3 Session Overview Create visually appealing presentations. Learn about Prezi & SlideDog presentation software. Discover tips and tricks for editing images. Utilization of logo.

4 What makes a professional presentation? Simplicity Color Scheme Text & Fonts Graphics Negative Space Cohesiveness & Consistency Tailored Towards Audience

5 Simplicity Simple, is often better. More complex designs and over use of images makes the target message less effective. Focus on the message, not the content.

6 Color Scheme Choose colors that compliment each other. Choose contrasting colors. Limit the amount of different colors used. If you can, choose colors that either relate to your organization, or to the target audience. If you have a logo, use colors that are in the logo.

7 Text & Fonts Use simple fonts. Don t use complex or hard to read fonts such as cursive. Don t use childish fonts. AKA no Comic Sans. My preferred font for titles or to use on graphics is Century Gothic. For the body of presentation, stick to a standard font such as Arial & Calibri. Choose a font color that goes well with your background or other visual elements you may have. Don t be afraid to use white! To make text that has a non contrasting color to the background stand out: use feature.

8 Text & Fonts Utilize Text as Graphics. Use a variety of sizes and fonts to change standard font, into a visually appealing graphic. Example: Use shapes to add to and change text.

9 Graphics Only use when it adds to the slide. Don t just add a graphic because you have blank space. Do not over use graphics. Too many graphics can distract viewers from the intended message. Utilize PowerPoint s built-in frames/effects. Don t rely on clipart. Try and use more modernized images. Try google images & pngimg.com.

10 Graphics Utilize PNG images. PNG = Portable Network Graphics Clear backgrounds. Cut out of the image. Include the keyword PNG when searching for images. pngimg.com.

11 Negative Space Negative Space is the area that does not contain any elements. Often when making a presentation, we try and fill up all the available space we can. This can lead to the slides being cluttered, and affects the overall appearance of the slide. Negative space is needed in order for the message to be clear.

12 Cohesiveness & Consistency Stick with one way. Never use a variety of slide transitions. Use the same colors/fonts/etc, throughout the entire presentation. Use punctuation consistently. Don t punctuate sentences on one slide, and not the other. Non consistent visuals detract from the presentation s message. More time spent judging the presentation, than actually analyzing the content.

13 Tailored Towards Audience If possible, every presentation should be customized to match the audience in which you are presenting to. Utilize Logos. Add the logo of the organization you are presenting to, to your presentation. Can be as simple as including it on the title or welcome page.

14 Prezi Presentation Software Online based. Limited features to free users. Can get some of the upgraded features by registering with your school . Non-traditional: no slides. Zoom and pan around one central image. Often seems more impressive than a PowerPoint. A bit more time consuming to use. Not as many content and text features. 15 PowToon Presentation Software Online based. Very limited in features for free users. Does have educational plans available as well. Non-slide style presentation. Video format. Animated Lets look at an example and explore the basics of using Prezi: {LINK HERE}

16 Image Editing Again, utilize PNG images. Photoshop best to use, if you have access. Best for removing backgrounds from non PNG images. Utilize cropping Get rid of unnecessary parts of an image to enhance the focus of the image. Utilize PowerPoints' built-in background remover. Not great, but can work for simple images.

17 Utilization of Logos When possible, use a logo. Customizes any presentation. If your organization has one, base your presentation off of the logo. Use the same or coordinating colors. Use the logo as often as possible, without cluttering or using when unnecessary. Creates familiarity and cohesiveness. Use audience s logo if applicable. Example: the CSNA Summer Conference 2017 apple logo in the top right of each of my slides.
