3 Page 3 of 28 Introduction Launch Pixie Click the Start button, select All Programs, select the Tech4Learning folder, select the folder, and choose. Pixie will open. You will see a blank page.

4 Page 4 of 28 Open an Activity You can use Activities to learn about common classroom topics. Click the Project button on the toolbar. You will see the Project menu. Move the cursor over the Activities option in the list on the left. You will see the Activities folders.

5 Page 5 of 28 Click the Language Arts folder to open it. Click the Reading folder to open it.

6 Page 6 of 28 Click the Literature folder to open it. Click the Character Description activity. The activity will open. In this Recipe, you will create a project with information about the main character in a story you have read. For example, you might choose Wilbur from the Charlotte s Web. Use the Paint Bucket Tool You can use the Paint Bucket tool to fill solid areas on a page.

7 Page 7 of 28 Click the Paint button to show the paint options. Click the Paint Bucket tool on the tool palette. Move the cursor over the color palette. Click the color you want to use. Click the solid color option on the Paint panel.

8 Page 8 of 28 Move the cursor to the space you want to fill.

9 Page 9 of 28 Click the mouse button. The area will fill with color.

10 Page 10 of 28 Use the Paint Brush Tool Click the Paint Brush tool on the Paint panel. Click and drag the Size slider to change the size of the brush. Click the color you want to paint with on the color palette.

11 Page 11 of 28 Click and drag the Paint Brush cursor across the page to paint. To change colors and continue painting, click new colors on the color palette. Use the Paint Brush tool to draw details for the portrait in the middle of the page. Use Text

12 Page 12 of 28 When analyzing characters, you should look at their physical appearance, actions, speech, behavior, and how they interact with others. Click the Options button on the toolbar. Click a text object that says Double-click here to add text. Type a description for your chosen character. For example: Wilbur has a good, childlike heart. Continue to fill in the remaining text objects with character traits.

13 Page 13 of 28 Add a Page You can add multiple pages to your Pixie project. Click the Page button on the toolbar. You will see a blank page 2.

14 Page 14 of 28 You will see the words Page 2 of 2 at the bottom of the screen. On this page, you will paint a scene from the story that illustrates one of the character traits you mentioned on the previous page. Add a Sticker You can add Stickers to a page. Click the Stickers button on the toolbar. Double-click the Animals folder. Double-click the Farm Animals folder.

15 Page 15 of 28 Scroll down to find the pig sticker or select a different sticker which resembles your character from a different story. Double-click the sticker. The sticker will be added to the page. Move and Resize a Sticker The sticker should have green handles around it. Move the cursor over one of the corner handles. Click and drag to change the size of the sticker.

16 Page 16 of 28 Drag toward the center of the sticker to make it smaller. Drag away from the sticker to make it larger. You can move a sticker to a new place on the page. Move the cursor over the center of the sticker. The cursor will show four arrows. Practice What You Have Learned Illustrate a scene with this character interacting with other characters using the paint brush and other paint tools. To use the paint tools, click the Paint button on the toolbar. You can use the Spray tool to paint objects for your scene. Click the Spray tool.

17 Page 17 of 28 Click the drop down menu to select a category. Click the object you want to spray.

18 Page 18 of 28 Use the Size slider to make the object larger or smaller. Move the cursor over the page. It will change to a spray can. Click and hold the mouse button down to begin spraying the object. Practice using the other paint tools to finish your scene. Use the skills you have learned to add, move, and resize more stickers on the page.

19 Page 19 of 28 Add a Text Object You can add text to the page. Click the Text button on the toolbar. The text object will be in the center of the page.

20 Page 20 of 28 Type something the main character says in the story. For example: Do a back flip with a half twist in it! Change Text to a Speech Bubble You can format the text object to look like a speech bubble similar to a comic strip. Check the Bubble box on the Options panel.

21 Page 21 of 28 The text object will change to a speech bubble. You can move the speech bubble. Move the cursor to the center of the text bubble. The cursor will show four arrows. Click and drag to move the speech bubble to the place you want it to show on the page.

22 Page 22 of 28 The tail of the speech bubble has a green dot. Move the cursor over the tail and click and drag it to move it next to the speaker. Record Sound You can record narration for the page. Click the page away from any objects.

23 Page 23 of 28 You will see the Record button at the bottom of the Options panel. You are going to record something your main character said in the story. For example, if you chose Wilbur, you might say: Actually, I feel radiant! Click the Record button. Speak clearly into the microphone. Click the Stop button when you are done. Click the Play button to listen to your recording. Save You can save this Pixie project to work on it later.

24 Page 24 of 28 Click the Save button on the toolbar. You will see the Save Project As dialog. Type a name for the file. You will see the name in the File name field. Click the Save button.

25 Page 25 of 28 Export Project Click the Project button on the toolbar. You will see the Project menu. Move the cursor over the Export option in the list on the left.

26 Page 26 of 28 Click the Movie option.

27 Page 27 of 28 You will see the Save Movie As dialog. Type a name for the movie in the Save As field. Use the navigation on the left to choose a place to save the file. Click the Save button. You will see the Finished Exporting dialog.
