1 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 1 1 Introduction In order to reduce the amount of bandwidth used when printing and to improve the overall performance and online experience for the customers that we host on our servers, we have installed a product called ThinPrint on our application servers. ThinPrint compresses print files before sending them to your printer and, if necessary, allows us to control the amount of bandwidth used by your print jobs. This results in more of the limited Internet bandwidth being available for your interactive sessions. This will result in improved response time and less keyboard lag while you are performing your data entry tasks. In order to be able to function, ThinPrint requires that a small piece of client software be installed on each of your workstations. Installing the client software is quite easy and will only take approximately five minutes for each workstation. To install the ThinPrint client you must take the following steps: 1. Download the software 2. Install the software 3. Configure the software Each of these steps in described in the following chapters.
2 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 2 2 Downloading the Software To get a copy of the ThinPrint client software use Internet Explorer to browse to Our home page will be displayed like this: Click in the ThinPrint link, shown by the red arrow. The ThinPrint Client Download page will be displayed like this:
3 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 3 To download the ThinPrint client for Windows NT, 2000, 2003 or XP, click the link shown by the red arrow. To download the client for Windows Vista, click the link shown by the blue arrow. The Internet Explorer download security window will be displayed as shown:
4 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 4 If the Run button, shown by the red arrow, is enabled click it. The file will begin to download and when it is finished the ThinPrint client installation will begin. See the next chapter for detailed installation instructions. If the Run button is not enabled, click the Save button, shown by the blue arrow. The Save As dialog will then be displayed as shown: Select the folder where you would like the file to be saved using the control at the top of the dialog, shown by the blue arrow. Make a note of the folder name as you may need it later to be able to find the file that you are downloading. When you are ready to download the ThinPrint client, click the Save button, shown by the red arrow. The file will begin to download. When the download is finished, the Download Complete dialog will be displayed as shown:

6 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 6 3 Installing the ThinPrint Client 3.1 Installing on Windows NT, 2000, 2003 and XP Installing the ThinPrint client is very simple. For the most part you only have to accept the defaults and click the Next button. Each dialog presented during the installation process is shown below, along with any necessary actions that you may need to take to respond to the dialog. Click Next. Click the radio button next to 'I accept the terms of the license agreement' and click Next.

8 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 8 Click Install. Click Finish. The ThinPrint client software is now installed. Before you can use ThinPrint there are a few simple configuration changes that you will need to make. See the next chapter for detailed instructions on configuring your system to use ThinPrint.

12 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 12 4 Configuration 4.1 Configuring the ThinPrint Client In many cases the ThinPrint client does not require any configuration in order to function adequately. However, there are instances where some of your printers may not appear in your Remote Desktop session. In this case, you will need to make a simple configuration change to the ThinPrint client. To do this, close all other programs running on your PC. Then start the ThinPrint client configuration program by click Start All Programs.print Client Windows Configure. The configuration dialog will appear as shown: Change to the printer assignment view by clicking the Assignment tab. This dialog will change to look like this: Scroll down until you find the printer that is missing from your Remote Desktop session. Check the box to the left of the printer name. You can do this for as many printers as necessary. When you are finished, click OK. 4.2 Configuring Remote Desktop Before you can use the ThinPrint client you need to make a change to your Remote Desktop configuration. To do this start Remote Desktop as you normally do. The following dialog will appear:

14 ThinPrint Client Installation Page 14 Uncheck the Printers box. Click Connect. This will prevent your printers from being assigned to your Remote Desktop session in the traditional way. If you fail to do this step, when you log in using Remote Desktop you will see your printers twice. Once with the traditional name and once with the new, ThinPrint name.
