1 Foundation Directory Online (FDO) Search Guide Extensive program details for 1,500+ leading foundations; detailed application guidelines for 7,200+ foundations; and sponsoring company information for corporate givers. This service also includes a searchable file of more than half a million grants. The Trustees, Officers, and Donors search field and its corresponding index allow users to search among over 350,000 trustee, officer and donor names. FDO is accessible through the Syracuse University library website through a subscription. Access 1) Navigate to library.syr.edu 2) On the homepage click Databases in the Find column underneath the summon search bar. 3) If you are on a campus computer, it will take you straight to the database search results (below). If you are off campus, the website will prompt you to sign in via EZ-Proxy remote access with your NetID and password.

2 4) Once you are on the database search page, type foundation into the search bar. FDO will be the only database your search pulls up. Click on the title to go directly to the webpage. Search Basic Power Search If you utilize the Power Search on the homepage, FDO will pull up sources relevant to your search words from its nine databases (Grantmakers, Grants, Companies, 990s, News, RFPs, PubHub, Nonprofit Literature, and Jobs). Keyword Searching Applicable to keyword search fields, including the Power Search field, Keyword (or text) Searching is used to search for words or phrases appearing across the entire text of a particular database or, when using the Power Search tool, across the entire text of all databases simultaneously. While index and range searches target particular data fields, keyword searches are much broader. Keyword Searching is useful when searching for records containing very specific words or phrases not included in the indexes or when you don't want to limit your search to a particular data field It is recommended to narrow your search by searching within Grantmaker and/or Grants in order to be more successful (next page).

3 Grantmaker Click Search Grantmakers Index Searching To conduct an index search, open an index by: 1. Clicking on a View Index link located beneath a search field title on the search screen. 2. Clicking on an index entry automatically inserts it into the corresponding search field. For example, the image below uses the Support Strategy index to find and enter Research. Tip: It is possible to enter concurrent indexes in the various categories to narrow the search. Grantmaker Search Results Once you have entered your desired search terms or indexes, the results will show as follows. At this point, FDO gives you the option of saving, printing, or exporting your list of results.

4 1) Click the box to select all of the searches listed 2) Click Print/Save Records to see the full information from the first 100 Grantmakers. TIP: For a full list of Grantmakers click Export List or Save/Print List, This list will not contain full profile information. The Save Search option does not work for our institutional subscription. Grantmaker Profile When you click on a Grantmaker name, the profile will give you information on each foundation, organization, or company whose work aligns with your search terms. FDO also lets you see where the organization has given the most by clicking Map Grants, as well as the allocation of their grant money by recipient type and primary subject by clicking Chart Grants.

5 Grants Searching A search within Grants gives you the same options as searching within Grantmakers and allows you to use index searching in the same way. Grant search results will pull up a list of recipients.

6 Grant Profiles When you click on a Recipient Name, the profile will give you information on each recipient, the type of support and amount received. FDO also links directly to the Grantmaker Profile by clicking on the Grantmaker tab above Grant Details. Searching Tips: 1) Boolean Searching- Applicable to indexed search fields and keyword search fields, including the Power Search field, Boolean Searching is used to search for multiple index entries, words, or phrases in various ways, broadening, narrowing, or limiting your search. To conduct a Boolean search, include a Boolean operator in your search. Four Boolean operators can be incorporated into a search: AND, OR, NOT, and NEAR. Tip: In keyword search fields, including the Power Search field, Boolean operators must be typed in ALL CAPS. This is not necessary in indexed search fields. The OR Operator Including OR between index entries, words, or phrases broadens a search, retrieving results containing any of the index entries selected or words or phrases typed. For example, typing arts OR culture into the Keyword Search field on the Search Grantmakers Screen will retrieve grantmaker records containing either "arts" or "culture" or both. The AND Operator Including AND between index entries, words, or phrases narrows a search, retrieving results containing all of the index entries selected or words or phrases typed. For example, typing arts AND culture into the Keyword Search field on the Search Grantmakers Screen will retrieve grantmaker records containing both "arts" and "culture."

7 The NOT Operator Including NOT before an index entry, word, or phrase limits a search, excluding results containing the index entry selected or word or phrase typed after the "not" operator. For example, typing arts NOT culture into the Keyword Search field on the Search Grantmakers Screen will retrieve grantmaker records containing "arts" and exclude grantmaker records containing "culture." The NEAR Operator Including NEAR/n between two index entries, words, or phrases narrows an "and" operator search, retrieving results containing both of the index entries selected or words or phrases typed but only if they appear within a specific proximity to one another. The "n" should be a numerical value indicating the maximum number of words that should appear between two index entries, words, or phrases. For example, typing arts NEAR/3 culture into the Keyword Search field on the Search Grantmakers Screen will retrieve grantmaker records containing both "arts" and "culture" but only if they appear no more than three words away from one another. 2) Wildcard Searching- Applicable to indexed search fields and keyword search fields, including the Power Search field, Wildcard Searching is used to search for variations of index entries, words, or phrases, broadening your search. To conduct a wildcard search, modify an index entry, word, or phrase to include a wildcard character in your search. Two wildcard characters can be incorporated into a search: the asterisk, "*," and the question mark, "?." The Asterisk Modifying an index entry, word, or phrase to include an asterisk representing any number of letters at the beginning or at the end broadens a search, retrieving results containing variations of the index entry selected or word or phrase typed based on the position of the asterisk. For example, typing art* into the Keyword Search field on the Search Grantmakers Screen will retrieve grantmaker records containing "art," "arts," "artists," and even "Arthur." Typing *art will retrieve grantmaker records containing words like "start," "heart," and "part." The Question Mark Modifying an index entry, word, or phrase to include a question mark representing any single letter or a series of question marks representing any series of letters at the beginning, at the end, or anywhere in between broadens a search, retrieving results containing variations of the index entry selected or word or phrase typed based on the position of the question mark(s). For example, typing wom?n into the Keyword Search field on the Search Grantmakers Screen will retrieve grantmaker records containing "women" and "woman." Typing psych????y will retrieve grantmaker records containing "psychology" or "psychiatry." 3) Guided Searching- Located on the left side of search results screens, the guided search options enable you to broaden or narrow your search directly from the search results screen. The options provided are relevant to your current search criteria and your current search results.

8 To broaden your results, unselect a check box associated with your current search criteria. For example, unselecting the check box associated with a Fields of Interest term you used to construct your search strategy will broaden your results to include records that contain any Fields of Interest term. To narrow your results, click on an index entry under any category in the Narrow Your Results area. For example, clicking on an index entry under Fields of Interest in the Narrow Your Results area will narrow your results to display only the subset of records containing that particular Fields of Interest index entry.
