6 1. Important information Operation of this system or single units for measuring can causes high frequency signals with strong electromagnetic fields. National and international safety regulations as well as operating instructions of the individual components have to be carried out absolutely consequent. In the case of inappropriate use people can be endangered, things can be damaged and the use of other devices might be disturbed. 7 2. Foreword With the software EM-LAB you have a powerful tool for measuring radio disturbance of conducted emission (Conducted Disturbance and Disturbance Power) and high frequent fields (Radiated Disturbance) according to the CIPSR standard. This program also delivers a set of pre-programed, conform measurement runs to ease the handling and shorten the time until the start of the measurement. Therefor also stuff without special training and knowledge in the emissions measurement procedures and standards are able to measure emission according to the standards. For the automation of the measurement several auxiliary equipment is supported like LISN, Turn table controller, mast controller. For detailed examination of emissions sources the software gives you the possibility to measure single frequencies or an analyzer mode for a defined frequency band. Besides the measurement representing, processing and giving out the results is possible anywhere. Basic knowledge of Windows-handling is assumed. Manual EM-LAB V2.0 7 of 41

9 5. Installation of EM-LAB If you are using a GPIB interface you have to install first the GPIB converter and its software. Please refer to the manual of the GPIB interface manufacturer. The user might have the need of administrator privileges to install and run the software. To install EM-LAB take care of the following items. Start Windows. Insert the CD-ROM or extract the downloaded file in a directory Start the installation with a double click on SETUP.EXE. During the installation you can change the installation directory (see figure 1). Figure 1: Installation of EM-LAB After installation EM-LAB creates a program folder with the symbol EM-LAB. 10 In the installation directory sub directories were created for - Limit files - Correction files - Setup files - Result files Due to lack of space us it can happen that only the main program was sent to you without the NI-VISA RunTime-Engine (NI-VISA Run-Time Engine 5.4). De-Installation In case you need to uninstall EM-LAB from your system use the uninstaller supplied under Add or remove software in the Control panel. 7. How to get well skilled and learn about EM-LAB The structure and handling of the program is very easy to understand. Working with the program is the best method to learn the way to use it. In case any additional explanation is necessary there are several possibilities: This manual, which is supplied together with the software For the single menu items you found help in the online help (Help in the menu bar). Context sensitive help is available by activating the respective field and pressing the F1 -button on the keyboard or by clicking the right-hand mouse button (see figure 2). If problems cannot be solved by using the previous methods, contact our local distributor. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

11 8. Start of EM-LAB Start EM-LAB from the windows Start menu or double-click the icon. A start screen will occur during start phase. You can select the language (German or English) and you have the possibility to choose between the pre-programed test runs or the advanced mode Figure 2: Start window of EM-LAB Manual EM-LAB V of 41

12 With a left mouse click on the button Pre-programmed test runs a list opens with standardized emission measurements. Here you will find the important standards for the measurement of radio disturbance of conducted emission (Conducted Disturbance and Disturbance Power) and high frequent fields (Radiated Disturbance). All necessary parameters will be set for the test runs and only a few can be partly changed. Therefore a standardized measurement can be done without a deep knowledge of the standards. Figure 3: Start window of EM-LAB These pre-programed test runs cannot be changed but you can add a self-defined parameter setup file to this list which will be available later on in this selection. You will find this entry under the header User defined Manual EM-LAB V of 41

13 9. Program control This software is controlled via menu or the icon bar under the menu bar. Tooltips of the icons are displayed to show the function behind. 14 10. File Figure 6 : Pull down menu File Load settings This menu item allows you to load the setup files already installed or stored. In the *.sek files are settings for the used devices (receiver, mast-/turn table controller, LISN, etc.), and the scan settings, which includes the limit lines. All necessary setups to run a complete measurement Save settings All parameters of the current used devices (receiver, mast-/turn table controller, LISN, etc.), scan settings and limit lines are saved with this menu item. 15 10.4. Export results Results can be exported into files with another file format. Thus it gives you the possibility to create your own evaluations or documentations. At the moment there are an export to ASCII format and ASCII format with delimiters for easy import to Microsoft Excel Options Modify start window In the start window you can change the button color, text color in those buttons, the logo file and background picture. 16 Path settings There are default directories for limit files, correction files, setup files and results files. Those default directories which are already created during the installation could be changed here Print Results are printed directly to a printer or stored in a file in Bitmap or Jpeg format. 17 11. Edit Limit lines Under this menu item the limit lines are created and saved or existing limit lines are modified. Figure 9 : Edit limit lines Insert: Delete: Save: Inserts the given frequency and its corresponding value in the right position in the list. Deletes the marked entry in the list Saves the complete list in a file with the extension *.lim. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

18 Cancel: New: Load: All changes are ignored. Deletes all previous values to create a new limit line. Loads an existing limit line from a *.lim file. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

19 11.2. Antenna- / Clamp correction Correction factors of antennas or clamps can be edited here. Additional information for the documentation can be added. Preferences Here settings to the used devices, the measuring runs (scans) and the diagrams are made Devices Receiver Figure 15 : Settings of receiver At first the used receiver has to be selected from the list. If the receiver is not in the list it is not supported yet. On request a driver for not yet existing equipment can be programmed. As interface serially, USB, GPIB and Ethernet are supported. 26 The address of the device is selected under Address. For most devices this address can be found from the program during the start of a measurement run and will be automatically registered after successful connection. Also serial number and firmware version are automatically detected and registered if the device is able to provide this information. If not, those fields can be edited manually. Dates of calibration are used for the documentation. Therefor the traceability could be seen easily. Additional parameters are device specific and could be set under Preferences. In the picture above there is the possibility to activate a pulse limiter or to make the emission hearable with a built-in demodulator. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

28 Mast settings: Max. height: Min. height: Speed: Antenna tilting: Limit of the maximum antenna height. Limit of the minimum antenna height. Speed during the positioning of the antenna. Antenna tilting can be activated. Tilting of the antenna is adjusted according to its height in that way that the antenna is always pointing on the same point of the EUT. This function is only available with mast that support antenna tilting. Manual control Manual controlling of the mast can be activated here. During the positioning of the mast person or objects can be damaged close to the antenna. Make sure that there is enough space around the mast device and that no person is close to the mast device. Horizontal and vertical polarization can be chosen. The desired height is entered in the field Demand height. The current height is shown in the field Actual-height. With Start and Stop the desired position will be initiated or the movement will be stopped. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

29 Turntable settings: Max. angle: Limit of the maximum turntable angle. Min. angle: Speed: Limit of the maximum turntable angle. Speed during the positioning of the turn table. Manual control Manual controlling of the turntable can be activated here. During the positioning of the turntable person or objects can be damaged close to the turntable. Make sure that there is enough space around the turntable and that no person is close or on the turntable. The desired angle is entered in the field Demand angle. The current angle is shown in the field Actual-angle. With Start and Stop the desired position will be initiated or the movement will be stopped. Height priority, Pol. priority, turntable priority: Priority between height, polarization or turntable can be chosen. During the automatic measurement the mast (Mast priority active), polarization (pol. Priority active) or turntable (turntable priority active) will be initiated first to find the maximum emission. Settings of mast and turntable can be saved or loaded. File extension *.msu. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

30 12.2. Scan The settings under Scan are defining the test run. Up to 5 scan columns can be defined which are processed automatically one after the other. Figure 17 : Scan settings Start, Stop frequency, step size and the time for pre-scan and final-scan can be edited. With a double left click on the fields Detector and Limits a new window pops up for the settings of detectors, limit lines, correction files and data reduction. During the pre-scan up to 6 detectors can be chosen simultaneously. For the final scan only two detectors are allowed. Selection of limit files, corrections files is done with double left click in the corresponding field. Then a file select box opens for chosen the desired file. The directories which were preselected in the Options menu are shown first. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

31 Data reduction Acceptance level: Range: Defines the proximity to the limit from which a final scan has to be made. The whole frequency range is divide in a number of subranges. In each sub-range x numbers of frequencies are finally measured, if necessary. x = Max value / Range This assures that not only a narrow range with high amplitudes is measured but also among the complete frequency range final measurements are made. Max value: Verify immediately: Autom. final meas.: Maximum number of frequencies to be finally measured Final measurement of critical frequencies starts immediately. If active a final scan starts automatically after a pre-scan (if necessary), without user activity. 34 Y-Scaling: Manual: Automatic: Fixed input of Y-axes limitations. Software calculates best representation in Y-Axe automatically. Name: Plot Form: Point Form: Line Form: Color: Activates the curve you want to change. Changes curve styles (thin line, points connected, single points, vertical bars, thick lines, thin steps, thick steps) Changes point styles (empty square, solid square, diameter form, simple point, no point) Changes line styles (solid, dash, dot, dash dot, dash dot dot) Setting of color to the selected curve. Visible / invisible: You can hide or show curves Limit lines annotations: Activates or deactivates line annotations of the limit lines Zoom in/zoom out of a graphic area Zoom in Press <Ctrl> and click and hold the left mouse button to define the first corner of the box. Drag the mouse to define the opposite corner of the rectangle. When you are satisfied with the new boundaries of the graph, release the mouse button Zoom out To zoom out, press <Ctrl> and click and hold the right mouse button. The resolution incrementally decreases by 10% along the zoomed axes. You also can undo up to 25 of the most recent pans or zooms by pressing <Ctrl-Space> to reverse each successive change. Testing (Scans) Measurements can be started with the menu entry Testing Start, with the function key F2 or with the start icon in the icon bar Start Stop - Pause After the start the window for the test documentation pops up. 36 After that the receiver is searched at the available interfaces. Figure 22 : Automatic search for receiver at existing interfaces The measurement is started after a successful connection. Figure 23 : Window during scan Now a pre-scan with a reduced measuring time is started which scans the defined frequency range. Based on the results of the pre-scan and the settings in the data reduction critical frequencies are calculated and at those frequencies a final measurement with the standard measurement time and detector is made. 37 The critical frequencies and their values are shown in the table on the right side of the window and marked red if the value is above the limit line. Figure 24 : Window during final scan of critical frequencies After finishing the measurement a marker is shown on the screen for evaluation of the emission values. The cursor can be moved with mouse in a free mode manner or with the cursor keys along the curve. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

38 Figure 25 : Window after a complete scan With a double click on a critical frequency in the table you can select if you want to make an evaluation for this special frequency (Single freq.) or a sweep around that frequency (Spectrum analyzer). 39 13.2. Single measurement Figure 27 : Window of single measurement In this window you can make measurement at a single frequency. All available detectors were measured and displayed, if it s possible. All necessary settings can be accomplished during the measurement. As soon as the measured values are valid they were shown and updated regularly according to the chosen hold time Hold time Sweep measurement With this function it is possible to use the receiver as a spectrum analyzer. Set the start and stop frequency or chose the range with Center und Span. Now the receiver sweep continuously through this frequency range and the software shows the emission values until you push the Back button or set the option Stop after sweep. Manual EM-LAB V of 41

40 Figure 28 : Window in sweep measurement With the option Maximum Curve and Minimum Curve in the field Tools you can include a second and third line, which are showing the minimum and maximum emission level overall sweeps. Modification on the EUT and their effect on the emission could be easily seen. Up to two limit line can be activated in the graphics. So you can check also during the sweep if you are under the limits or not. Also two additional correction factors can be loaded (for example antenna correction, attenuation correction) which are calculated with the row signals of the receiver. If the sweep mode was started from the normal scan all the parameters from the scan can be used (Take over data from scan table). Manual EM-LAB V of 41

41 14. Help EM-LAB use two online-help systems. For each point of the menu there is a description in Help in the menu bar. For the parameters in the parameter windows you can select the online help via right mouse click of F1-key on the active field. 15. Product support Even today s software programs are not faultless by 100 % and therefore you might detect errors in EM-LAB. Maybe you have ideas for improvements, have specific requirements or would prefer use of a device that is not mentioned in the list?
