You can find both of the guides here (insert link to PEP - A Guide to setting up Assessment - SIMS & CMIS & PEP - A Guide to setting up Assessment Aspects Configuration ).

Widget Configuration The Frog PEP Assessment widgets can be divided up into two different types, filter widgets and display widgets. All of the assessment widgets can be found in PEP Widgets > Assessment. If you are not able to see these widgets, please contact Frog Support. Editing the widget options either takes place in the tookit by double clicking on the nested page brick and clicking the user fields tab or from the widget editor click the small Edit button ( ) that appears in the top right corner of the widget in the page editor when editing pages using the black edit button.

Filter Widgets By default when you place a filter Widget on a page it will affect all the assessment results displayed on the same page. For example if you add a Select Year Widget, when a user chooses a year all the display Widgets will only show data from that year. For most users this default behaviour will be adequate, but some advanced Frog users may want a little more flexibility. If you are such a user, the majority of the Parental engagement Widgets have a field called Filter Tag which can be set in the individual Widget options. This field allows you to link individual filter Widgets directly to specific display Widgets, rather than all the display Widgets on a page. By default this Filter Tag is blank. By entering a label in this field, you set the filter tag for that Widget. This may sound a little confusing so here are some hard and fast rules that should make it easier to understand.

Breaking down a page An example All this might be better understood if we show you an example page and then break down how it works. In the above page we have a bar at the top containing the filter Widgets and then under that two display Widgets, one by a specific month and one an overall display The Filters There are four filters at the top of the page: The Selected Child Widget is an existing Parental Engagement Widget and selects the child whose data is displayed on the page. This Widget has no Filter Tag field and applies to the whole page. The Select Subject Widget has its Filter Tag set to bysubject. This means that only display Widgets with the same Filter Tag name will use this filter. The Select Year and Select Classification Type Widgets have no Filter Tag set. This means that all the assessment display Widgets will use these filters, whether they have a filter tag or not.

There are two display widgets on the page. Both of the Widgets on the example page are exactly the same Widget. The only difference is that the Drama - Monthly Averages Widget has the Filter Tag set to by Subject and the Overall Monthly Averages Widget has no Filter Tag set. This means that the Drama - Monthly Averages Widget picks up the Select Subject Widget filter, but the Overall Monthly Averages Widget does not. This allows you to display the averages for a specific subject, next to the students overall averages for comparison.

The list of available filter widgets is as follows: Jump to Subject Select Classification Select Classification Type Select Group Select Month Select Subject Select Term Select Year The filter widgets available all look very similar, presenting a drop down box to the parent with the exception of the Jump to Subject widget. Jump to Subject The Jump to subject widget will display a list of all active subjects that a student is timetabled in for. When used in conjunction with a signpost as shown in the Building Assessment tutorial, it will take you from an assessment overview page to an assessment detail page for that particular subject. Select Classification The Select Classification Widget allows a user to set a filter using the Classifications created in the Frog Toolkit. This Widget has two options you can set in the Widget Options dialog. These are: Include "All types" option - Selecting this check box means that the option "All Types" will be added to the list of selections available in this Widget. Filter Tag - This is the Filter Tag name to use for this Widget. Leaving it blank means all the display Widgets on the page will pick up this filter.

Select ClassificationType The Select Classification Type Widget allows a user to set a filter using the Classification Types listed against each Classification. The Classification Type Widget has two options you can set in the Widget Options dialog. These are: Include all option - Selecting this check box means that the option All Categories will be added to the list of selections available in this Widget. Filter tag - This is the Filter Tag name to use for this Widget. Leaving it blank means all the display Widgets on the page will pick up this filter. Select Group The Select Group Widget allows you to set a filter using the Assessment Groups listed against each aspect in the Frog Toolkit. This Widget has two options you can set in the Widget Options dialog. These are: Include all group option - Selecting this check box means that the option All Groups will be added to the list of selections available in this Widget. Filter tag - This is the Filter Tag name to use for this Widget. Leaving it blank means all the display Widgets on the page will pick up this filter.

Select Month The Select Month Widget allows you to set a filter using the a list of months and years calculated from the current month and year.. This Widget has two options you can set in the Widget Options dialog. These are: Include all month option - Selecting this check box means that the option All Months will be added to the list of selections available in this Widget. Filter tag - This is the Filter Tag name to use for this Widget. Leaving it blank means all the display Widgets on the page will pick up this filter. Select Subject The Select Subject Widget allows you to set a filter using the Subject list imported from the MIS. The subject list will only contain subjects for which there is data for the selected child. This Widget has two options you can set in the Widget Options dialog. These are: Include all subject option - Selecting this check box means that the option All Subjects will be added to the list of selections available in this Widget. Filter tag - This is the Filter Tag name to use for this Widget. Leaving it blank means all the display Widgets on the page will pick up this filter.

Select Term The Select Term Widget allows you to set a filter using a terms list defined in Frog. This Widget has two options you can set in the Widget Options dialog. These are: Include all term option - Selecting this check box means that the option All Terms will be added to the list of selections available in this Widget. Filter tag - This is the Filter Tag name to use for this Widget. Leaving it blank means all the display Widgets on the page will pick up this filter. There are three fixed terms defined in Frog. These are: Christmas Term - Defined from 15th August to 25th December. Easter Term - Defined from 25th December to Easter Day. Summer Term - Defined from Easter Day to 15th August. Therefore, if you use any other term structure than the traditional three term system, this filter Widget will not work correctly. Select Year The Select Year Widget allows you to set a filter using a list of academic years generated in Frog. This Widget has two options you can set in the Widget Options dialog. These are: Include all Year option - Selecting this check box means that the option All Years will be added to the list of selections available in this Widget. Filter tag - This is the Filter Tag name to use for this Widget. Leaving it blank means all the display Widgets on the page will pick up this filter.

Display Widgets Assessment Graph The assessment graph will allow you to display assessment data in an easy to display graph for parents which will allow them to see exactly how their child s current level compares to previous ones. Depending on what is to be plotted, the graph may show single or multiple lines. If there are multiple lines, a legend will appear underneath the graph to identify each line displayed. The horizontal axis will be labelled for each month, with time increasing from left to right. The vertical axis displays the markscheme labels (which are imported from the MIS). If baselines have been configured in the toolkit they can also be displayed on the graph Below, you can see the configuration options available for the assessment graph.

Filter Tag When set, the graph display will only be affected by filter widgets that are set to the same filter tag. Width This sets the width of the graph in pixels. Height This sets the height of the graph in pixels. Group By This can be set to None, Classification, Subject, User or Group and allows you to configure how to group the results together. Each school uses assessment in a slightly different way so it may be required that you group your own results in the way which works best for you and your parents. The best group by setting for one widget may also not be the best for another widget. Include Baselines If this is ticked, baselines that are configured in the toolkit will be shown on the graph. Include Markscheme Scale If this check box is selected then the vertical axis of the graph will be populated with the relevant mark scheme.

Only in Classification This allows you to select whether to show all data from all classifications or just particular classifications. The options available here will depend on what you have configured in your aspect setup in the toolkit. Only in Group If you re using KS3 and KS4 as groups, this is the option you can change to only show results from a certain key stage if you would like to. As mentioned previously, this is a good way to prevent nonrelevant KS3 levels from confusing parents who would be used to looking at GCSE A-G grades. Only in last num days This allows you to specify a number of days from which to return results. Inputting 180 into the field will show results from the last 180 days only. The most important thing to note with this setting is that whilst today you would be viewing 180 days worth of results, tomorrow your 180 days has shifted forward by a day so it would be possible for results to drop off the end of the filter if not configured with this in mind. Only in Subject This option would generally be used on a subject detail page and allows you to configure the graph to only show results from a particular subject. Only in Type Allows you to select a specific type to show Attitude or Attainment for example. These are the Super Classifications. Max num markscheme labels Allows you to specify a maximum number of markscheme labels to display. Use markscheme description This will display the markscheme descriptions for each level on the left hand side of the graph. Turning this on may truncate the data showing on the graph depending on how long this description is.

Graph Considerations Identifying the problem The graph widget collates results per month per user. It starts off with set of data results. It then averages those results for each month creating set points for that month for each line it needs to plot on the graph. Months with no results available are skipped. It is this process of collating results that can potentially cause the most problems. All marks for a particular month are merged. This process can be problematic if the marks we are trying to merge come from more than one markscheme (how do you merge A,B,C grades with key stage levels for example?). Depending on the graph configuration, target and behaviour results might be merging with current attainment results: this can give a misleading and confusing view of the child's progress. Graphs are by their nature numeric before being plotted all marks need to be converted to numerical values: Some markschemes are already numeric, or the mapping from text labels to numeric values is defined in the MIS; others are not. Results can be skipped and not plotted on the graph if they cannot be converted to numerical values. Sometimes a markscheme looks like it is numeric already, but in fact it is not. A good example is a markscheme where '1' equates to excellent, '2' to good, '3' to average and '4' to poor. This appears to be numeric but works the reverse way round (results will potentially be plotted upsidedown!). Sometimes data to make sense of the marks on a graph is simply missing: some schools assign marks to an aspect in the MIS without associating a markscheme with that aspect. This makes it more difficult for Frog because we don't have any information on what those marks are or how they should be plotted. Deciding what to plot Many of the problems with the graph can be solved by being a bit more selective with what you are trying to plot. You can either use filters within the Widget user fields to restrict the data, or use the suite of assessment filter widgets. For example: Your problem is caused by students attainment/target and effort results all being merged together giving spurious results. It doesn't make sense to merge these so you need to decide on one type to display: you open the Widget properties and change the graph to plot only the current attainment. Problem solved. Your problem is caused by the graph plotting a mixture of GCSE and Key Stage results over a period of years. These schemes do not merge correctly and resulting graph is a bit odd. To solve this we define two new Frog assessment groups in the toolkit and assign the aspects to each group accordingly. We

then add an assessment group select above the graph: the user now chooses to view either the Key Stage results or the GCSE results. Hopefully the above two examples illustrate that problems are often caused by trying to plot too much data on a single graph. It is often better to add multiple graphs to a page that show particular trends than trying to cram it all on a single graph. Markscheme Merging Some MIS systems (SIMS) enforces limitations in that an aspect can only be associated with a single markscheme. In the Assessment Graph Widget we are collating data across a number of different aspects which might all have different markschemes. If necessary, the graph will attempt to merge those markschemes together. For example, consider a list of results which are a mixture of the markschemes which are defined in the MIS: GCSE Markscheme - Numeric Labels A*=10, A=8, B=6, C=4 Homework Markscheme - Numeric Labels E (Excellent)=3, G (Good)=2, P (Poor)=1 Given a list of marks in both markschemes Frog will: Choose a primary markscheme. This will be the markscheme with the highest number of different grades (as it gives the most detailed mark breakdown). In this case, the primary markscheme will be the GCSE Markscheme. For each of the grades in the Homework Markscheme, Frog will map that grade to what it perceives to be a numerical equivalent position in the primary markscheme. So for example, the 'G' grade from the homework markscheme occurs exactly in the middle of the 1-3 numeric range of that markscheme, so it will be mapped to the middle of the numeric range of the primary markscheme (value 7). In other words the merged markscheme becomes: Merged Markscheme - Numeric LAbels A* or E=10, A=8, G=7, B=6, C or P=4 In this case we have merged two markschemes, but the graph may need to merge many markschemes back onto the primary one. The scale on the left hand side of your graph always shows the primary markscheme values. Depending on your own markschemes, this merging process may work well, or not so, and this may be the cause of problems within your graph. If you are having problems with markschemes merging, you have two options to solve the issue: Update the definitions of your markschemes within your MIS. Frog imports the markschemes and uses the data to perform merges. If the merge is not working well, it might be solved by updating/adding more detail to the markscheme definitions in the MIS.

Divide and conquer: as discussed in the Deciding what to Plot section you can solve your problem by restricting what the graph plots so the incorrect markscheme merge never occurs (i.e. the data plotted does not have multiple markschemes). Arriving at Numerical Values Not all marks or markschemes are numerical. Any marks from non-numerical markschemes are simply skipped and not included on the graph. A markscheme is classes as numeric if numerical values for each mark is configured (in your MIS), if so these values are then used as the numeric marks. If there are no numeric values defined in the MIS, but the markscheme labels are all numeric, then the labels will be used as the numerical values. If neither of these conditions are met, the results from this markscheme are not plotted on the graph. This algorithm to determine whether a markscheme is numeric can lead to errors: take for example the markscheme: 1=Excellent, 2=Good, 3=Poor This markscheme has no numeric values defined in the MIS, but it is still classes as a numerical scheme because the labels are numeric. However, the graph will plot these values the wrong way round since it will treat poor (3) as being above excellent (1). To solve this issue, you would need to add some numeric values in your MIS to the markscheme definition. 3=Excellent, 2=Good, 3=Poor So as you can see with a little bit of consideration to how your markschemes are defined, and the numeric values associated with them the graph will then be able to properly average the values and the data you see will have some meaning. What if no markschemes exist? Most schools define and associate MIS markschemes to each aspect, but some schools have no defined markschemes, or markschemes attached to only some of their aspects. When there is no markscheme it is possible to define a minimum and maximum numerical mark in the MIS and Frog will import this to use as the marking range. Frog will treat all marks without a markscheme as numeric. Be aware the process of merging marks with a markscheme and those without a markscheme will be problematic and should be avoided by being more specific about what to plot on the graph where possible.

Assessment Latest Results The latest results widget will show a feed of results based on the settings you select. Display Description It is possible to record a description/comment as part of a result if this is ticked, the description associated with this result will be displayed.

Filter Tag When set, the graph display will only be affected by filter widgets that are set to the same filter tag. Number of Results This allows you to set the number of results that are displayed. Bear in mind that this setting can produce different results depending on what the group by setting is set to. For example, if you have group to set to subject and number of results set to 1 you would see 1 result from each subject there is data for. Group By This can be set to None, Classification, Subject, User or Group and allows you to configure how to group the results together. Each school uses assessment in a slightly different way so it may be required that you group your own results in the way which works best for you and your parents. The best group by setting for one widget may also not be the best for another widget. As mentioned previously, this is a good way to prevent nonrelevant KS3 levels from confusing parents who would be used to looking at GCSE A-G grades Only in last num days This allows you to specify a number of days from which to return results. Only in Subject This option would generally be used on a subject detail page and allows you to configure the graph to only show results from a particular subject Only in Type Allows you to select a specific type to show Attitude or Attainment for example. These are the Super Classifications.

Assessment latest results what can I see? The Arrows (in our image below the coloured red one) displays how that result compares to the previous result the student had in the same aspect. In our example, the student achieved a grade A on the 27th February However his latest result was a B on the 5th June This is a drop from his previous grade of A, and so the red arrow displays this drop to the user. The basic Assessment Latest Results Widget shows a variety of data for each result. Previous Results - You can see the previous result for the currently displayed result by hovering over the coloured arrow. Grade Lists - Hovering the cursor over the grade will display a list of possible grades the student could have achieved. These grades are taken from the grades that belong to the markscheme that the aspect is associated with.

Five other pieces of information are shown against each result: 1. Subject Name 2. Classification Name 3. Aspects Display Name 4. Grade Label 5. Date of Result

Assessment Month Averages The Assessment Month Averages Widget presents the average mark for each month. It is very similar to the graph Widget except that it displays the data in table form rather than as a graph. It has similar Widget options to the Assessment Graph Widget except there is no Group By option since the data is presented in a single column form only. Filter Tag When set, the graph display will only be affected by filter widgets that are set to the same filter tag. As mentioned previously, this is a good way to prevent nonrelevant KS3 levels from confusing parents who would be used to looking at GCSE A-G grades

Only in Subject This option would generally be used on a subject detail page and allows you to configure the graph to only show results from a particular subject Only in Type Allows you to select a specific type to show Attitude or Attainment for example. These are the Super Classifications. Markschemes and Merging The Graph and Monthly Averages Widgets are very flexible in the way they can be used and the information that they can display. When data is averaged, it needs to use a single markscheme as a reference point. If the data to be plotted contains multiple markschemes the results are all mapped back to a primary markscheme, which is chosen as the scheme that has the highest number of different labels available. For similar markschemes this works fairly smoothly, but there are unresolvable cases where the results are so different that any comparison or merging can lead to misleading results. A good example of this is any attempt to compare GCSE (A*, A, B, C, etc.) to Key Stage 3 markschemes (8c, 8b, 8a... 1a). In this case the automated mapping will still attempt to merge the data but the results displayed may not be particularly accurate, or make any real sense. There is no way easy way to resolve this situation in an automated fashion, and it is for this reason that assessment groups are provided in Frog. In this situation the resolution is to categorise the aspects into "GCSE" and "Key Stage 3" Groups in the Frog Toolkit, and to then use the Group Select Widgets alongside the Graph or Month Averages Widgets to display either GCSE or Key Stage 3 data, but not both at the same time.

Assessment Traffic Lights The traffic light widget allows you to show a snapshot of the recent attainment, attitude, predicted grade and targets on a subject by subject basis. It also compares the attained grades to the target and predicted grades in a way that is configurable in the toolkit, and presents the comparison in a "traffic light" green/amber/red state to give the viewer a simple indication of how the student is performing. A variety of fields can be configured against this Widget to allow you to display the traffic light colours, which columns to display and what groups may be used as well as a number of other configuration options.

Display Traffic Light Colours When selected this check box enable the display of traffic light colours as defined by the rules in the toolkit. Filter Tag When set, the graph display will only be affected by filter widgets that are set to the same filter tag. Include Attainment Column If selected, the attainment column will display an associated grade for the relevant subject. Include Predicted Column If selected, the predicted column will display an associated grade for the relevant subject. Include Target Column If selected, the target column will display an associated grade for the relevant subject. Group By This can be set to None, Classification, Subject, User or Group and allows you to configure how to group the results together. Each school uses assessment in a slightly different way so it may be required that you group your own results in the way which works best for you and your parents. The best group by setting for one widget may also not be the best for another widget. Only in Group If you re using KS3 and KS4 as groups, this is the option you can change to only show results from a certain key stage if you would like to. As mentioned previously, this is a good way to prevent nonrelevant KS3 levels from confusing parents who would be used to looking at GCSE A-G grades Only in last num days This allows you to specify a number of days from which to return results. Only in Subject This option would generally be used on a subject detail page and allows you to configure the graph to only show results from a particular subject

Attendance Subject Summary This widget has no configurable options and will show the attendance pie chart for the selected subject. This will only show data if you are using and imported detailed lesson attendance from your MIS.

Assessment Hints and Tips If Statements One of the things that can be quite useful is the ability to have a single page which displays data differently depending on which year a student is in. The variable selecteduser_ms_year allows us to do this. In order to set up an IF Statement widget, you would need a minimum of three pages. In this example, we ll use widgets based on the KS3 and KS4 groups. You would need to create a page called KS3 and place a nested page Frog brick on the page. Point this to the widget you wish to use and configure as required (making sure only in group is set to KS3). Copy this page and rename it KS4, edit the widget options and change the only in group setting from KS3 to KS4. Finally, you ll need to create an IF Statement page. Onto here you need to drop five IF variable bricks one for each school year. In the top three you would need to have a nested page brick pointing to the KS3 page if true and leave the otherwise box blank, Your if statement should contain the following arguments selecteduser_ms_year equal to 7 selecteduser_ms_year equal to 8 selecteduser_ms_year equal to 9 selecteduser_ms_year equal to 10 selecteduser_ms_year equal to 11 In the final two for years 10/11 you d need to have a nested page pointing to the KS4 page. Now nest the ID Statement on your page where you would like the widget to appear. When the page is loaded, the widget shown will be whichever IF statement is true in any case a parent would only ever see the relevant widget.

FAQ When I click Validate Frog Server, I don t get any additional options in my extractor The options will only appear if you have purchased the Parental Engagement Platform.
