Animated text project plus report Project 1 provides you with a chance to interpret a part of a poem or music lyrics of your choice and express it in an animation using two-dimensional or three-dimensional letters. Techniques, explored in week 1 to week 5, such as animation set up, proper hierarchy, driven keys, rigid bodies and assigned gravity should be applied to the objects being part of the animation. Animation principles such as frame by frame, key-framing, path animation and morphing should be researched and applied to the animated interpretation of the poem or music lyrics. You will have to research animated text and typography to gain understanding of the project and genre. Your research findings will be documented in report form. The objects used for the animation are modelled in Maya using Primitives and Polygon, NURBS and Sub-Division object modelling techniques. That first project gives you the chance to refresh the knowledge gained in DES 231. All objects of the animation must be either shaded, coloured or texturised. eportfolio entry guidelines: In your report you should record all development stages, including a script and a detailed storyboard developed for your animation. Your report should further include a detailed description of the modelling process. In your report you should write about your editing process and reflect on animation techniques used and discussed in class.

4 Page 4 You should discuss difficulties that arose during the modelling process and how you overcame those problems. Your eportfolio entry needs to have an appendix with sketches, screen shots and additional research material included. Criteria Note: For more technical details on this project please refer to the black board course website Part1: Animated Text Project Quality of Animation How well does the animation interpret the poem Narration, story line Style and aesthetics Editing/Montage Synchronisation and Sound Use of appropriate animation techniques Quality of objects Duration Part 2: eportfolio entry Description of problems and solutions Quality of storyboard & script Use of Source Material Generic skill assessed Applying technologies Information literacy Communication Skill assessment level Assessment Task 2: Major Project 2 plus Report Humanoids are dancing (Shake your body). Goal: Product: Format: To produce a realistic character animation along a rhythm or a piece of music plus report Character dance animation along the rhythm of a short sequence of music plus report In this project, you will make one character dance or move to the rhythm of a short sequence of music of your choice. You can choose one or more dance styles and apply the style towards a fully modelled humanoid object. The process of planning the animation is as follows. You will: Develop a short choreography Write a script Prepare a detailed storyboard. In your project you will use at least one full walk and some additional dance movements. The emphasis will be on preparing the bodies for correct movements according to the beat of the music. The technique of rotoscoping can be applied to synchronise dance movements in a realistic manner. To achieve the most realistic movements you will work with skeleton chains, joints and joint positioning, rigging, the graph editor and special effects, such as drag, gravity and constraints. You will need to include music with the animation as and where possible sounds produced by the dancers to have the animation as real as possible. You will therefore demonstrate a solid understanding of digital sound editing. Techniques of integrating

5 Page 5 the sound with the animation explored in the tutorials must be applied to the dance animation. eportfolio entry guidelines: In your report you should record all development stages, including a script and a detailed storyboard developed for your animation. Your report should further include a detailed description of the modelling process.
