1 LEXIS-NEXIS ACADEMIC TUTORIAL Hot Tips for retrieving entertainment news in Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter from Lexis-Nexis Academic! Lexis-Nexis Academic offers full-text information from over 5,600 news, business, legal, medical, and reference sources. Hard-to-find broadcast transcripts from major television and radio networks, outstanding newswires and newspaper sources like The New York Times (dating back to 1980), and more than 400 magazines and journals create onestop shopping for the latest film and television industry news. Specialized entertainment sources include Daily Variety, Variety (weekly international publication), Variety New York Entertainment Town Supplement (irregular publication), and The Hollywood Reporter (daily publication). Leatherby Libraries subscribe to the print versions of The Hollywood Reporter and Variety (weekly international publication), located in the Periodicals section on the first floor of the library. This tutorial focuses on tips for retrieving entertainment news from Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter from Lexis-Nexis Academic.
NAVIGATING TO LEXIS-NEXIS ACADEMIC DATABASE 2 On the home page of Chapman University, go to QuickLinks and select Libraries from the drop-down menu, and then click link to Leatherby Libraries or go to On the Leatherby Libraries home page, click FIND ARTICLES and scroll the alphabetical list of databases to Lexis-Nexis Academic; click the link to open the database.
SCROLL TO LEXIS-NEXIS ACADEMIC 3 Tip If you click FIND BY SUBJECT on the Leatherby Libraries home page and select Film/Media Arts, you will be taken to various other database choices and guides in your subject area, including Lexis-Nexis Academic.
4 SOURCE INFORMATION Daily Variety Once in Lexis-Nexis Academic, click SOURCES located on the top navigation bar, type Daily Variety, click FIND TITLE, and then click ABOUT THIS TITLE to retrieve information about its content and frequency, including: online availability is same day (some information may be on a load-date lag, that is, the date that Lexis-Nexis loads the information into the database may be later than the actual date of publication); coverage is from April 27, 1992; and
5 exclusions are Nielsen rating charts, Entertainment Data, Inc. movie gross charts, Index Inside box, Showbiz stock boxes, and stock transaction charts. You will be able to retrieve some box office information. More about that later. Tip You can view Box Office Top Ten (Movies) and Top Shows/Networks (TV) on the home page of for free. See for free access to Box Office Charts. Both Web sites provide some access to entertainment information for non-subscribers. The Hollywood Reporter SOURCE INFORMATION ABOUT HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
6 Go back to SOURCES, and type Hollywood Reporter to retrieve information about the content and frequency of this title, including that its online availability is within 1 week of publication; usually online within 5 days of date of publication; coverage is from May 15, 1991 (excluding December 4, 5, 10, 11, 17, & 18, 1991 and August 2, 1999); and exclusions are Advertisements/Classified, Obituary Columns, Calendars, Advisories, Story Schedules, George Christy Column, Births, Weddings, People on the Move, Stock Market, Charts, Stories Originating Wholly or in Part from a Wire Service, Letters to the Editor, In Production Charts, and additional Special Issue Sections from Domestic and International Editions.
7 GENERAL SEARCH TIPS FOR DAILY VARIETY AND HOLLYWOOD REPORTER SEARCH VARIETY FOR BOX OFFICE INFORMATION To search either or both publications, go to the Lexis-Nexis Academic home page and click the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab. 1. STEP ONE: Select a news category Select ARTS AND SPORTS NEWS from the drop-down menu. 2. STEP TWO: Select a news source Select ENTERTAINMENT NEWS from the drop-down menu. Or select BOOK, MOVIE, MUSIC & PLAY REVIEWS for reviews. 3. STEP THREE: Enter search terms Type search terms.
o Type box office to retrieve box office information. 8 Reminder: You do not need to place terms in quotations. Daily Variety reports a full Film Box Office Weekend Wrap on Tuesdays; online availability is usually by Wednesday or Thursday. o Type reviews to retrieve film/tv reviews. o Type news to retrieve film/tv news articles. o Type obituaries to retrieve obituaries in Daily Variety. 4. STEP FOUR: Narrow to a specific date range Select date from drop-down menu or type date range. o Click TIPS link to the right of GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab for date range formats. 5. STEP FIVE: Search this publication title(s) Type Daily Variety OR Hollywood Reporter or type either title to retrieve information from one of the publications. o Reminder: If you initiate search by browsing for publications through the SOURCES link on the top navigation bar, you can click the SEARCH THIS TITLE link. You will be taken to the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab. You can either keep the default BOOK, MOVIE, MUSIC, & PLAY REVIEWS under STEP TWO or select ENTERTAINMENT NEWS in the drop-down menu to complete your search. Remember to input search terms under STEP THREE.
9 Hint: If you go back to STEP TWO under GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab and click link to SOURCE LIST (located to the right of the drop-down menu), you will find a variety of entertainment news publications to add to your search, including Billboard, Television Week, and other fun celebrity tabloid publications like Daily News (New York). You may select up to five. 6. STEP SIX: Click SEARCH to submit your search and retrieve results. Your results will be listed in a document list. RESULTS IN DOCUMENT LIST FORMAT
o You can select other display formats such as 10 KWIC (Key Words In Context), showing each of your search terms surrounded by a window of text of approximately 20 words of text. The KWIC format helps you quickly determine whether or not a document applies to your research topic. EXPANDED LIST displays document list with search term in context surrounded by approximately five words. RESULTS IN EXPANDED LIST FORMAT o You can sort results by Date or Relevance. The default sort is by date.
PRINT OR INFORMATION 11 PRINT CITATIONS You can print or your list of citations or open up a document to print or . Tag the boxes to the left of citations in DOCUMENT LIST and click PRINT or (located on the top right) to print or citations. After you open a document, you can click PRINT or to do the same with the full text document.
SEARCH STATEGIES 12 You can enter specific search terms, including industry names and movie titles (e.g., Casablanca, Steven Spielberg). After you retrieve your results, you can FOCUS/SEARCH WITHIN THE RESULTS. For example, after retrieving results based on search Steven Spielberg, you can type in the FOCUS box (located near top left side of screen): Jaws to easily retrieve results based on this narrower search. Hint: There may be a load-date lag to hot industry news stories. If you find a story of interest on or and cannot access the full story, perform a QUICK NEWS SEARCH on the home page of Lexis-Nexis Academic, using key search terms from the story to retrieve results from other news sources. You can select FULL TEXT from drop-down menu under STEP THREE from GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab to search terms that you believe may appear in the text of the article and not in the headline or lead paragraph(s). If you go back and view About this Title (Daily Variety) from SOURCES (located on the top navigation bar), you will see a list of commonly used industry terms, such as BIZ (business), B.O. (box office), SKED (schedule), and others to use in your search strategies.
13 o For example, you can type B.O. or box office. Be sure to change the logical operator from the default AND to OR to retrieve articles with either B.O. or Box Office in HEADLINE, LEAD PARAGRAPH(S), TERMS under STEP THREE from the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab. Tip This industry jargon will work searching The Hollywood Reporter. If you click HOW DO I? on the top navigation bar, you will find other helpful general search tips. PROXIMITY AND WILDCARD SEARCHES You can perform proximity searches with your terms under STEP THREE from the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab. Instead of selecting AND or OR, you can use the drop-down menu to select W/5 (within 5 words on either side of term), W/10 (within 10 words on either side of term), W/25 (within 25 words on either side of term), W/S (within same sentence), W/P (within same paragraph). You can use wildcard symbols such as the exclamation mark (!) to truncate a search word to find multiple meanings, such as PROD! to find produce or production, etc. You can use the asterisk (*) to replace a letter or letters in a word. You can use more than one * in a word, and you can use it anywhere in a word except for the first letter, such as WOM*N to retrieve WOMAN or WOMEN.
SMARTINDEXING: SUBJECT SEARCHING 14 Lexis-Nexis Academic uses SmartIndexing to search relevant subject terms. Try typing subject (television ratings) under STEP THREE from the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab and select FULL TEXT from the drop-down menu. You can view relevant percentages on your subject search in KWIC or EXPANDED LIST formats. SUBJECT SEARCH DOCUMENT ON TELEVISION RATINGS IN KWIC FORMAT To see a list of film and television subject terms, go to and click link to Categorized List of Topics in Finding Index Terms box, scroll to Media, Publishing & Entertainment to see terms, including TELEVISION RATINGS, CELEBRITIES, and MOVIE INDUSTRY.
15 Hint: If you type TELEVISION RATINGS under STEP THREE from the GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab and select HEADLINE, LEAD PARAGRAPH(S), TERMS from the drop-down menu, you will retrieve the same subject search results! SEARCH USING SMARTINDEXING SUBJECT TERMS Tip It may be more effective and efficient to search broadly with your first search before narrowing your results with proximity operators, wildcards, or SmartIndexing.
16 OTHER HELPFUL SEARCHES: Lexis-Nexis is easy to use to find film and television company information. For example, you can search for information about Warner Bros. by clicking BUSINESS under ACADEMIC SEARCH FORMS (located to the left from the Lexis-Nexis Academic home page or GUIDED NEWS SEARCH Tab). ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY INFORMATION Click COMPANY PROFILES and type Warner Bros. in search box next to COMPANY NAME. Instead of COMPANY NAME, you can use the drop-down menu to search by SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) or TICKER SYMBOL,
17 if you know it. You can select from either Hoover s or Standard & Poor s, among other sources, to view information about company financials or executives or competitors. You can click the QUICK NEWS SEARCH tab and type the company name in the COMPANY INFORMATION search box, provided as an alternative method to search company information. QUICK NEWS SEARCH FOR COMPANY INFORMATION Tip Search for info on production companies and agencies, too.
18 If you click REFERENCE under ACADEMIC SEARCH FORMS, you can quickly search BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION on executives, such as Barry M. Meyer, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Tip Open up the BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION search date to all available dates to retrieve the greatest number of results on hard-to-find executive biographical information.
If you need assistance, please visit the Reference Desk in the Leatherby Libraries or 19 call Or with questions, or if you discover any other short cuts and more effective and efficient search strategies to share. Happy searching!
