4 Microsoft Windows Overview lmicrosoft Windows is a graphical, multitasking environment for IBM PC compatible computers. lwindows uses a Graphical User Interface or GUI ( gooey ) that makes use of screen windows n A window is a rectangular region inside which information is displayed. nthe GUI is consistent and all windows work the same way. lthe Multitasking capability is frequently used for Task Switching. nthe background programs are idling until you switch back to them. 5 Starting Microsoft Windows lto load Microsoft Windows, begin by accessing the Windows program from the DOS prompt: n Windows runs as application program on top of DOS l1. Type cd and a space, followed by your windows directory name (usually C:\WINDOWS) nyou don t need to Change Directory if Windows is in your DOS path. l2. Press enter nyou re moved into the directory containing Windows. l 3. Type WIN and press enter nthe title screen appears, followed by Microsoft Windows. App B - Page 5

8 THE WINDOWS SCREEN lsurrounding the window on the screen is the Windows background, or Desktop. nthe Desktop is the surface that supports all of your Windows elements, just as your physical desktop supports your calendar, clock, paper files, and all of our work area. lan Icon with the name and function it represents are located in the window nicons tell you at a glance what programs are available and allow you to run programs using the mouse or the keyboard. 10 THE WINDOWS SCREEN The Window that is open is called Program Manager. lat the top of the window is a Title bar. neach Title Bar has what is called a Control button at its left end. (Control-menu box) neach Title Bar has what is called Maximize and Minimize buttons on its right end. 3These buttons displayed in the upper-right corner of the window are used to shrink the window to an icon.»if an application window is Minimized, it will not take up much space on the desktop but it will still be running in memory. 3When a Window is Maximized, you Double click on the double arrows to restore to its original size. 11 THE WINDOWS SCREEN lthe Mouse Pointer is the arrow that moves around the screen in conjunction with the mouse movements. lwindows allows you to perform almost any operation exclusively using the keyboard but it is often faster using the mouse. nwe will look at some Keyboard Shortcuts you can use to rapidly switch back and forth between applications you are using. 3e.g. NOTEPAD Editor and ITP Debug Tool App B - Page 11

13 THE WINDOWS SCREEN - Menu Bar ljust below the Program Manager s title bar is an area called the Menu Bar, containing the words nfile, Options, Window, and Help. 3We will look at the Help category. lclick on the menu s name with the mouse to open the information contained in each of these categories. npull Down menus appear nexample: Click on Help. 3 You will see five options:»contents; Search for Help On; How to use Help; Windows Tutorial; About Program Manager App B - Page 13

14 THE WINDOWS SCREEN - Menu Bar lthe first option Contents gives you a list of topics in which you can get help on. lnext is Search for Help On which let s you specify a topic you want to learn about. l How to use Help gives you information on using the help function. l Windows Tutorial accesses an on-line tutorial that allows you to learn more about how to use windows. l About Program Manager gives information such as: nwhat version of Program Manager you are using (e.g ) nwhat Mode your PC is operating in (e.g Enhanced) nhow much memory is free (e.g. - 26,778 KB Free) App B - Page 14

17 THE WINDOWS SCREEN - ICONS lin the Program Manager you will usually see two types of ICONS, n Program Groups and Program Items. lexample: Notepad, the icon looks like a notepad and is labelled Notepad. nto access Notepad double click on the Notepad Icon. 3You are immediately put into the Notepad screen and are able to edit files on any drive. nto exit and return to windows just click on file at the top left and click on exit. (or Double-Click on the Controlmenu box) 3You will automatically be returned to windows. App B - Page 17

19 WINDOWS NOTEPAD l Windows Notepad is a text editor that you can use to edit small files, such as ITP Debug Procedures. nyou can have more than one session of Notepad running at the same time so that you can cut & paste parts of one Debug Procedure to another. nusing Notepad in this way can save a lot of time in creating or modifying existing ITP Debug Procedures. 23 The Windows Clipboard lthe Windows Clipboard is a temporary storage location that is always available when you want to transfer information during a Windows session. nyou can cut or copy information from an application onto the clipboard (text or graphics) and then transfer that information from the Clipboard into other applications. 3The Clipboard Viewer is available in case you want to see what has been saved there. nusing the Clipboard is an easy way to copy and save information during a debug session. 3e.g. - You can copy the current screen using a GOLD board and save it in an application, and then compare it to the current screen on the board you are debugging. 26 Using Keyboard Commands Listed below are a few of the short cut keys: PRESS nalt / TAB nalt / F4 nalt / ENTER TO Switches to the application last used, or Switches to the next application, by pressing and holding down ALT while repeatedly pressing TAB. Quits an application, or Closes a window, or in the program Manager, quits Windows. Switches a non-windows application between running full-screen and a window (e.g. MS-DOS Prompt) App B - Page 26

27 Using Keyboard Commands Listed below are a few of the short cut keys: (Cont.) PRESS TO nalt / PRINT SCREEN Copies a picture of the active window into the Clipboard. ncontrol / C or CONTROL / INSERT ncontrol / V ncontrol / X ncontrol / Z Copies selected items and places it in the Clipboard. Pastes text from the Clipboard into an active window. Deletes selected items and places it in the Clipboard Undoes the last action. App B - Page 27
