1 New York City College of Technology The City University of New York Department of Communication Design COMD 3527 Advanced Typography Course Description: Sensibility toward design and type is intensely explored. Exercises challenge creativity and visual aesthetics with emphasis on type. Typographical assignments are presented through themed projects. Layouts vary greatly from one-page to multiple-page problems. Exercises are geared to develop sensitivity to the integration of typography and with a variety of visual imagery. Page publication applications such as QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator are used. Advanced exercises in font management and file preparation. 2 cl hr, 2 lab hrs, 3 cr Prerequisites: COMD 2427; corequisite:, COMD 1162 Course Objectives: INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES For the successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Design and execute concepts such as typographical visual hierarchies within a layout. Design and execute concepts of complex typographical grids that use multiple column layouts. ASSESSMENT Evaluation methods and criteria in classroom and laboratory assignments. in classroom and laboratory assignments. 1
2 Design and execute advanced creative typographical problems such as newsletters and book design. Design multiple layout page problems and integrate creative and production components such as links, master pages, tabs, style sheets and initial caps. Utilize relationships among font, point size and tracking, leading and kerning and runarounds. in classroom and laboratory assignments. through book projects with master pages, links, style sheets with exercises in specific typographical problems such as drop caps, raised caps, tracking, kerning, leading, alignment and other typographical elements Student will demonstrate competency in integrating specified typographic elements. General Education Outcome covered: Thinking Critically The student will demonstrate the ability to evaluate evidence and apply reasoning to make valid inferences. Social Interaction The student will demonstrate an understanding of professional ethics. Lifelong Learning The student will demonstrate an awareness of resources for continued lifelong learning. How the outcome is assessed: Evaluate through class critique to determine how well students were able to advance their project concepts by applying evidence and using logic to make decisions. Evaluate through class discussion and written tests if students have developed a sensitivity and awareness of professional ethics. Only two absences may be allowed. After two absences, a student may be withdrawn because of unsatisfactory attendance (code WU). Students arriving after the roll is taken will be marked late. Students may be notified at the earliest opportunity in class after they have been absent or late. After being absent two times or equivalent (2 lateness = 1 absence), a student may be asked to withdraw from the class (code W before the College drop deadline, 4/9/08) or may be withdrawn from the class (code WU). Academic Integrity Standards: You are responsible for reading, understanding and abiding by the NYC College of Technology Student Handbook, Student Rights & Responsibilities, section Academic Integrity Standards. Academic dishonesty of any type, including cheating and plagiarism is unacceptable. "Cheating" is misrepresenting another student's efforts/work as your own. "Plagiarism" is the representation of another person's work, words or concepts as your own. Grading: 3

This report will have an 8 column format of financial information (1 text box) Bring to class 2 newspaper pages Draw their corresponding grid Finish tab projectdue next week 3 Newspaper Grid Newspaper specs Looking at newspaper design: A simple but saturated grid Newspaper project specs (size, margins, file preparation, text,photos) Bring quote related to book project 2 newspapers pages due following given specs 4 Themed Book Part 1 Typography problems caused by our choices of fonts, alignment and styles must be fixed. Alignment (FL, FR, C, J, FJ) Raised Caps Drop Caps Leading Book specs: 15 page-single sided printing For next class: Exe: 1 to 7 Instructor provides text and specs for first 7 typographical problems. Students must solve these problems while presented with very defined and tight 4
