1 INTRODUCTION As an alternative to the single user Hardlock key that ships with PC-PUMP, companies can purchase a network Hardlock which will administer a concurrent license agreement for the copies of PC-PUMP purchased. In order to use this licensing approach, a computer will need to be used as a Hardlock server. This machine does not need to be dedicated to this purpose but should be available during the time period that PC-PUMP will be in use. This machine should also be reliable. Should the Hardlock server crash, the current users of PC-PUMP will receive error messages indicating that the program is unable to contact the server. This could result in loss of work for these users. C-FER Technologies recommends the use of a Windows NT variant (NT/2000/XP/Vista) or Linux for this purpose. The PC-PUMP installation CD contains some of the necessary software to install the Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista and Linux versions. C-FER has also assembled a more comprehensive group of these files in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP file available from the C-FER website. If you have problems, check for updated version of these packages at Aladdin's website at Select Support & Downloads. Select Hardlock from the drop down list box. Select Hardlock Driver. Under the Hardlock Setup Program section, you will need to download hlsw32_inst.zip and askmon.zip. The diagnostic program located in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Windows\Diagnostix directory is also useful for diagnosing problems with the Hardlock server configuration. For the Linux installation, you will need the hlserver program, the aksusbd kernel daemon and the aksparlnx module (for parallel models). For the hlserver, you will find the files located in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Linux\hlserver. For the aksusbd daemon and aksparlnx module, you can use the rpm files in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Linux\Rpms directory. Please read the Linux install.pdf document in the the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Linux for information on setting up the aksparlnx kernel module and the aksusbd daemon. Because of the dynamic nature of the Linux operating system, it is a good idea to check ftp://ftp.ealaddin.com/pub/aladdin.de/hardlock/linux for more up to date information if you have problems. There you will find various installation rpms and precompiled kernel modules. If you are running Novell, there is an nlm located in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Novell directory. Please see the instructions in the readme.txt. There is also a set of files for a DOS installation provided in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Dos directory although this is not recommended. If you have any problems installing the server software or have any questions, please contact C-FER Technologies Technical Support. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 1
2 INSTALLING THE HARDLOCK SERVER The Hardlock server software can be run on a number of different operating systems: Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista, Windows 95/98, Linux, Novell and DOS. C-FER Technologies recommends using a stable environment such as Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista, Linux, or Novell to provide the server. Installation instructions for these environments are provided in this document. Although largely not in use any more, Windows 95/98 and DOS are not considered stable enough to provide reliable long term solutions. There are two components to the Hardlock server. The first is the server software as described above. The second is the optional administration software which runs on a Windows based system and eases the administration of the Hardlock server. This software can administer Hardlocks running on any of the platforms from a single workstation. 2.1 Installing on Windows NT/2000/XP Prerequisites for Installation You must have administration level access to the server that will have the Hardlock server software installed on it. You must have attached the network Hardlock module to one of the servers parallel or USB ports depending on which model you have Installation Procedure The Hardlock server software for Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista is found on the Aladdin website as per the second paragraph of Section 1 above. This installation program is also included in the HARDLOCKSERVER.zip file in the Windows\Server directory. This file is available from the C-FER website. To install the software, run the hlsw32.exe program on the Windows machine that will be acting as the Hardlock server. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 2
Illustration 1: Welcome Screen Illustration 2: Choose Installation Directory When the welcome screen appears (Illustration 1: Welcome Screen), click on Next. You will be asked to select a directory to install the software into (Illustration 2: Choose Installation Directory). If the default directory is not suitable, click on the Browse... button and select a different location. Once satisfied, click Next. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 3
Illustration 3: Backup Then, you will be asked if you would like to backup existing files that will be replaced (Illustration 3: Backup). It is strongly recommended that you allow the installation to backup these files in case something is damaged. We have not seen any issues of this, but it is a reasonable safety measure. If you run the installation more than once, you may want to say No to avoid replacing files that were from before the installation with the same ones that the installation will create. Illustration 4: Proceed With Installation Now you will be prompted to click Next to install the Hardlock server software (Illustration 4: Proceed With Installation). Press Next to install. If the Hardlock server has been previously installed and is currently running, you will be prompted to stop it (Illustration 5: Stop Existing HL-Server). If there is nobody using the server then click OK. Otherwise click Cancel to terminate the install and have any users exit the PC-PUMP program or any other Hardlock protected applications so that you can continue the installation. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 4
Illustration 5: Stop Existing HL-Server Illustration 6: Installation Progress During the installation process, the server install progress dialog will be displayed (Illustration 6: Server Installation Progress). If you would like to cancel this operation, click the cancel button. Now you will be prompted to install the Hardlock device driver to the server (Illustration 7: Install Hardlock Device Driver). Even if the Hardlock service is already installed, we recommend that you let the installation program install it so that the version matches the Hardlock server software. Click Yes to proceed and install the Hardlock device driver. Click No to leave the currently installed driver alone. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 5
Illustration 7: Install Hardlock Device Driver Illustration 8: Driver Installation Progress If you proceed with the device driver installation, a progress dialog will appear as the files are copied (Illustration 8: Driver Installation Progress). Clicking Cancel will abort the installation. Once the installation of the device driver has completed, the installation complete dialog will be displayed (Illustration 9: Server Installation Complete). Click on Finish to exit the installation. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 6
Illustration 9: Successful Installation Complete 2.2 Installing on Novell The software required for installation on a Novell 3.1X or greater server is included on the PC-PUMP installation CD in the <CDPATH>\Hlserver directory and in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP file in the novell directory. The following instructions have been included from the Hardlock End Users' Manual which is available on the PC-PUMP Installation CD in the <CDPATH>\Documentation directory and is also available upon request. HL-Server can be loaded once on each computer. Up to three Hardlock modules are supported on each HL-Server. You will need the file HLSERVER.NLM (which is included in the HLSERVER.ZIP file which is located on the PC-PUMP Installation CD in the <CDPATH>\HLSERVER directory) and the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Novell directory for installing HL-Server under Novell. NOTE: The current version of the CLIB.NLM and STREAMS.NLM files are needed for correct operation. Updates can be downloaded from the Novell website Prerequisites for Installation You need access to the server console in order to install the NLM. Make sure that you have the appropriate access rights under Netware. The HLSERVER.NLM file must be located on a network drive in order for the NLM to be started. If you copy the file into the [server name]/sys:system folder on your NetWare servers, you do not need to enter a path when starting the NLM. Connect the Hardlock module to any printer port (LPT port) or USB port on the computer. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 7
2.2.2 Installation Procedure HL-Server can now be installed and started from the system console of the server: LOAD HLSERVER -MODULE:17092 Following this, the installation can be tested from a client computer Controlling The Service HL-Server can be controlled directly from the command line layer using straightforward entries. This makes it possible to implement HL-Server functions in batch programs (NCF). The various functions are input in the form of switches when the program is activated. HL-Server for NLM can also be operated using a standard Novell user interface. 2.3 Installing On Linux Prerequisites for Installation You must have root level access to the server that will have the Hardlock server software installed on it. You must have attached the network Hardlock module to one of the servers parallel or USB ports depending on which model you have. To install the Hardlock server on a Linux based server, the following files are used: 1. aksparlnx.o: This kernel module is used to access parallel port Hardlocks. The version must match your running kernel. 2. aksusbd: This kernel module is used to access the USB Hardlocks. 3. hlserver: This is the server program that will be run. Currently, Aladdin has made versions of these files available for various kernels including the newer Redhat and Suse distributions. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 8
2.3.2 Installation Procedure 1. Obtain the required files from the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP file or from the Aladdin website at ftp://ftp.ealaddin.com/pub/aladdin.de/hardlock/linux/. 2. Place the aksparlnx.o module in the kernel library path (usually /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/drivers/parport) and the aksusbd and hlserver programs in a suitable place such as /sbin. 3. Create a suitable script to start the server. Here is an example: #! /bin/bash modprobe parport_pc insmod aksparlnx.o aksusbd hlserver -module: d 4. Test it from a client machine running PC-PUMP or using the Aladdin Monitor program Controlling The Service The server is operational while the hlserver program is running. To stop the server, simply kill the hlserver process. You can create the standard startup scripts for the server and place them in the appropriate directory for your distribution (typically /etc/rc.d/init.d on Redhat or similar systems). C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 9
3 MONITORING THE HARDLOCK SERVER The Hardlock server component is the service that controls access to the Hardlock from the client machines running PC-Pump. Although not necessary to get the Hardlock server running, it is advisable to install the Aladdin Monitor program on one of the computers on the network in order to allow administration of this service. This does not need to be the same computer that serves the key and it can be very convenient to install this program on an administrator workstation instead. 3.1 Installing the Aladdin Monitor The Aladdin Monitor program allows you to control the Hardlock server service on all of the platforms. With this program you can start and stop the service, disconnect stale sessions, install and remove Hardlock modules, etc. To install the Aladdin monitor program, run the program called askmon32.exe, found in the HARDLOCKSERVER.ZIP\Windows\Alladdin Monitor directory or from the Aladdin website (as per paragraph 2 of Section 1). llustration 10: Aladdin Monitor Welcome Screen I The Aladdin Monitor welcome screen will be displayed next (Illustration 10: Aladdin Monitor Welcome Screen). Click Next to proceed. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 10
Illustration 11: License Agreement You will now be prompted to accept the license agreement (Illustration 11: License Agreement). Review this agreement and click I agree and click next to proceed. Illustration 12: Select Program Location Select the desired program location using the dialog presented next (Illustration 12: Select Program Location). If the suggested location is inadequate, use the Browse button to select a different location. Press Next when done. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 11
Illustration 13: Backup If you would like to make backup copies of any replaced files (recommended), select the Yes radio button and click Next. If you would like to skip the backup, select the No radio button and click Next (Illustration 13: Backup ). Please note that if you install the program twice, it is advisable to say No in order to retain the correct copies of any replaced files. Illustration 14: Start Installation The Start Installation dialog is now displayed (Illustration 14: Start Installation). To start the installation, click the Next button. During the installation process, the progress dialog will be displayed (Illustration 15: Progress Dialog). To cancel the installation click the Cancel button. Once the installation is complete, the Installation Complete dialog will be displayed. Click the Finish button to complete the installation (Illustration 16: Installation Complete). C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 12
Illustration 15: Progress Dialog Illustration 16: Installation Complete 3.2 Manually Adding The Hardlock Module Although this should not be necessary because the server should automatically add the module when it detects a request from the PC-PUMP program, here are the instructions to manually add the module. To install the PC-PUMP module which represents the network Hardlock, run the Aladdin Monitor program on your server. This is done by selecting Start-> Programs-> Aladdin-> Monitor-> AKS Monitor. The program will take a minute and interrogate the available Hardlock servers and will then display the programs main screen (Illustration 17: Aladdin Monitor Main Screen). C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 13
Illustration 17: Aladdin Monitor Main Screen Illustration 18: Aladdin Monitor With Server Selected To install the module, click on the server that is running the Hardlock service in the tree view on the left to select it (Illustration 18: Aladdin Monitor With Server Selected). Enter the module address into the Module address entry box and click Add. If the module is available, it will be added to the servers configuration and should show up in the list of installed modules (Illustration 19: Aladdin Monitor With Installed Module). C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 14
Illustration 19: Aladdin Monitor With Installed Module C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 15
4 CONFIGURING THE CLIENT COMPUTER You are now ready to run PC-PUMP on the client machines. Perform the installation as described in the PC-PUMP users guide. When you execute the first copy of PC-PUMP, the server should automatically add the required module (17092) to the list of modules on the server. Under normal circumstances on a small network, it should not be necessary to modify the client installation to see the new server. You can try to run PC-PUMP on the client and see if the program finds the server correctly. However, if this does not work, see the next section of troubleshooting for suggestions on problem resolution. C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 16
5 TROUBLESHOOTING If you run into difficulties and the PC-PUMP program complains that the Hardlock is not installed, here are some debugging steps that can be tried. 1. Verify that the machine running the Hardlock server program is accessible. This can usually be achieved by simply pinging the server computer. This is done by using the command ping <server ip address> from the client machine. 2. Install the Aladdin Monitor program and make sure that the machine that has the Hardlock attached to it is displayed in the list of servers on the left. Using the Aladdin Monitor program add the module for the PC-PUMP Hardlock manually using the instructions in Section If the Aladdin Monitor program fails to see the computer with the Hardlock server software, try reinstalling the server software on that computer. 4. On TCP/IP networks, if the client computer resides on a different subnet than the server, then it may be necessary to use the environment variables in Appendix A to specify the location of the server. 5. If you run into problems, there are a number of environment variables that can be of use to adjust the behavior of the Hardlock device driver on the client computer. They are listed in Appendix A with their suggested values. A typical set of values is as follows SET HL_SEARCH=IP SET HLS_IPADDR=<hardlock server name or ip> SET HLS_WAIT=5000 C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 17
6 APPENDIX A ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES Environment Variable Description Suggested Values Hl_SEARCH This variable determines the locations and order of locations that are to be searched for a key. This can have the following values separated by commas. 378e 278e 3bce Parallel port locations 2f8s 3f8s Serial locations USB USB keys IP TCP/IP IPX Netware NETBIOS IP HLS_IPADDR This variable specifies the locations of servers to try when locating the Hardlock server via TCP/IP. Enter the IP address of the server with the Hardlock service or multiple IP addresses separated by commas if there are more than one. IP address of server HLS_WAIT This variable specifies the amount of time to wait before timing out the request in milliseconds (5 seconds) HLS_RETRIES This variable specifies the number of times to retry on failure. 5 (default) C-FER Technologies (1999) Inc. - Page 18
