4 1. INTRODUCTION TO GVSIG A geographic information system is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data. The acronym GIS is sometimes used for Geographical Information Science or Geospatial Information Studies to refer to the academic discipline or career of working with geographic information systems. Moreover, GIS is a large domain within the broader academic discipline of Geoinformatics. In the simplest terms, GIS is the merging of cartography, statistical analysis, and computer science technology.

5 In a general sense, GIS applications are tools that allow users to create interactive queries, analyze spatial information, edit data in maps, and show the results of all these operations. 2. DATA ESTRUCTURE To be able to open the PACMAN project created in GVSig is necessary to copy the folder PACMAN_PROJECT in the directory root of the system C:/ and not to change any filename in this folder. C:/ PACMAN_PROJECT / PACMAN_PROJECT.gvsproj Inside the main folder "PACMAN_PROJECT" there are subfolders with the necessary information to run the existing project or make a new one. The information contained in these subfolders is listed below: 00_MARKETING ICONS o o o o o 00 PARTNERS PACMAN Logo of partners in JPG file 01 FLAGS Flags of countries in GIF file MAIN ACTIVITY Main Activity Icons in PNG file MAIN SEGMENT Main Segment Icons in PNG file ORGANIZATION TYPE Organization Type Icons in PNG file BASEMAP Countries, Seas, Major Roads, Major Rivers or lakes, Rivero r Lakes, Provinces, Rails and Principal Cities in Shape files.

OPEN PROJECT AND MANAGEMENT Execute GVSig Desktop file (EXE), then go to File icon, click on Open Project option, to search the project folder and select the existing Project: PACMAN_PROJECT (gvsproj extension) and click on Open.

7 Once the project is open the Project manager window is shown to create, see and configure the views, tables or maps

8 Views: Part of the project where the user can charge, modify and configure the graphic information. Tables: Part of the project where the user can charge and edit the alfa-numeric information. Maps: Part of the Project where the user can compose and prepare the thematic maps to print them.

9 4. VIEW GESTION Into Project Manager then select View icon and click on New option. It generates and opens a new empty untitled window. The name and properties (units, name, date, description, ) of the selected view can be changed by returning to the Project Manager window. When a view is selected by clicking on it, the application activates the View button to allow the user to execute different actions over the view. 4.1 Add Layer

10 Select the View icon, then select de Add Layer option, and will appear the Add Layer window. The user can add to the project the data files in several extension files in this window. The Pacman project only contains SHP files. Once all the files have been charged the viewing order can be assigned by selecting the shapefile and clicking on the Up or Down

11 button. Press OK to confirm. The application will display the view with the layers added. 4.1 Edit Layer The view created can be changed as required. How to choose the visibility colors; the point, line or area symbols, and our elements is explained below. In order to access these options, the layers that need to be modified must be previously selected. The right mouse button is then pressed to show a drop down menu allowing the user to change the name and the layer properties. Click on the Properties option.

12 Layer Visibility The major and minor scale to display the layer can be defined from the general tab. Point, line or area symbols Colors, shapes and icons can be assigned from the symbol tab.

13 Symbol s Point: An existing symbol can be selected. Furthermore, pictures can be imported to turn them into symbols. Lines: The color, width or line type can be chosen. It is possible to compose lines too. Areas: Select the fill and border color. Element s labeling The user can define the database field to create labels for the elements on the map. Moreover, the user can assign other properties relatives to text elements like font type, color, size

14 4.3 Import pictures and generate symbols Go to the Tools tag and then select the symbol option. Click on Import picture marker symbols.

15 The user has to indicate all the images to convert, will specify the destination folder and shall indicate an appropriate size. 5. TABLES GESTION Go to Project manager and select Tables, click on New. 5.1 Add Tables The tables to import must be in DBF format, select and open it.

16 5.2 Edit Tables Once is opened the table, the user must go to table tab and select Start editing. The user can now perform any changes in the database structure: Add or delete rows and fields, modify data,. To stop the edition, press Stop editing option.

17 6. MAPS GESTION In order to perform the thematic maps and print them proceed as below: 6.1 New map and prepare page Into Project Manager then select Map icon and click on New option. It generates and opens a new empty untitled map window. Return to Project manager window to rename and modify the properties (Active and visualize grid, introduce grid spacing, actívate rule, ) into selected map. Click on the Map window to select it, then the Map button will be activated. First select Prepare page and define the size (A3, A1,..), the print resolution, to give the orientation and customize margins.

18 Now the user can start to customize the future thematic map executing the different options available. The most important ones are: Insert View (Our active view window), insert legend and Text.

19 Once the thematic map is finished and ready to print, the user has to select the Map window and click on it, then the Map button will be activated. The map can be printed to see the final result.
