1 Overview: Google Search a support Web 2.0 tool in alignment with college Online & Hybrid initiative, this free-access Search Engine allows the user to enter endless search criteria s such as text, images, videos, and much more. 2 1. Open a new Web Browser Such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari or Google Chrome type in the address bar and press enter. 2. The basic page overview of Google is very simple. The quick guide below distinguishes all the elements and tools that you'll find on a Google search results page. Header Search bar Search results Tools & filters Ads Bottom of the page 2 P a g e

Performing a Google search is very simple, just type in a phrase or word of something you would like to search and click on Google Search or press Enter to see a list of related results Google usually auto assumes what you are typing and starts giving keywords and results instantly. 4. The gear icon on the upper right hand corner of your screen allows you modify your search settings. These setting include Filters,Predictions, and number of results you'd like to see per page. 3 P a g e

4 Other features include whether or not to open in the search results in a new browser window or on the same screen, and blocking unwanted results such as Specific Sites. Once you have customized it to your liking Simply Click Save 5. The Advanced Search option allows a user to Search specific items from google, this is easily accessed by clicking on the Gear icon and selecting Advanced Search. Options Include: All these words to search for important words This exact word or phrase put words in quotes Any of these words type OR between all the words you want None of these words place a minus sign before words you don t want Numbers ranging from Put 2 periods between the numbers and add a unit of measure 4 P a g e

5 Narrow Search Options Include: Language search for pages in language you select Region find published pages within a particular region Last Update - find pages updated within the time you specify Site or domain search from one site or one domain Terms appearing search for terms in the whole page, title or web address SafeSearch select explicit content filter o Off allows any information to be viewable o Moderate allows certain information to be viewable o Strict Does not allow any explicit content to be viewable Reading Level find pages at one reading level File type find pages in the format you prefer Usage rights Find pages you are free to use yourself The Advanced Search button allows you to proceed with the search 6. Searching different types of Media is very simple. Click on the type from the list on top of the page enter search criteria and press enter. 5 P a g e

6 7. Google Image search allows you to search for photos, pictures and Images from the web. 8. Search by Image allows you to take an image and search it using Google, the results include details, location and history of image. a. Locate a Picture from your PC or the Internet b. With-in Google Click on Google Images c. In the search bar click on the camera on the right next to the Magnify Glass d. Browse for a photo from here by clicking Upload an image e. Click on Browse or you have the option to drag an image in to the search box next to browse 6 P a g e

9 9. Using the Google Dictionary to get definitions and pronunciations is simple. Type in the word Define: (your word goes here) and then search. By clicking on the speaker you will be able to hear how the word is also pronounced. 9 P a g e

10 10. Searching by file type is very simple, in the search bar type your search followed by :pdf or desired file type and search to find available online files. 11. Google Maps allows you to look up locations and get directions. 10 P a g e
