery, delete every photo in it using the red X icon. Don t forget to Save & Publish and then check your changes on the website to ensure visitors are seeing what you expect them to see.
Let s make a subpage! Flip back to the BigTree admin tab. Click into your specific sandbox section. Click the Add Subpage button to create a page inside that section/bucket.
New pages begin on the Properties tab. Let s look at what these lines mean. Navigation Title - the words on the navigation button. You can change your button text at any time! Page Title - the words that will appear on the tab as well as Search engine results. Publish Date - you can pre-date a page to have it appear in the future. Visible in Navigation - check this box if you want a button in the navigation External Link - creates a button that sends someone to a different page (Open new window opens that page in another tab) Template - what format/look do you want your page to have? If you re not sure, stick with Content. Pages using a different template have likely already been setup for you. Fill the lines in for your fictional Department Deadlines page.
Click on the Content tab and fill these lines in with information for your fictional Department Deadlines page. Click on the SEO tab. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. You can control what your page s address is by changing the URL Route. If your page has already been established, BigTree will redirect visitors from the old link to the new link. Meta Keywords are generally words found in the page s content that are important for that page. They re separated by commas. Meta Description is a brief sentence describing what the particular page is about (in this case Deadlines). If you don t fill these fields out, your page will use the default DePauw Keywords and Description. Customizing them for each page can help your popularity/ranking in search engines like Google. Once finished, click Create and Publish. Don t forget to check your work on the website like a visitor!
