1 Connection Protocol for McKnight Brain Institute Version 0.3 October 16, Pre-connection preparation: 1. You will need to get a GatorID number from Elizabeth Webb (webbe@ufl.edu). You can then use this number to get a gatorlink account as described below. 2. Please also request a machine account from the machine operator if you don t have one for the machine you are requesting. 2 Gatorlink Account: 1. Once you have your GatorID, please visit and click on the Create Account box on the right. 2. Then enter the required information (Figure 1) and click Next to select your gatorlink user-name and password. Please complete each step to complete your registration. 2 3 Establishing VPN Access: 1. Please download and install the VPN client from the following website using your GatorLink username and password: (Figure 2) Figure 2: VPN Download Page 2. Connect to the UF health VPN by starting the client and connecting to: (Figure 3) Figure 3: VPN Login 2

3 4 Installing the MobaXterm connection software 1. Download the MobaXterm software from: (Figure 4) Figure 4: Download Page 2. If you downloaded the portable version, please extract to a known folder and if you downloaded the installer, please install the software from the executable. 3

4 5 Connecting via X11 forwarding (SSH) 1. Open the MobaXterm software 2. Click on Session in the upper left (Figure 5) Figure 5: MobaXterm Window 3. Select SSH as the connection protocol. 4. Please enter the hostname and user-name for the system you are using. Table 1 lists the hostnames for various instruments in the MBI. For example, enter nmr470.mbi.ufl.edu for the hostname and your 11T user-name for the user-name (Figure 6) to access the 11T system. 5 Figure 6: MobaXterm Settings 5. Click OK and enter your system password. 6. Please choose to let the system save your password or not within the local software. 7. At the terminal, type vnmrj to launch the NMR imaging software for the 11T and TOENTER for bruker machines. 8. Once you are done, type exit in the ssh terminal to end the connection. 9. Finally, end your VPN session to re-establish normal network protocols. 6 Connecting via VNC Server 1. Start by completed steps 1-6 in the section on connecting via SSH (Section 5). 2. From the terminal, start a VNC session by typing vncserver --geometry WxH where the W and H represent the width and height of your desired display in pixels (for example, 1280x1024). 3. Take note of the display number in the output of the vncserver command (:3 in this example as highlighted in Figure 7). 5

7 5. Select VNC as the connection protocol. 6. Please enter the hostname and user-name for the system you are using. Table 1 lists the hostnames for various instruments in the MBI. For example, enter nmr470.mbi.ufl.edu for the hostname if connecting to the 11T and set the Port to 590P, where P is your display number from before (Figure 9). Figure 9: MobaXterm Window 7. Type in your system login name and password if requested. 8. Please choose to let the system save your password or not within the local software. 9. You should see the system desktop if the connection is created successfully. 10. After you are done, type vncserver -kill:desktop# within the SSH terminal to kill the VNC session. 11. Type exit in the ssh terminal to end that connection as well. 12. Finally, end your VPN session to re-establish normal network protocols. 7
