8 1 Installing and Configuring the HBA and Driver Overview EMC supports NetWare hosts running NetWare 5.x or 6.x over Fibre Channel through any of several QLogic HBAs. Refer to the EMC Support Matrix for the latest information on qualified HBAs, drivers, and firmware, as well as the latest boot support information. PCI Express Novell NetWare 5.1 and 6.5 do support the qlogic QLE2360 PCI Express HBA. See Troubleshooting on page 2-10 for current limitations. Support Pack 1 for NetWare 6.5 Issue Novell has found an issue in Support Pack 1 for NetWare 6.5 that customers should be aware of. This issue should affect only a minimum number of customers. The issue only affects those customers who have NetWare 6.5 with Support Pack 1 running NSS volumes with compression. Although the original compressed files are not affected at the source, compressed files copied to a destination NetWare 6.5 Server with Support Pack 1 installed can become corrupted. These compressed files can become corrupted when customers perform the following on their compressed volumes: Restores Migrations Server Consolidations NCOPY Novell has an update available for the problem and it is recommended that ALL customers who have deployed NetWare 6.5 with Support Pack 1 apply this update. (Customers who have only deployed NetWare 6.5 without Support Pack 1 do not need to apply the update.) Complete information on both the issue and the software update is available at the following location: This update is also being integrated into Support Pack 1 and will be available very soon. Novell regrets any inconvenience that this might cause and is committed to responding immediately to such issues and getting 1-2 EMC Fibre Channel with QLogic HBAs in NetWare Hosts

22 1 Installing and Configuring the HBA and Driver Incorporating EMC Fibre Channel Once the EMC storage array has devices assigned and configured, the host can see all the target EMC devices assigned to that interface. Devices are presented to the host in the same manner as devices accessed through a standard SCSI interface. Recognizing LUNs EMC storage array devices are addressed on the SCSI bus using SCSI target IDs and SCSI LUNs. Each target ID can have up to 128 LUNs associated with it. The Target ID needed to address a device is determined as follows: FC-SW environment The Target ID is assigned by the HBA driver on a first-come, first-served basis. FC-AL environment The Target ID is determined by the Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop Physical Address (AL_PA). A Loop_ID of 00 (AL_PA of EF) will have LUNS behind Target ID 0, Loop_ID 01 has LUNs behind target ID 1, and so on EMC Fibre Channel with QLogic HBAs in NetWare Hosts

23 Invisible Body Tag 2 Configuring an EMC Boot Device NetWare hosts have been qualified for booting from EMC storage array devices interfaced through Fibre Channel as described in the EMC Support Matrix. 30 2 Configuring an EMC Boot Device NetWare 6.x ships with QLogic driver version 6.50j, which has not been qualified to work with remote boot. Installing the HBA Driver into a New Server Follow these steps to install the driver into a newly installed NetWare 6.x server: 1. When the Select a Platform Support Module and Storage Adapter window appears during the installation procedure, select Modify in the Option box. 2. Select the storage adapters; then press ENTER. 3. Press INSERT to select a driver from the list of drivers provided with NetWare. 4. Press Insert again to install the 6.51<rev level> driver from the driver diskette. (Do not use the 6.50j driver that ships with NetWare 6.x.) Press RETURN to scan the diskette for your HBA driver.! CAUTION Load only the instance of the driver that has LUN 0 attached to it. (This is your boot LUN.) If you load a second instance of the driver, the install will fail. Press ESC to back out of the screen and avoid loading the second instance of the driver. 5. After the driver has been loaded from the diskette, select the driver to modify, and press ENTER. 6. Select the property to modify. Select Yes to the options /qualified /allpaths /portnames /lunzero. 7. When the driver is loaded properly for the QLA2xxx adapter, select Continue in the Options box, and finish the NetWare server installation. 8. After the installation is complete, you should do a cold boot before the OS is loaded for the first time. 9. Add other instances of driver by editing startup.ncf. 2-8 EMC Fibre Channel with QLogic HBAs in NetWare Hosts

31 Configuring an EMC Boot Device 2 Supported Configurations 1. EMC supports qualified NetWare configurations without PowerPath whether booted from a local disk or from the EMC array. In an SRDF environment, it is recommended that the SYS: and DOS partition are placed on the local drive. There is a strong possibility that the DOS partition will become corrupted when the initial server fails and the SYS: and DOS partitions are migrated over the SRDF link. If the DOS partition becomes corrupted the chances of the server booting are reduced. 2. If the configuration involves placing the boot and SYS: volumes on different SCSI channels (for example, different FA channels on the Symmetrix) care must be taken to avoid boot-time target renumbering situations. Consult EMC Support if you plan to use such a configuration. Please note that EMC does not qualify or support any multipathing configurations other than PowerPath. 3. EMC strongly recommends that users desiring to use PowerPath with NetWare boot the OS from a local drive while placing SYS: and all other data volumes on the external array. 4. In some circumstances where the boot channel is under PowerPath control and that channel fails, a reboot may be necessary to restore correct server operation with both paths. The server should operate correctly until the reboot occurs, and failback will occur if the secondary path fails after the boot path is restored. 5. Customers wishing to run multipathed configurations without local storage must load DOSFAT.NSS as early in the boot process as practical. Customers running NetWare 6.0 servers and prior may hang or become unstable if a channel loss/restore occurs when the DOS boot channel is under PowerPath control and DOSFAT is not in use. ALL Realmode DOS access was removed in NW6.5 which alleviates the problems with respect to the server possibly hanging if there is a SAN channel disconnect/reconnect when the system was booted from the SAN. DOSFAT will help alleviate problems with NetWare 6.0 servers and prior, but imposes the following restrictions: Per Novell TID and others, you must set AUTO RESTART AFTER ABEND=0. This ensures that ABEND core dumps and other information are not written to the boot drive Supported Configurations 2-9

32 2 Configuring an EMC Boot Device during an event. Your server will NOT automatically reboot if an ABEND occurs, and you will have to manually intervene to restart. A possibility exists that certain NetWare operations could still corrupt your boot partition (see Novell TID ). Therefore, EMC recommends that you generate and maintain complete offline backups of your DOS boot partition in the event that a restore is needed. EMC cannot guarantee recovery of any information on the boot drive. In some isolated circumstances, a reboot may be necessary to restore correct server operation if the boot channel is under PowerPath control. EMC does not support booting NetWare servers from external storage when PowerPath is in use unless DOSFAT.NSS is loaded as described previously. Troubleshooting Problems and Solutions Problem Solution Problem Solution Here are some possible problems and their solutions: Problems have occurred when installing fabric boot on a Symmetrix system. When you have multiple LUNs on the Symmetrix system and you attempt to install NetWare to one of the LUNs, the operating system will sometimes acquire LUNs besides the one to which you intended to install. To get around this, we have used the process of creating one LUN and then performing the NetWare install. To install a second server that will be fabric boot, repeat the process of creating one additional LUN and then loading the operating system. Continue this process until you have reached the desired number of operating systems running across the fabric. The driver for the second QLogic card does not load during install. Load only the instance of the driver that has LUN 0 attached to it EMC Fibre Channel with QLogic HBAs in NetWare Hosts

33 Configuring an EMC Boot Device 2 Problem Solution Problem Receiving the message The critical component (LSL.NLM) was not loaded or executed or is missing. This message appears after the install is complete and the OS is loading. This message appears when you are running a Brocade 2800 with a2.3.0 and lower. Upgrade the switch to 2.5.0d. The following applies only if you are installing your operating system to a LUN on the EMC storage array and intend to use PowerPath, ATF, or SRDF for failover. (This practice is commonly called fabric boot.) When running SRDF and the SYS: volume / DOS partition are located on the array, great care should be taken. There is a strong possibility that the DOS partition will be corrupted if the attempt is made to fail it over across the SRDF link. At the time of failure there is no file level protection at the DOS level. The SYS: partition is commonly accessing files in the DOS partition. If file access is happening during the failure and the SYS: / DOS partitions are migrated across the SRDF link, corruption is possible and the likelihood of server booting from the migrated SYS: / DOS partition is reduced. The following issue does not occur if you are loading your operating system to the local host. The HBA BIOS does not have a means to failover a path to C: while DOS is running. (DOS is still running at anytime that NetWare is running.) This means that moving the system and/or DOS partition to a different HBA and running a process at the server will cause the process to hang. NetWare periodically accesses C: by using the DOS INT13 interface, which communicates with the HBA BIOS. The 6.80<rev level>.ham driver does not get involved in any accesses to C:. If the path to C: is lost, DOS cannot complete any INT13 requests and hangs, which causes NetWare to hang also (because NetWare issued the INT13 requests and is waiting for completion). What all this means is that while the 680<rev level>.ham may be able to dynamically failover paths to SYS: (and any other volumes also), the HBA BIOS is not able to do this with paths to C:. Solution DOSFAT.NSS treats the C: partition as an NSS partition and does not use the DOS INT 13 interface. Instead, it uses the HAM instance that is loaded on the HBA through which the C: partition is attached. In order for the C: partition to fail over correctly, you must load DOSFAT.NSS. EMC recommends that you add the DOSFAT.NSS statement to your AUTOEXEC.NCF so DOSFAT.NSS will be loaded during the boot process. Troubleshooting 2-11

34 2 Configuring an EMC Boot Device Problem Solution The Novell NCMMON utility, which is used for powering PCI slots up/down for PCI hot swap, is not able to work properly with PCI Express. Novell is addressing this issue in ACPIDRV. An updated ACPIDRV is scheduled to ship with NW51SP8 and NW65SP3 in Q105. Loading HBA Drivers The following table contains help for loading the HBA drivers. During the install of NetWare, use the Fibre Login column in the Connectivity Status Table (right click on your storage array and go to Connectivity Status) to help you load your HBA drivers. Note the following relating to the table and the example in it: The words active and inactive refer to the Fibre Login status. LUN 0 is attached to HBA 0 and LUN 1 is attached to HBA 1. When LUNs are mentioned, they are assumed to be in the storage group with your server. HBA 0 HBA 1 HBA is active during post. (LUN 0) HBA is inactive during post. (LUN 0) HBA is active. You can load this instance of the driver during install. (LUN 0) HBA is active in post. (LUNs 0 and 1) HBA is active, and you can load this instance of the driver during install. (LUNs 0 and 1) HBA is active in post and driver load. (LUNs 0 and1) HBA is inactive. You cannot load this instance of the driver. Install fails. (LUN 0) HBA is inactive in post. (LUNs 0 and1) HBA is inactive, and you cannot load this instance of the driver during install. Install fails. (LUNs 0 and1) HBA is inactive in post, and becomes active during driver load. Load instance of driver after server is running and edit startup.ncf (via System Console and NWCONFIG). (LUNs 0 and1) 2-12 EMC Fibre Channel with QLogic HBAs in NetWare Hosts
