2 COURSE SYLLABUS WEB PAGE CONSTRUCTION ITSC 1091 Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This is an introductory level, hands-on course designed to introduce a variety of techniques required for developing a basic Web page for your business. Specific topics include: defining HTML; selecting a service provider; deciding whether to design your own Web page or hire someone else to do it; using video and audio; designing graphics; and marketing your Web page. COURSE OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the World Wide Web, the Internet, and software used to create pages for the Web. GOALS: Students will learn about history and background of the Internet Students will learn how to design a Web Site Students will write HTML code to create Web Page Students will learn about browsers and their special features LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will demonstrate mastery of these objectives by successfully completing all hands-on labs and tutorials. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: Identify Computer Techniques for developing web pages Describe what the Internet is and what the World Wide Web is Identify the hardware for the Web Use Page Layout Tools to design a web page Design a Web Site Identify Browser specific features Import and use Graphics on the Web Add Sound and Video to web site Describe Shockwave and Java as used for web sites Use Tables for layouts on a web site Map a Graphic Use Scripting for a Web site Create a Web Page PREREQUISITE: Familiarity with computers. 2

Student will complete hands-on, in-class assignments and tutorials. ATTENDANCE: To fully benefit from the class, students are expected to attend all classes. REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Units, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time Complete the course lab demonstrating 80% mastery of course concepts or equivalent skills demonstration to instructor. OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION: Students are encouraged to ask questions and request clarification or guidance as needed during class. A question and answer period is always provided. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION: Topics relevant to future employment and career exploration opportunities will be presented to the students, including certification and degree prospects. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION: Students are informed of instructional aids and resources, including books, other publications, and web sites relevant to the course. SPEAKER FORUM: 3

6 Student Evaluation The instructor will evaluate the student s work created using the on-line tutorial Students will create a home page to be critiqued by the instructor. Below is an example. Volcano Web In this lesson you will use the Internet to research information on volcanoes and then write a report on your results. Introduction A volcano is a location where magma, or hot melted rock from within a planet, reaches the surface. It may happen violently, in a massive supersonic explosion, or more quietly, as a sticky, slow lava flow. Volcanoes have been a part of earth's history long before humans. Compare the history of human beings, a few million years in the making, to that of the Earth, over four billion years in the making. Volcano Terminology The study of volcanoes, or Volcanology, includes many odd terms. How many do you know? caldera vesicularity pahoehoe rheology 6

7 lahar Volcanic Places in the USA Listed below are two places in the United States that are considered "active" volcanic areas. Mount St Helens On May 18, 1980, after a long period of rest, this quiet mountain in Washington provided detailed observations on the mechanics of highly explosive eruptions. Long Valley Volcanic Places on Mars Research Project Your mission is to find information and report on a volcano, other than the ones listed above, that has erupted in the last 100 years. Your reports must include: 1. Type of volcano 2. Geographic location 3. Name, distance, and population of nearest major city 4. Dates of most recent and most destructive eruptions. 5. Other events associated with the recent eruptions (earthquakes, floods, mudslides, etc) Then, write a one page description on the major hazards to humans in the vicinity of this volcano. Speculate on what you would do if you were in charge of minimizing the risk to the population. References 7
