5 1. Continued What is gettyimages.com? The film page. The film page helps you to navigate the whole of Getty Images film resources as well as find out about the latest footage. The film page is divided into four main sections. From left to right: New footage. This previews the latest footage, showreels and CD titles. The rights-managed collections. The royalty-free collections. The search box. Please select Quick film search to start the search engine. Note: You don t have to go through the Getty Images homepage; you can go straight to film by entering gettyimages.com/film from your browser or by bookmarking the page

6 2. How do I search for clips? Using Quick film search you can find what you re looking for from any or all of the 11 collections. Using Quick film search. Our footage is shot by some of the world s most innovative directors and cinematographers. It features in all styles of production from big-screen blockbusters to small laptop presentations, via commercials, pop promos and motion graphic design. What is the difference between royalty-free and rights-managed? Type in a word that best describes the content of the footage you want to find. You can search by keywords in one of five different languages, US English, UK English, French, German and Spanish. For now please type sunrise. Note: Descriptive words are called keywords. Rights-managed. These collections are commercial quality and are licensed for specific use. Please contact us through the site or by phone to discuss your specific needs and the licencing options. Royalty-free. These collections contain clips that are available to purchase either online or from CD for a one-off fee, and can be used when, where and as often as you want. Select one or both groups

7 2. Continued Using Quick film search. 2. Continued Using Search within results. You can specify which individual collections you want to search and the style of the footage you re looking for. You ve now got a list of clips to view. You can watch each of them by selecting the play icon. If there are too many clips that fall outside of what you re looking for, you may want to refine your search. Select Search within results from the search engine. Note: Sometimes browsing the collections throws up unexpected ideas. For now, please select Search within results and type clouds

8 2. Continued Using Search within results. You can see every detail in the clip because the default size for all clips is 480x360 pixel resolution. Having a larger and clearer viewing image means that clips can be downloaded for use straight away in rough-cuts to save time. The clarity of the preview clip means there ll be no nasty surprises and you can purchase and download broadcast-quality clips with confidence (royalty-free only). You can begin to use the clip immediately by following the on-screen instructions. You can also view clip information from this screen (this functionality is covered in more detail in the What information is available about the clips? section of this manual). Note: Use Search within results as many times as you need to find what you want

9 3. What are the different ways to browse? There are a number of tools within the search engine to help you. Keywords Wildcard characters Clip numbers Keywords, which we ve used before in Quick film search, are grouped into three categories: subjects, technical and concept. These keywords enable you to describe the type of clip you re looking for and can be combined to create sophisticated search criteria to save time and help you find what you need. In order to save time while searching, you can use wildcard characters (*). These are useful when you re unsure of the spelling, a name or a specific word. They also provide a useful shorthand if you don t want to type the whole word. If you know the number of the clip you want, you can go straight to it by entering the number in the search box. Even if you don t know the exact number of the clip you want you can use a wildcard search to find a range of clip numbers. The following pages give examples of how to combine different keywords to help find the right clip. For example, if you enter 567* your search will bring up every image whose number begins with 567. In this case it would be through to

10 3. Continued Subject keywords describe the content of the clip. For example: Nouns: car, men, frog Adjectives: rusty, grumpy, empty Verbs: driving, crying, jumping Ages: baby, teenager, adult Places: Paris, London or more specifically Times Square or Lake Tahoe Subject keywords can be combined to produce search results. For example: airplane and cockpit and pilot not men

11 3. Continued Technical keywords describe the attributes of the film clip as a graphic element. For example: Color: color image, black and white, sepia toned, infrared Specific colors: blue, green, red, beige, gold, silver etc. Other technical keywords: close-up, wide shot, antenna, blurred motion, soft focus, digitally generated image Technical keywords can be combined with subject keywords. For example: slow motion and medium shot and underwater

12 3. Continued Concept keywords are ideas or notions that describe the essence or underlying message of the film clip. For example: communication, challenge, teamwork Many clips are assigned more than one concept. For example: beginnings and freedom Note: Concept keywords can be combined with subject keywords as well as technical keywords to further refine your search

13 3. Continued Combining keywords. The different type of keywords (subject, technical and concept) can be combined to narrow or widen your search using and, not, or. For example: Asia and slow motion and horse or dust not car Note: commas act as or not and

14 4. If I know what I want, how do I find it quickly? You can find what you re looking for right away by using the advanced film search option from the film page. All the tools that you ve used in Search within results are available within advanced film search, including which collections you search and the style of clips you search. It s also possible to save time in the future by storing your search settings. You can do this by selecting Set search preferences

15 5. What information is available about the clips? Once you ve got your search results, you can navigate using the various icons. This takes you to the clip details page where you can view the selected clip and clip details. To purchase royalty-free clips and rights-managed nonwatermarked preview files. This icon adds a clip to your clipbin. To order the CD collection that the clip has come from. This allows you to play the selected clip

16 5. Continued The clip details page helps to order clip information and manage the way you organize your clips and offers you various options. Improve your pitch work. Once you ve found the clips you re looking for you can download nonwatermarked preview files instantly and express your ideas clearly. From this screen you can view the clip, add the clip to your clipbin, purchase the clip (if RF) and search for similar clips. The clip details page displays a thumbnail storyboard of the clip along with shot details including length, speed, color, era, file format and release information

17 6. How can I save my clips? Registering with gettyimages.com/film has several advantages that help workflow and communication across a project. These advantages are organized around the function of the clipbin. Clipbins allow you to organize the clips you are planning to use. You can also purchase directly from the clipbin. Clipbins allow you to store, annotate and sets of film clips to colleagues and clients. It s also possible for several people to remote view clipbins, allowing for real-time collaboration from anywhere in the world. Registration allows you to submit requests or preview tapes as well as get quotes for the rightsmanaged footage in your clipbin

18 7. How can I purchase my clips? gettyimages.com helps you to meet deadlines and save money by improving the way clips are ordered and delivered online. There are two different purchase paths depending on whether the clips are royalty-free or rights-managed. Purchasing royalty-free clips Royalty-free broadcast-quality clips can be purchased online, downloaded to your desktop and used when, where and as often as you like. To purchase an RF clip, select the shopping cart icon next to the chosen clip. This will send your selection through to My order view at the bottom of the screen if you have already signed in, which, like the clipbin, lists the clips you ve selected. From My order view there is a four-step purchase process. Select Continue with purchase. Purchasing royalty-free clips. Page one. This page presents a more detailed view of My order view. The clips you have selected are listed along with the costs for the different resolution sizes. It is also possible to purchase the CD titles these clips come from. Select the resolution size you want and then select Continue purchasing at the bottom of the screen

This page offers a final purchase summary of the clips and their cost. Again you have the opportunity to step back through the process by clicking Edit your order. You can select a payment method depending on whether you re paying on a credit card or by terms account, which can be opened by calling your nearest Getty Images office. To help you track your purchase(s) there is a Reference Information section. Note: It s possible to go back to the previous screen to edit your purchase. Click Edit your order. This page also carries the licencing agreement. This has to be accepted in order for you to proceed to the final download page. Once you are satisfied with the terms of the licencing agreement and have selected the acceptance box, please select Complete purchase. Once you re satisfied that all the information is correct, select Continue purchasing

The rights-managed collections are made up of commercialquality clips that benefit from a higher degree of exclusivity. As such, the licence for these clips is based on specific usage. Click and hold on the link above the thumbnail image to save the clip to your computer, or follow the instructions from the Download help section on the left of the screen. To purchase these clips select Pricing below the relevant clip on the search results page. The popup box that appears gives four options explained on the next page. Once the clip has been downloaded you can continue to search the collections by selecting Continue searching. If you would rather download it later, you can return to the site within 30 days of purchase and find the clip in previous purchases under My Account

21 7. Continued To order a preview tape, the final clip or enquire about pricing please select contact us or submit a request. To purchase and download nonwatermarked preview files select Add to order. 7. Continued Film request page. From this page you can order preview tapes for rights-managed clips as well as request help from a Getty Images researcher. Contact us lists the relevant telephone numbers to contact a Getty Images representative who can give you personalized advice and information. Additionally, if you do not require an immediate response, there is an request form for you to complete. Submit a request takes you through to the film request page (This page is also available from the film homepage and the search results page). Pressed for time? We re here to help. A Getty Images researcher can find exactly what you are looking for. Nonwatermarked preview files. Downloading nonwatermarked preview files of rights-managed clips straight to your desktop means that you can save time. You re in control of what you re looking for, you don t have to draw up lists of tapes to be compiled and you can begin working immediately. To purchase nonwatermarked preview files select Add to order from the right-hand box. This will send your selection to My order view at the bottom of the screen. From here the purchase path is the same as with royalty-free clips (pages 31-33)
