1. Description 1.1. Introduction Information in this section consists of product description and information on the Device Configuration Software (DevCS). Information in this section consists of the software s features and specifications Product Description The DevCS is a Windows application that allows a user to control adjustments and functions of the Digital Audio Control System (DACS) equipment including AMU50 Audio Management Unit and the ACP5x Audio Control Panels. The PC Application provides a graphical user interface for the display and control of the adjustment levels and function behavior or configuration. The configuration can be saved as a file. The configuration can be written to, and read from, the DACS equipment over a serial data communication bus Important Notes Files that have not been previously saved cannot be programmed into the RM01 or AMU50 when in LIMITED operational mode. It is the responsibility of the installer approved by the local certification authority to only supply approved configuration files (XML files) to the end user. Contact the factory for the latest information bulletins relating to this release Important Notes About This Release Release Version This version of DevCS allows any file (regardless of personality) to be opened by DevCS in a read-only mode (LIMITED operational mode). The LIMITED personality has been removed. Opening a file that uses a different personality than the one currently selected by DevCS will automatically change the personality. Passwords previously associated with changing the personality are used to enter FULLY ADJUSTABLE operational mode for that same personality. This allows files to be created and modified in that given personality. Refer to Section for additional information. This version corrects the VOX Threshold issue discussed in the notes about the previous release ( ) by fixing the default VOX Level (After ACP Failure) configuration values in installation personality. It also now automatically fixes out of range VOX Level (After ACP Failure) configuration values created using previous releases of DevCS. This correction is only made while in FULLY ADJUSTABLE operational mode. It is important to note that when this issue is corrected the configuration settings stored in the XML file will be changed. For this reason, a dialog box will open notifying the user that this has been done. When operating in LIMTED operational mode, no changes will be made to the configuration settings. This version also corrects the ICS Tie Line issue, discussed in the notes about the previous release ( ). In FULLY ADJUSTABLE operational mode, this is done when a file is opened. There are two variations of this correction: 1. The file being opened was created in version of DevCS in installation personality and has not been modified with version of the tool. Installation personality in version of the tool only allowed the Analog Tie Line to be selected, so the configuration file will be changed to reflect an Analog setting in the current version of the tool. The user will be notified by a dialog box that the configuration file has been changed. 2. The file being opened was created in version of DevCS in installation personality and it has been resaved (and possibly changed) with version of DevCS. Since there is no way to tell if the ICS Tie Line setting has been manually changed in version of the tool, the Page 1

user will be asked if they intended to have the Digital Tie Line selected. Based on the response (YES/NO), the tool will update the configuration file to reflect the appropriate setting for the Analog Tie Line. This will also change the configuration file. When operating in LIMITED operational mode, the tool reacts to the ICS Tie Line Settings as follows: 1. If the file has already been corrected by version of the tool, it will open normally. 2. If the file being opened was created in version of DevCS in installation personality and has not been modified with version of the tool, DevCS will automatically interpret the configuration settings such that Analog tie line is selected (without modifying the configuration data). This will allow legacy configuration files to continue to be used without being updated by the tool in situations where it is not convenient to have the file modified. 3. If the file being opened was created in version of DevCS in installation personality and it has been resaved (and possibly changed) with version of DevCS, the user will be notified that the file has an error and that the installer should be contacted for a replacement file. This is done because there is no way to tell which setting (Digital/Analog) was intended. 4. In all other cases the file will open normally. In a related issue, a configuration that was programmed to a device using installation personality of DevCS does not maintain the correct ICS Tie Line setting when read back from the same device with version of DevCS. Instead, DevCS reads back the ICS Tie Line setting (for devices programmed with version in installation personality) as Digital, when it should be Analog. This read back issue is corrected in release of DevCS. Files created and programmed with installation personality of DevCS will maintain their Analog ICS Tie Line setting when read back with DevCS and later. Lastly, customers have reported that the purpose of the ACP [Disabled Values] and USER [Disabled Values] pages are confusing. To address this issue the titles of these pages have been changed to Disabled ACP Settings and Disabled User Settings in order to reduce the confusion. Additional information was also added to Sections and A future, more extensive revision will further address the reported problem to add greater clarity Release Version The previous release of DevCS (version ) contained a bug in which the emergency phones impedance setting sent to the AMU50 and RM01 would select 8 ohms in INSTALLATION personality (the default) even though the only selectable option for this setting is 150 ohms. The overall effect of this is that settings downloaded using the previous version of DevCS will sound quieter than they should for a given setting. This has been corrected in version It is important to note that since the previous release used 8 ohms and this release uses 150 ohms, the output levels observed in emergency mode for the same configuration file (XML file) will differ depending on the version of DevCS used to download to the AMU50 and/or RM01. To continue using the same levels as before, the volume settings on the emergency mode page will need to be adjusted (decreased) and downloaded using the new release. See Service Bulletin No. AMU for more information. This version fixes a bug where empty wave files occurring between non-empty wave files prevent all wave files from being transferred to and/or read from the AMU50 and RM01 that occur after the empty slot. Because of this fix, older versions of DevCS that read from the AMU50 and/or RM01 when these devices have empty wave files may throw exceptions. It is advised to upgrade to the latest version of DevCS to prevent such issue from occurring. See Service Bulletin No. AMU for more information. A bug was found during the release of this version that also existed in previous versions relating to the default ICS VOX Level (After ACP Failure). When new is used in installation personality to create a new file with default settings, the ACP Page s ICS VOX Level (After ACP Failure) displays PTT in DevCS, but the value sent to the AMU50 is -48 dbr. This effectively turns off any VOX functionality (After ACP Page 2

Failure). In other words, the VOX is set to the LIVE or HOT setting instead of to PTT. This will be corrected in the next version of DevCS. The workaround for this issue is to click each of the VOX Level (After ACP Failure) sliders on each ACP page at least once and resave a file. For this release of DevCS, the installer using DevCS can change the default settings for new files using the Save As Defaults feature. See Service Bulletin No. AMU for more information. Lastly, it just prior to the release of DevCS it was discovered that files saved with version in installation personality do not maintain their ICS Tie Line setting (digital vs. analog) when opened in version The workaround to this is to open the AMU50 page in DevCS and change the dropdown back to Analog and resave the file. See Service Bulletin No. AMU for more information Design Features The DevCS is a Windows based application that follows standard windows conventions designed to simplify navigation through various functions Specifications Computer Type: Computer Requirements: IBM Pentium class compatible 256 MB RAM memory (512 MB recommended) Minimum 40 MB of available hard disk space USB configurable as COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4 COM9 serial data link Operating System: Windows XP, Service Pack 3 or Windows 7 Page 3

3. Operation 3.1. Introduction Information in this section consists of the functional and operational procedures for the Device Configuration Software (DevCS) General Information The DevCS is a MS Windows based application that provides a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the display and control of a wide variety of configuration settings allowing the installer to adjust settings and specify functionality for a Digital Audio Control System (DACS). System File is the term used for the storage of data which represents/controls the configuration of the DACS equipment Real Time Update When an AMU50 is connected to a PC/laptop and is operating in maintenance mode, the DevCS has the ability to update the AMU50 in real time. As adjustments are made to data fields, they are programmed into the AMU50 and take effect immediately. This can be very useful for configuring a DACS on the bench. Items that are specific to or require special attention in real time update are denoted by Real Time in this manual. Note: Live mode settings are not permanently stored in the AMU50 and will be lost after the AMU50 is restarted. In order to have the settings permanently stored in the AMU50, use the Program AMU50 command from the Program menu or toolbar, described in section Selection Controls Three of the common DevCS selection controls are described below. Slider bars Option buttons Check boxes The slider can be moved by clicking on the bar and then dragging the slider with the mouse or using the Left and Right computer buttons. As the slider moves, the selected value appears to the right of the box. Note: dbr In this manual, -18 dbr means 18 db down from the rated (maximum) value. These are mutually exclusive i.e. selecting one button will automatically deselect the others. Any checked box will select the specified condition. More than one box may be checked. When the DevCS Device Configuration Software window opens on the computer, note that the mouse cursor may be positioned over the margins of the frame and 'dragged' to make the window larger or smaller. If the window is smaller than the content, a vertical scroll bar will be visible to the right of the window. Page 14

Units Most controls values can be displayed in Watts, Vrms, and dbr. It is important to note that all voltages and wattages are for reference only, and that tolerances still apply Help Buttons Help buttons are scattered throughout the DevCS pages to provide additional insight as to how certain controls work. Either hover over (see Figure 16) or click (see Figure 17) a help button to see information regarding the neighbouring controls and settings. A clicked help button will continue to display information until you re-click it. Figure 15: Help button Figure 16: Help button activated by hovering mouse over control Figure 17: Help button activated by clicking control Operational Modes DevCS introduces the operational mode feature. By default, this is set to LIMITED, which disables all operations that would allow changes to be made to a file. This mode can open a file of any personality and program a device with those settings, but the DevCS user cannot change that file s configuration or program a device with a configuration that was not previously saved. When a password is entered for a given personality, that personality can be used in FULLY ADJUSTABLE operational mode. This allows the user to create new files in that personality as well as modify existing files. For more information regarding changing the personality and operational mode, see Section Page 15

Customizing Default Settings If the factory default settings for new files do not suit your needs, you can customize them using the File > Save As Default menu option. This option will automatically save the current file settings as the defaults. The next time a new file is created, it will have these settings. If you wish to use your customized default settings on multiple computers, save a new file using the default settings, open that file on the non-customized computer, and then click File > Save As Default. Note: The only way to restore the original factory default settings is to use the Restore Factory Defaults button in the Application Settings Window (See Application Settings > General (section )).
