Life on the Edge: Counting Weird Things on the Web International Software Measurement & Analysis Conference Las Vegas, Nevada September 13, 2007 Thomas Cagley (440)
Presentation Objectives The Objectives Are: Introduce participants to counting new scenarios providing a translation path from standard terms to the nomenclature of WEB 2.0 Transfer function point knowledge and skills to the participants Demonstrate Function Point Analysis through real world examples 2
Why Is This Any Different? Blurred Lines 3 Are content creators a class of users? Are programmers and content creators the same? Where do technological reasons start and user recognizable functionality begin? How do the blurred lines impact boundaries? Different Words WEB 2.0 Social Media Mash-ups
What Is... WEB Web 2.0 is the next stage of development leveraging the World Wide Web; technologies such as weblogs, social bookmarking, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds (and other forms of many-to-many publishing), social softwareand online Web services are attributes of WEB 2.0 and imply a significant change in web usage. Social Media Applications - enables people to rendezvous, connect or collaborate through computer-mediated communication. They are often used inside organizations or by communities of practice/interest. (Wikipedia). 4
Example One: Twitter Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows users to send "updates" (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, , the Twitter website, or an application such as Twitterrific. (Wikipedia) 5
User Profile Straight forward set of external inputs, external inquiries and internal logical file 6
Twitter Home Screen EI: Message Entry EQ: Message Display EO: Profile Quantification One screen lots of functionality. 7
CC s Home Page Actions 8
Nudge (I promised a plug to use.. ) Never get in between CC and his music! Nudge Action sends a reminder to tell everyone what you are doing. A nudge is an external output. 9
Twitter Code Applets How would you count code applets that you can embed in other sites? I would suggest that applets not be counted until they are embedded in other applications where they are external inquires, blurring application boundaries (in this case). 10
Boundaries Revisited: Mash Ups Twitter Twittervision (Twitter and Google Maps) In a mashup where does one application start and another start? Twittersearch (Twitter and Search Engine) Twittermap (Twitter and Google Maps) 11
Example Two: Pownce Pownce is a social networking site started by Internet entrepreneur Kevin Rose, Leah Culver, Daniel Burka, and Shawn Allen. Pownce is centered around sharing messages, files, events, and links with already established friends. (Wikipedia) 12
Main Pownce Web Page EIs: Message Entry (or other things) EQ: Message Display 13
Pownce Search EQ: Search and Results EI: Add Action What would the ILF(s) be for these transactions? 14
Pownce Invitation The goal of an invitation is to send a message and invitation code to a friend with a message. An invitation is a... 15
Pownce: The Desktop Application EO: Send a Message EO: Send a File EO: Send a link EO: Send a Event EQ: One EQ for the list of messages. 16
Example Three: Digg Digg is a community-based popularity website with an emphasis on technology and science articles, recently expanding to a broader range of categories such as politics and entertainment. It combines social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control. (Wikipedia) 17
Digg Main Web Page One or Two External EQ: Report of recommendations from table 18
Revisiting Invitations The intent of invitations is to send information across the boundary of the application. 19
I Am So Lonely! What is the ad? EQ: Search EQ: Second Search (Results, input implied) 20
Example Four: Craigslist Craigslist is a centralized network of online urban communities, featuring free classified advertisements (with jobs, internships, housing, personals, for sale/barter/wanted, services, community, gigs, resume, and pets categories) and forums sorted by various topics. (Wikipedia) 21
Craigslist Home Page Doesn t this feel like counting a newspaper? Lots of navigation! The question is whether the list is a dynamic reflection of the Craigslist databases. 22
Lists Of Posts And Responses Output side of an EQ Is this a separate EQ or a filter on the existing? 23
Drilling Down Reflection of different transactions EQ: Text of a joke. 24
Mailing A Joke EO: Message and the text of a joke. Would this reflect a a unique EQ or is it part of the EO? 25
List of Topics (and number of messages...) 26 EO: Number of Messages.
Creating A Posting Multiple page EI with aspects of an EO required to create a posting. Generated and stored if validated. 27
Second Life 28 Online Virtual World 3D Multiplayer Metaverses: Independence Flexibility Building & scripting aspects E-economy Businesses and residents exchange virtual Linden Dollar into the U.S. Dollar Buying and Selling: Land, renting shops to sell clothing, casinos, and skins Conferences: Organizations and educational establishments have found the environment offers a cost-effective alternative to other chat or video options
External Input Note Cards Accepting a note card in Second Life. 29
External Outputs Maps Map includes counts of people currently at a location. 30
EO - Presentations In SL chat is archived and can be retrieved. 31
External Inquiries Data is retrieved, many times the input side of the EQ is not obvious. EQ Environment and Names 32
What Kind Of Transactions... 33
A Little More Fun 34
General Systems Characteristics 1. Data Communication 2. Distributed Data Processing 3. Performance 4. Heavily Used Configuration 5. Transaction Rate 6. Online Data Entry 7. End-User Efficiency 8. On-Line Update 9. Complex Processing 10. Reusability 11. Installation Ease 12. Operational Ease 13. Multiple Sites 14. Facilitate Change WEB 2.0 are typically highly distributed, highly redundant applications. Web 2.0 Influence 35
Why Some GSCs More Sensitive Distributed Data Processing Most WEB 2.0 applications are highly distributed. Example Linden Labs changes processing based on sign in patterns. Heavily Used Configuration Lots of dedicated possessors, the means to use the processors and a design to support it. Complex Processing Typically begin with high logical processing and complex processing to handle multiple input/output possibilities. Reusability When WEB 2.0 apps are used as components of a mash up this GSC will be at least a 3. 36
On The Question Of GSCs... Do they matter? If you are developing on top of an application? Inside another application? Mashing up applications? (Consider the VAF = 1) Are there conditions where they would matter? Extending an application 37
The More Things Change... Questions? Answers? Comments Thomas Cagley (440)
