3 Boolean Primer In order to effectively conduct specific searches it s important to have a good handle on Boolean. The following charts show the operators and modifiers that work with the specific search engines that are covered in CSSR 5.0. Boolean Operators There are three Boolean operators that are commonly utilized at search engines. The chart below details these operators and how they are applied. Boolean operators should be capitalized in general. Some search engines are programmed to understand that OR is a Boolean operator, whereas or is not. Most search engines today are not case sensitive outside of Boolean - meaning that keywords can be input in either uppercase or lowercase. Operator Use Examples AND (A space between two words defaults to the Boolean operator AND on most search engines) OR NOT (Usually represented by a minus sign - ) This operator returns results that contain all of the search terms. This operator returns results that contain either of the search terms. This operator helps to eliminate terms from results. sales marketing (The space between the two words is understood as AND.) These examples will return documents that have both the terms sales and marketing referenced. oncology OR radiology This example will return documents with oncology or radiology or possibly both terms. resume -jobs These examples return resume documents that do not contain reference to jobs. 3

4 Boolean Modifiers In addition to the Boolean operators, there are modifiers that can be used in conjunction with the operators and keywords in a Boolean string. These modifiers help to make the search more powerful and efficient. Modifier Use Example Quotation Marks Parentheses ( ) Wildcard * Define an exact phrase, recognized by all search engines in this class. Defines a subset of a search string. Normally used for OR statements. Used as a placeholder for any unknown or wildcard terms at Google and Ask.com. business development director (manager OR director OR vp) marketing network * engineer Boolean Commands As with any new language, usage improves with practice. Boolean operators are only part of the language that search engines understand. Another key ingredient to a powerful search string is field search commands. Field search commands tell the search engine where to find keywords on a web document. The most relevant and commonly used field search commands are summarized below: COMMAND Use Examples intitle: inurl: site: link: This field search command looks for keywords in the title field of the Web page. The title appears in the HTML source for each Web page, and is not always the title that can be read on the website itself. This field search command looks for keywords in the Web address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of a document. The URL is visible in the browser window on each Web page. XRay command that instructs the search engine to limit results to those coming only from a specified domain. FlipSearch command link: is used at Exalead to bring back results that have a hyperlink to a specific domain. intitle:resume financial analyst In this example, the word resume must be in the title field of every result. The phrase financial analyst must be in each result, but it can be found anywhere within the document. inurl:team tax manager In this example, the word team must be in the URL address of every result. The phrase tax manager must be in each result, but it can be found anywhere within the document. site:linkedin.com link:linkedin.com 4

5 Blogs & Microblogs XRaying Blogs for Talent Many candidates share biographical information through blogs. A great technique to find candidates on blogs is through an XRay of blog publishing platforms. An XRay is a universal technique which works at most search engines. Recruiters can XRay most blog publishing platforms available from LiveJournal to Wordpress. Something unique to blogs are their about me pages. Many times about me or other variations appears in either the title or URL field of a blog page that has more biographical information than the main blog page. Use this knowledge as an advantage by adding some Boolean (intitle: about me OR inurl: about me ). Example Blog XRay: site:domain.com keyword keyword (intitle: about me OR inurl: about me ) Seven Ways to Source Twitter Twitter is one of the most robust social sites online today, and undeniably full of candidates that are just waiting to be contacted. Unique to this particular website is the ability to search using so many different techniques to search Twitter for candidates quickly and effectively. 1. FlipSearch 2. Hashtag Search 3. Twitter Advanced Search 4. Check Followers/Following 5. XRay for Twitter Profiles 6. XRay Tweets 7. XRay for Public Lists on Twitter 5

6 Seven Ways to Source Twitter FlipSearch Example FlipSearch for Twitter: link:twitter.com portfolio (keyword OR keyword) keyword -job -jobs Hashtag Search Search hashtags for conversations on Twitter. Try looking for an industry hashtag such as #PMP. Twitter Advanced Search Use Twitter Advanced Search to locate professionals in specific locations. Check Followers/Following Users must be logged into Twitter to view this information. XRay for Twitter Profiles site:twitter.com joined -intitle:job -intitle:jobs (keyword OR keyword) XRay Tweets site:twitter.com tweets keyword keyword XRay for Public Lists on Twitter site:twitter.com inurl:members keyword keyword Bonus: Control F Press Ctrl F when using a PC to quickly locate a term or phrase on a page. Try Command F on MACs. 6

7 Social Networks Facebook Use Facebook Graph Search to locate People who are not my friends and live in Chicago, Illinois, then further filter the results to only KPMG employees. The new search at Facebook Graph Search should now say KPMG employees who are not my friends and live in Chicago, Illinois. Next, also try a more simplified search for a topic such as UNIX. Try using Facebook Graph Search to look for People who like Unix. Another method for successfully targeting candidate profiles related to Facebook is to conduct a FlipSearch of the site to target pages that are linked to Facebook. SEARCH STRING: link:facebook.com (keyword OR keyword) keyword -job -jobs *Remember that in order to conduct a successful FlipSearch, the search must be conducted at Exalead using the link: command. Google+ Google+ is a great site to source for potential talent. Recruiters can easily XRay this site to view a profile. Add inurl:about to filter results to only about pages on this website. site:plus.google.com inurl:about (keyword OR keyword) Candidates can also be found through a FlipSearch of Google+. Add biographical terms like resume or portfolio and candidate keywords to target specific results. link:plus.google.com (resume OR cv OR vitae OR portfolio ) (keyword OR keyword) -job -jobs Additional Social Networking Sites Use similar techniques to target additional niche or global social networking sites. Look for clues in the title field or URL address to further narrow and clean up results. Example Social Networking Site XRay: site:domain.com keyword (keyword OR keyword) Example Social Networking Site FlipSearch: link:domain.com (resume OR cv OR vitae OR portfolio OR bio) keyword (keyword OR keyword) -job -jobs 7

8 Professional Networking Networks XRaying LinkedIn There are many benefits for recruiters to conduct an XRay of LinkedIn to locate profiles. Using a different medium, such as a search engine, to locate profiles on LinkedIn, offers a recruiter an even playing field to find talent. Unless a user has adjusted their privacy settings, LinkedIn profiles are indexed by search engines. EXAMPLE SEARCH STRING FOR GOOGLE: site:linkedin.com/in ( location * keyword OR location * keyword ) (keyword OR keyword) XRaying Additional Professional Networking Sites Use similar techniques to target other professional networking sites.
