2 About This QuickStart Guide This QuickStart guide shows you how to install, launch, and use IntelliTools Classroom Suite IntelliPics Studio 3 right out of the box. IntelliPics Studio 3 integrates with other Classroom Suite productivity tools (IntelliMathics 3 and IntelliTalk 3) allowing for instant sharing of resources and making curriculum adaptation easier than ever. 3 Introduction IntelliPics Studio 3 is an award-winning multimedia authoring program for teachers and students. Using IntelliPics Studio 3 s menus and tools, you can easily make animated scenes, create talking text boxes, include video clips on a page, paint and draw, illustrate activities with backgrounds and pictures, record or play sounds, and more! Although it is simple to use, its powerful authoring features allow users to create a range of activities from coloring books, puzzles, storybooks, and games, to animated presentations and multimedia slide shows. In addition, teachers and students can easily create sophisticated, customized quizzes using a feature called IntelliQuiz. Instant-Activity Kits To help you create your own lessons easily, IntelliPics Studio 3 includes a selection of instantactivity kits. Each kit consists of an authoring template, a step by step tutorial, and a corresponding sample activity. Universal Design IntelliPics Studio 3 s universal design features make the program accessible to all students, including those with physical or cognitive disabilities. It is ideal for inclusion classrooms students can use the program with a mouse, an IntelliKeys adaptive keyboard, or a switch. Introduction 1
4 Getting Started with IntelliPics Studio 3 To best perform the lessons in this QuickStart guide, you should know basic computer procedures (using the mouse, clicking, dragging, navigating to a file, displaying a menu, selecting a menu option, selecting a listing from a drop-down list box, etc.). If there are multiple ways to perform a procedure (for instance, by clicking a toolbar button or by selecting a menu option), this QuickStart guide will often demonstrate each method. Saving your work is not required.* It is helpful if your computer is connected to the Internet, but this is also not required. Note The illustrations in this guide are intended to be similar to what you see on-screen. Some may differ depending on the computer system you are using. Tip * (Optional) To save your work: 1. Select Save As from the File menu. 2. Enter a document name in the Save As text box. 3. Click Save. 5 Step 1. Check that your computer system meets the following minimum requirements. 6 Step 2. Install the program(s). Windows Users a. Insert the Classroom Suite CD (or the single program CD) into the CD-ROM drive. The program installation starts automatically.* b. Follow the installation instructions that appear on-screen. * If your computer is not set up for automatic installation (the Auto insert notification setting): Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop. Right-click the CD icon and select Explore to see the CD s contents. Double-click the setup.exe icon in the content window that appears. Proceed to Step 2b. Macintosh Users a. Insert the Classroom Suite CD (or the single program CD) into the CD-ROM drive. A CD-ROM icon appears on the desktop along with an open window labeled Classroom Suite CD (or IntelliPics Studio 3 CD, IntelliMathics 3 CD, or IntelliTalk 3 CD). b. Double-click the installer icon in the open window. The program installation starts automatically. c. Click Continue and follow the on-screen instructions. 4 QuickStart: IntelliPics Studio 3
7 Step 3. Launch the program(s). Windows Users a. From the Start menu, select Programs \ IntelliTools Software \ Classroom Suite \ Classroom Suite. b. Click the Classroom Suite icon. Macintosh Users Double-click the Classroom Suite icon located on your desktop. Getting Started with IntelliPics Studio 3 5
8 Step 4. Sign in. a. The program opens to the Classroom Suite Sign In screen. Notice that the Sign In screen includes: Class drop-down list box lists groups of users created by a program administrator or a teacher.* User window shows users created by a program administrator or a teacher.* Sign In box enter a user name here. Quit click to exit Classroom Suite. Guest click to sign in as an unnamed student user. No password is required for Guest.? click for Help. b. If you haven t been assigned a user name by the program administrator or a teacher, click Guest (refer to the Classroom Suite Getting Started guide for instructions for creating users). If you have been assigned a user name, type your user name in the Sign In box. Click OK. If a password dialog box displays, type your password and click OK. After signing in, the Navigation Screen displays. * Alternate sign in procedure: select a class and a user if they show here. 6 QuickStart: IntelliPics Studio 3
9 Step 5. Explore the Navigation Screen. QuickStart lessons begin at this Navigation Screen. The navigation choices available to each user can be customized. A user signed in as Guest sees: Sign Out click to return to Sign In screen. My Work click for saved and recent documents. New click for blank documents and instant-activity templates. Activities click for curriculum activities. Adirectory path to the contents of the navigation window. You can use the Back and Forward arrow buttons to navigate the path. a. Click the New button (if it is not already selected). Your selection shows in the directory path. b. Click the buttons on the Window-view toolbar to see the different ways that folders and files can be displayed in the navigation window. 10 I. Animate a Picture This lesson shows you how to make a scene that includes an animated character (a cartoon ant crossing a trail in a park). Tip You animate pictures using the IntelliMation feature. To Begin a. Display a new page in an IntelliPics Studio 3 document: If you are continuing from page 7, you are viewing the New folder. Select New IntelliPics Studio 3. If you are continuing from another IntelliPics Studio 3 QuickStart lesson, select New Page from the Pages menu. b. Select Intermediate Toolbar from the View menu. c. 12 Step 2. Insert a picture on the page. a. Click Picture Library (above the page). b. Click the Animals category on the Picture Library toolbar. If picture category listings are not showing, click Categories on the Picture Library toolbar. Tip c. Click Ant. d. 13 Step 3. Animate the picture. a. Click Create IntelliMation (above the page). b. Drag the ant to the lower right corner of the page (the start point). b c. Click the 5-second mark on the IntelliMation time line (above the page). d. Drag the ant to the lower left corner of the page (the end point). d e. 14 Step 4. Play the IntelliMation two ways. a. Click Play Sound and IntelliMation (above the page). b. Click Play Slide Show (above the page) to play a full screen version of the IntelliMation. Note Slide Show plays all the pages in a document and then returns to the beginning page. c. Save your work if desired. 15 (Optional) Try one or more of these variations: Select a different background picture for the page. Step 1b: Click Backyard. Select another category and insert a different picture on the page. Steps 2b and 2c: Scroll to the Frame Animations category; then click Butterfly. Create a quicker IntelliMation. Step 3c: Click 2.5 seconds on the time line. Try dragging the ant off the page! Step 3d.:Press [Esc] while dragging the ant (or butterfly) off the edge of the page. Select the Authoring Toolbar from the View menu and use it to create an animated scene. Use an instant-activity template with its tutorial and the corresponding sample activity. Refer to the Classroom Suite User s Guide to learn how to: Animate two or more pictures on a page. 16 II. Create a Talking Text Box This lesson shows you how to make a text box that reads aloud when the user clicks it (useful for activity instructions and stories). To Begin a. Display a new page in an IntelliPics Studio 3 document. If you are continuing from another QuickStart lesson, select New Page from the Pages menu. If this is your first QuickStart lesson, start at the Navigation Screen (see Getting Started, pages 2 7). Click New, then select New IntelliPics Studio 3. b. Select Intermediate Toolbar from the View menu. c. Select Design from the IntelliPics Studio menu. 14 QuickStart: IntelliPics Studio 3
17 Step 1. Draw a text box on the page. a. Select Text Tool from the IntelliPics Studio menu (so a check shows next to this menu option). a b. Put the cursor on the page where you want a corner of the text box to be. c. Press the mouse button and drag the cursor sideways. b Design and Text Tool menu options selected d. Release the mouse button when you are satisfied with the width of the text box. The Text Tool deselects and the Select Tool becomes active automatically. Lesson II: Create a Talking Text Box 15
18 Step 2. Enter text and check spelling. a. Notice the blinking insert-text cursor. a b. Type Click this box to hear text read aloud. c. 19 Step 3. Set text box properties. a. Simultaneously press [Ctrl] on your keyboard and click the text box. The Properties dialog box appears. b b. Click the Text Settings tab. c. Click Read-Only Text (a check mark should show in the check box). d. Notice Expand to Fit is selected from the Number of Lines drop-down list box.this setting enabled the text box to expand downward to fit your text entry. Using this option, you can limit the lines of text in the box, if desired. c d e. 20 Step 4. Color and lock the text box. a a. Next to Show Background, click Change... The Pick Color dialog box displays. b. Select Yellow from the Standard Colors drop-down list box. Click OK. c. 21 Step 5. Listen to the text being read aloud. a. Click within the text box. b. Listen to the text being read aloud. c. Click the text box again to repeat the message. d. Save your work if desired. 22 (Optional) Try one or more of these variations: Click Text Tool on the toolbar to the left of the page instead of selecting Text Tool from the IntelliPics Studio menu. Change the text font and size. Step 2b: 1. Select (i.e., highlight) the text in the text box. 2. Select a different font and size from the Text menu. Change the color of the text. Step 2b: 1. Select (i.e., highlight) the text in the text box. 2. Select a different color from the Text menu. Move and resize the text box. 1. Deselect (i.e., uncheck) Lock Position from the Edit menu. 2. Drag the text box to another place on the page. 3. Drag a corner of the resizing frame and enlarge the text box. 4. Select (i.e., check) Lock Position from the Edit menu. Select the Authoring Toolbar from the View menu and use it to insert a text box on the page. Use an instant-activity template with its tutorial and the corresponding sample activity. 23 III. Add a Movie to a Page Tip This lesson shows you how to make a scene with a movie/video clip in it (fish swimming by the seashore). Click the movie to watch it! The Classroom Suite CD includes over 90 movies that you can insert into your activities, or you can import your own video clips. To Begin a. Display a new page in an IntelliPics Studio 3 document. If you are continuing from another QuickStart lesson, select New Page from the Pages menu. If this is your first QuickStart lesson, start at the Navigation Screen (see Getting Started, pages 2 7). 24 Step 1. Select a background for the page. a. Click Picture Library (above the page). Tip Click Categories on the Picture Library toolbar if picture categories are not already showing. b. Click the Backgrounds category. c. Click Next-> until Seaside shows on the toolbar (selections are arranged in alphabetical order) d. Click Seaside. e. 25 Step 2. Select and insert a movie. a. Select Insert Movie... from the IntelliPics Studio menu. The Movies folder displays. a Tip If the Movies folder does not display: 1. Navigate to and open the Classroom Suite folder installed on your system. 2. Locate and open the Media folder. 3. Locate and open the Movies folder. b b. 26 Step 3. Resize and reposition the movie. a. Grab a corner of the movie s resizing frame (the cursor should be a two-headed arrow) and drag it inward to make the frame smaller. a b. 27 Step 4. Set movie properties. a. Simultaneously press [Ctrl] on your keyboard and click the movie. b. Uncheck the Show Frame option. b c. Check Respond to Mouse Clicks if this option is not already selected. c d. Check Lock Position. d e. Click OK. Lesson III: Add a Movie to a Page 25

29 (Optional) Try one or more of these variations: Click the Insert Movie button (above the page) instead of selecting Insert Movie from the IntelliPics Studio menu. Frame the movie. 1. Simultaneously press [Ctrl] on your keyboard and click the movie. 2. Click the Options tab. 3.Check Show Frame. 4. Click the Frame Color Change button. 5 Pick a different color and click OK. 6. Click OK. Insert a movie from the Classroom Suite CD. 1. Insert the Classroom Suite CD. 2. Select Insert Movie from the IntelliPics Studio menu. 3. Navigate to the Movies folder (Media folder > Movies folder). 4. Open the desired movie. 5. Lock the movie. 6. Click the movie. Insert your own movie. 1. Save a MOV, MPG /MPEG, or AVI movie on your system. 2. Select Insert Movie from the IntelliPics Studio menu. 3. Navigate to the movie. 4. Open the desired movie. 5. Lock the movie. 6. Click the movie. Select the Authoring Toolbar from the View menu and use it to insert a movie on the page. Refer to the Classroom Suite User s Guide to learn how to: Add a page action to have the movie play automatically each time the page displays. Create a button that plays a movie. 30 IV. Paint, Color, and Stamp Tip This lesson shows you how to use Paint mode features and tools to paint, draw, color, and stamp pictures on a page. In Paint mode every selection in the Picture Library is a stamp. Stamps cannot be resized or moved once they are on a page. To Begin a. Display a new page in an IntelliPics Studio 3 document. If you are continuing from another QuickStart lesson, select New Page from the Pages menu. If this is your first QuickStart lesson, start at the Navigation Screen (see Getting Started, pages 2 7). 31 Step 1. Draw using the Brush Tool. a. Click Paint. Notice that Paint Tools have replaced Design Tools (on the left side of the document). b. Click Brush Tool. c. Click size 2 (on the toolbar to the right of the Brush Tool). d. Press the button on your mouse and paint an unbroken circle shape. When the circle is complete, release the button to lift the brush off the page. e. Draw an unbroken line completely across the page. Leave no gaps! Lesson IV: Paint, Color, and Stamp 29
32 Step 2. Color using the Fill Tool. a. Click Show/Hide Colors (upper right corner of the document). A toolbar of color choices displays to the right of the page. b. Click Sunshine from the Paint Box color choices. c. Click Fill Tool. The Fill Tool pours a selected color into an enclosed area. d. Position the Fill Tool paint bucket pointer within the circle and click. The circle fills with yellow sunshine! e. Now select Grass Green as a paint color. d b e f. 33 Step 3. Stamp pictures on the page. a. Click Picture Library. b. Click Categories on the Picture Library toolbar if picture categories are not showing. Click Next > until the Nature category shows. b c. Click Nature. d. Click Plant from the Nature picture choices. e. Click four places on the page where you want to stamp the Plant picture. Pictures may stamp on the page larger than they appear on the Stamp tool. Note Lesson IV: Paint, Color, and Stamp 31
34 Step 4. Undo and erase. a. Click Undo (above the page). Notice that the previous action (stamping the fourth plant on the page) is reversed. b. Click Erase. Tip Click Undo if you mistakenly clicked Erase All. c. Press the button on the mouse and drag to erase the black border around the sun (the yellow colored circle). 32 QuickStart: IntelliPics Studio 3
35 5. Finish the scene. a. Click Flower from the Nature picture choices. Stamp flowers on the page. b. Click Show/Hide Colors (if colors are not already displayed) and select the color Sky. c. Click Fill Tool. d. Click all the unpainted areas of the page to fill them with the Sky color. e. Click Show/Hide Colors again to hide colors. f. Select Hide Standard Toolbars from the View menu. g. Deselect Show Picture Library from the View menu. h. Save your work if desired. Continue with another lesson or select Exit/Quit from the File menu. Lesson IV: Paint, Color, and Stamp 33
36 (Optional) Try one or more of these variations: Paint or draw using a wider brush. 1. Click Erase All (to start over). 2. Click Brush Tool. 3. Select a different brush size. 4. Paint or draw. Paint or draw using different colors. 1. Click Erase All (to start over). 2. Click Paint Box. 3. Select a color. 4. Click Brush Tool. 5. Paint or draw. Paint with a stamp. 1. Click Erase All (to start over). 2. Click Picture Library. 3. Select a stamp. 4. Click a place on the page and, while holding the mouse button down, drag the stamp across the page. Drag slowly, then more quickly. Move a painting, drawing, or stamp using the Marquee Tool. 1. Paint or draw on the page. 2. Click Marquee Tool. 3. Outline an area of the page that includes the painting or drawing. 4. Drag the selected area to another place on the page. Select the Authoring Toolbar from the View menu and use it to create a scene in Paint mode. Use an instant-activity template with its tutorial and the corresponding sample activity. Refer to the Classroom Suite User s Guide to learn how to: Paint over a predesigned background picture or a predesigned background pattern. Use the Marquee Tool to copy portions of a painting or drawing for use as stamps. 37 V. Work With Pictures Tip This lesson shows you how to use Design mode features and tools to make a scene that includes overlapping pictures. In Design mode the page is analogous to a stack of transparent sheets (i.e., a page has + and - layers). To Begin a. Display a new page in an IntelliPics Studio 3 document. If you are continuing from another QuickStart lesson, select New Page from the Pages menu. If this is your first QuickStart lesson, start at the Navigation Screen (see Getting Started, pages 2 7). Click New, then select New IntelliPics Studio 3. b. Select Intermediate Toolbar from the View menu. c. Select Design from the IntelliPics Studio menu. Lesson V: Work With Pictures 35
38 Step 1. Try a background pattern. a. Select Page Properties from the Pages menu. b. Click the Page Background tab. b c. View the choices listed in the Background drop-down list box. Select Yellow Brick to see a background pattern. c d. Click OK. e. Clear the background from the page (repeat steps a d, but select --Blank-- as the Background Pattern). f. Before proceeding, check the IntelliPics Studio menu to verify Design is selected (checked). 36 QuickStart: IntelliPics Studio 3
39 Step 2. Paste a background from the Picture Library. a. Select Page Properties from the Pages menu. b. Click the Page Background tab. c. Click Insert From Picture Library. d. 40 Step 3. Insert and modify pictures. a. Click Picture Library. (Click Categories on the Picture Library toolbar if categories are not already showing). b. Click Next > until the Nature category shows. Click Nature. c. From the Nature picture choices, click Cloud twice to insert two cloud pictures on the page. In Design mode, every selection in the Note Picture Library is an object that can be resized and/or repositioned. d. Select the cloud on the left. e. Click Make Bigger three times. f. Select the cloud on the right. g. Click Make Smaller two times. h. Reposition the clouds by dragging each to a top corner of the page. 38 QuickStart: IntelliPics Studio 3
41 Step 4. Choose a layer for each picture. a. Select the cloud on the left (cloud #1). b. Simultaneously press [Ctrl] on your keyboard and click the picture. c. Click the Settings tab. d. Click the increase (up) arrowhead to change the Design Layer setting from 0 to 5. e. Click OK. f. Select the cloud on the right (cloud #2). g. Simultaneously press [Ctrl] on your keyboard and click the picture. h. Click the Settings tab. i. Click the decrease (down) arrowhead to change the Design Layer setting from 0 to -5. j. Click OK. 42 Step 5. Overlap pictures to show layers. a. Click Next -> and scroll to the Sun picture in the Nature category. b. Click Sun. By default, this picture inserts on Design Layer 0. c. Drag the sun behind the bigger cloud (this cloud is now set to Design Layer 5). d. Drag the sun over the smaller cloud (this cloud is now set to Design Layer -5.) e. Drag the bigger cloud so it overlaps the sun and the smaller cloud. f. Click Picture Library (to hide the Picture Library toolbar). g. Save your work if desired. 43 (Optional) Try one or more of these variations: Change backgrounds on the page. Step 1c or 2e. Select a different Background Pattern or Background Picture. Insert pictures from other Picture Library categories on the page. Step 3c or 3d. Select a different category and picture from the Picture Library toolbar. Rotate a picture using Rotate Tools. Step 3f. Click Rotate Clockwise and/or Click Rotate Counterclockwise. Resize a picture using the Properties of Picture dialog box. 1. Simultaneously press [Ctrl] on your keyboard and click a cloud picture. 2. Click the Settings tab. 3. Change the Horizontal Scaling setting. 4. Change the Vertical Scaling setting. 5. Click OK. Using Teacher Options Using Teacher Options, an administrator or teacher can create student users, enter students in a class, assign work to students, set user preferences, and generate reports. Note This lesson requires that you are signed in as an administrator or a teacher (rather than as a student or as a Guest). Refer to the Classroom Suite Getting Started guide for information about creating users with administrator and/or teacher permissions. To Begin If you are continuing from another QuickStart lesson, return to the Navigation Screen. If this is your first QuickStart lesson, display the Navigation Screen (see pages 2 7). 66 Step 1. Create a student user. a. Click the Teacher Options button. The Teacher Options dialog box displays. The left side of this dialog box contains list boxes and buttons related to User Management. The right side of this dialog box shows User Preferences for a selected user. b. Click the New... button. The User Properties dialog box displays. c. Enter the student s user name (e.g., Lisa B), first name (e.g., Lisa), and last name (e.g., Brown). Student passwords are not required. d. From the User Level choices, select Student. Note Students have fewer program privileges than teachers or administrators. e. Check the Use Talking Tooltips option if this option is not already selected. e. Click the Change Voice tab to customize the voice this student hears. f. Scroll through the list of voices and make a selection. Click Test to hear sample words read aloud. g. You have just customized the student s program preferences. 70 Step 5. Sign in as the new student. a. At the Sign In screen, select the new class you created in step 2 (e.g., Language Arts) from the Class drop-down list box. b. Click the new student icon in the User window in the Sign in box. (Or enter the user name you gave the new student and click OK.) Notice that the document that you assigned the new student (in step 3) displays, rather than the Navigation Screen. c. Click the Rhyme Scheme button and listen to the instructions read aloud in the voice that you chose in step 4. d. Complete the activity with correct and/or incorrect entries. e. 71 Step 6. Complete the assignment. a. Select Close from the File menu. b. Read the message box that appears and click Yes. The document closes and the Navigation Screen displays. The My Work folder is selected. When a student completes an assignment, the document moves to a Completed Assignment folder. The student has no access to this folder. Only administrators and teachers can view the document (from the navigation screen, select My Work \ All Users \ Student user name \ Completed Assignments). When a student saves a document that was not assigned, the document is saved in the My Work folder. c. Click the Sign Out button to return to the Sign In screen. Next, you will sign in as a teacher and generate a report for this completed assignment. Note Lesson IX: Using Teacher Options 69
72 Step 7. Generate a student report. a. Enter your user name in the Sign In box and click OK. Since you are a teacher, you must also enter your password. If you are notified about any completed assignments, click OK. b. Click the Teacher Options... button. The Teacher Options dialog box displays. c. Select a class (e.g., Language Arts) from the Classes and User s category drop-down list box. d. Select a student s name (e.g., Brown, Lisa) from the users list box. e. Click the Reports... button.
