PictureTel LiveManager Release Notes Version July 2, 1998 Overview PictureTel LiveManager 3.1 is a member of PictureTel's LiveLAN family of collaborative computing conferencing products specifically designed for the LAN. LiveManager 3.1 is an H.323 Gatekeeper application that manages PictureTel LiveLAN calls and provides additional functionality to the LiveLAN and LiveGateway products. LiveManager 3.1 is compatible with LiveLAN (versions 3.0 and 3.1) and LiveGateway 3.1 as well as H.323 endpoints and Gatekeepers from other vendors. LiveManager 3.1 is an enhancement of LiveManager 3.0 providing new features and improved interoperability with PictureTel s and third party vendors H.323 products. LiveManager 3.1 includes the following features: Support for Windows NT V4.0 (or later) TCP/IP systems SNMP support for LiveGateway management Call setup protocol support for LiveGateway Bandwidth management (optional) Gateway Sharing Extended Name Resolution Web Enabling Package
New Gateway Console Application Year 2000 Compliance The LiveManager 3.1 Release Notes are organized into the following sections: System and Network Requirements Installing LiveManager Deinstalling LiveManager New Features Restrictions and Recommendations Helpful Hints On-line Documentation Software Components System and Network Requirements You can install LiveManager 3.1 on the following minimum system configurations: Server: Client: You can install LiveManager 3.1 Console and service on a Windows NT 4.0 (or later) machine running TCP/IP Optionally, you can install the LiveManager 3.1 Console on a Windows 95 or NT machine for managing the service remotely LiveManager 3.1 replaces all earlier versions of LiveManager and is required for LiveLAN (versions 3.0 and 3.1) and LiveGateway 3.1 operation. Installing LiveManager 3.1 The installation program "setup.exe" for LiveManager 3.1 is found under the disk1 directory of the installation files. The installation files are found on the distribution CD or in the PictureTel release Web site. If you are installing from the Web site, you must first download and expand the self-extracting installation file. LiveManager files are installed into a \livemanager sub-directory. If you specify an install path which does not end with this sub-directory, it is automatically appended to the path by the install process. The default installation path is: C:\Program Files\PictureTel\LiveManager\ LiveManager Service can be activated only in a Windows NT system (server or workstation). When installing on Windows NT, you have the choice of installing only the Console, or both the Console and the Service components of LiveManager. You may optionally install the Web
enabling package during the install process. The LiveManager Service can be started or stopped using the Windows NT Services Control Panel like any other Windows NT Service. I. Web Enabling Package Install Option Before you can install the Web Enabling Package (WEP) on your NT server or workstation, you must have installed the following two services: Window NT WWW Service -- IIS (Internet Information Service) or Peer Web Service Microsoft Active Server Page -- Found on your Windows NT service pack 3 CD If, during installation, you select to install the WEP and the above two services are not detected, the WEP will not be installed. II. Installation Notes NOTE 1: Attempting to install LiveManager 3.1 after canceling out of the install program may result in an error message stating that there is not enough disk space. Please disregard this message and try re-installing one more time. If the problem continues, try re-booting the machine. NOTE 2: Installing LiveManager 3.1 on a NT server from a drive mapped to a Windows 95 machine will not work if a directory name in the path is greater than 8 characters. If an error message is displayed stating that the setup.exe could not be found, try renaming the directory in question to a new name which has a length of 8 characters or less. Deinstalling LiveManager 3.1 Deinstalling LiveManager 3.1 can be done by selecting the icon labeled "Remove LiveManager 3.1" from the Start menu or by selecting "LiveManager 3.1" from the Add/Remove program in the Control Panel. NOTE: If you wish to keep the configuration, topology and/or calls history files, you must manually copy the files into a new directory, outside of the installation directory, before uninstalling LiveManager. The LiveManager uninstall process will delete all files in the installation directory. You should copy the following files: livemgr.cfg (configuration file)
net_topo.top (network topology file, if it exists) did2tid.pbk (if it exists) calls.log (calls history file - current month) calls_*_*.log (calls history file - previous month(s)) Copy these files back into the installation directory after you re-install LiveManager. New Features Gateway Sharing Extended Name Resolution Web Enabling Package New Gateway Console Application Year 2000 Compliant I. Gateway Sharing Gateway sharing allows endpoints in one LiveManager zone to use a gateway in another LiveManager zone for outward-bound, gateway dialed calls. LiveManager will seek out an available gateway in another zone if there are no available gateways in the local zone. The LiveManagers of all involved zones must be configured to allow sharing of gateways. To begin, in the LiveManager console, click the Gateway Sharing button under the Gateway section: Adding a Gatekeeper You will need to add the name of each LiveManager with shared gateways to the gatekeeper list displayed in the Gatekeeper Information list box. To add a gatekeeper to the Gatekeeper Information list box: 1. Click the Add button. The Add LiveManager Server dialog box is displayed. 2. Enter the gatekeeper s name in the Add LiveManager Server. 3. Click the Enable Gateway Sharing field to enable it (a checkmark is present when it is enabled). 4. Click OK to save your changes. 5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for the other LiveManagers you wish to share. Deleting a Gatekeeper To delete a gatekeeper from the Gatekeeper Information list box, select the gatekeeper and click Delete. Click Yes in the Delete Selection Dialog box. Modifying a Gatekeeper To modify the information for a gatekeeper listed in the Gatekeeper Information list box, select
the gatekeeper and click Modify. Change the information identified in the Modify LiveManager Server dialog box. Click OK. II. Extended Name Resolution Extended Name Resolution is yet another method to resolve an alias to an IP address. This method uses the network s DNS (Dynamic Naming Service) to provide the translation. It allows a user to dial a call using a PC s machine name. Enabling/Disabling Extended Name Resolution 1. Click on the Advanced button in the Call Control section of the LiveManager console.. 2. Click Extended Name Resolution in the Advanced Call Control dialog box. A checkmark indicates the feature is enabled. Click again to disable it. 3. Click OK. III. Web Enabling Package The Web Enabling Package (WEP) provides you with remote Web browser access to certain LiveManager status and statistics files that would normally be viewed through the LiveManager console. You can view the Endpoint List, Events Log, Status Log, and optionally, the Active Connections List and Historical Calls Log. Prior to installing the WEP, you must have installed the following services on your NT workstation or NT server: 1. Internet Information Service (server) OR Peer Web Service (workstation) 2. Microsoft Active Server Page The IIS or Peer Web Service software is found on your NT server/workstation distribution CD. The Active Server Page software is found on your Windows NT service pack 3 CD. The WEP is installed during LiveManager installation. You have the choice of installing all of it, part of it or none of it. If you want to install all options, including access to call information files, select the Web Enabling Package and Call Information checkboxes in the Install Options screen during the installation process. If you want to access only the status files (no call information) deselect the Call Information checkbox. If you do not want to install any of the WEP, deselect the Web Enabling Package checkbox. Note: If the IIS / Peer Web Service or Active Server Page services are not detected during the installation process, the WEP will not be installed. As part of the WEP install process, you will be asked for contact information about the individual designated to administer the LiveManager Service. This information includes the following: Location Contact Person
Phone Number Alias The alias is a name for the LiveManager installation directory. This alias will be used to form the URL of the web site. The default alias for the LiveManager installation directory is "livemgr." After the contact information is entered and installation is successfully completed, you may use the web browser to access certain LiveManager status and statistics files. To use LiveManager's WEP feature, start your web browser and navigate to the following location: Example: name]/[alias]/livemgr.asp You installed LiveManager with the WEP option on host N112H202 and you specified the alias to be "gatekeeper." Your URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is: IV. New LiveGateway Console Application A new LiveGateway console application provides you with remote access to gateway status and partial configuration capability. The LiveGateway console is a separate application which is launched within the LiveManager console. As such, it behaves as any independent application would. Its windows will go to the background when the LiveManager console is selected. They will pop to the foreground when the LiveGateway is selected. Its windows will not move when the LiveManager console is moved. The LiveGateway console will minimize and terminate when the LiveManager console minimizes or terminates. The exception to this behavior occurs when the LiveGateway configuration window is opened. User input is expected so the LiveGateway console remains open until the input is entered or the window is closed. V. Year 2000 Compliant LiveManager has been tested for Year 2000 compliance using a PictureTel developed standard of compliance which is based upon a compilation of various industry proposals. Restrictions and Recommendations I. DHCP Installation
When installing LiveLAN and LiveManager in a DHCP environment, please observe the following guidelines: 1. Install LiveManager in a Windows NT machine whose IP address is static. LiveLAN clients can be installed on machines with dynamic IP addresses. 2. Install LiveGateway boards in machines with static addresses (to control LiveGateway via SNMP, you need to enter its IP address on the console). II. Microsoft ILS Support LiveManager 3.1 can be optionally configured to register its endpoints to a Microsoft ILS server. This enables Microsoft NetMeeting clients to call a LiveLAN terminal by selecting it from the ILS directory. To configure this option: 1. Open the LiveManager Console. 2. Under the Call Control group, press the button labeled Advanced. 3. Check the box labeled Enable ILS Registration. 4. Provide the name of the ILS server. LiveManager updates the call status indicator of endpoints in the ILS server. III. NT Service Packs It is highly recommended that you run the NT system with the latest Service Pack from Microsoft. At the time these Release Notes were written, the latest version was NT Service Pack 3. IV. Multiple LiveManagers On The Same Subnet In the unlikely event that you need to install more than one LiveManager on the same subnet be aware that bandwidth management will not limit Out-Of-Zone calls between LiveLANs on that subnet.you will need to manipulate the subnet descriptor and subnet mask in such a way as to virtually divide the subnet. For example, suppose you install two LiveManagers, LM1 and LM2, on subnet xxx. You describe LM1 s and LM2 s topology as containing segments and *.*.*.* (Out-Of-Zone) with a subnet mask of A LiveLAN may register to either LiveManager. You can "divide" the subnet between the two LiveManagers by describing the topology a little differently. Describe LM1 s topology as containing segments *.*.*.* (OOZ) and with a subnet mask of Describe LM2 s topology as containing segments *.*.*.* (OOZ) and with a subnet mask of Now all LiveLANs with an IP address ending in 128 or higher may register only to LM2 and LiveLANs with IP address ending in 127 or lower may register only to LM1. Calls between LiveLANs on the xxx subnet between the two zones will be correctly managed with respect to bandwidth. V. LiveGateway SNMP Management Console
The LiveGateway SNMP Management Console will not work on a Windows 95 PC if the DRMON SNMP agent is running. Helpful Hints Here are some useful details to use LiveManager more effectively: 1. LiveManager is installed with a Start Menu->Programs entry of "PictureTel LiveManager". The entry is created in the common program group area (below the divider line). 2. The active endpoints list indicates the status of the endpoints by displaying three symbols in the columns between the IP Address and Aliases fields. * Indicates the endpoint is in a call + Indicates the endpoint is registered to the ILS! Indicates the endpoint is disabled 3. Note: An endpoint is disabled if a duplicate alias or terminal ID is detected in another zone after the endpoint has registered. The endpoint is re-enabled after the error condition is cleared. 4. You may wish to save the LiveManager configuration and calls history files before uninstalling. See Deinstalling LiveManager 3.1 for more information. On-Line Documentation Documentation files consisting of the LiveManager Installation Guide and LiveManager Product Guide are available in Adobe PDF and HTML formats.
