1 Introduction In the Base Configuration Wizard you can specify essential settings for ServerView Operations Manager: You can check the conditions required for ServerView Operations Manager to work properly, see "Prerequisites step (Base Configuration Wizard)" on page 12. ServerView Operations Manager works with a server list. This list contains all known servers. o o You can specify the network entities that serve as starting points for a search operation for new servers, see "Subnets step (Base Configuration Wizard)" on page 14. You can configure the discovery process for virtual machines and virtual platforms, see "VM Discovery step (Base Configuration Wizard)" on page 16. For different authentication cases, you can store user IDs in a user/password list with the password encrypted, see "Access Control step (Base Configuration Wizard)" on page 18. You can change the settings for the directory service after the installation on Windows and Linux. The "Directory Service Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard)" on page 21 informs you how to do this. If the Event Manager is installed on the central management station, you can define the following settings: o o o General settings for alarm handling, see "Defining settings for alarm handling" on page 42. Settings for mail-forwarding, see "Defining settings for mail-forwarding" on page 42. Settings for the connectivity event, see "Defining connectivity event settings" on page 43. The ServerView Event Manager is a component of the Event Management of the ServerView Suite. After installation, this component is available via both the Windows Start Menu and ServerView Operations Manager. The Event Manager function has a user-friendly web-based graphical user interface (GUI) where you can obtain reliable, secure information about system faults quickly. You can define the results and operating states about which you want to receive alarm messages. The availability of a server in a network is a critical factor and it therefore makes sense to configure the Event Manager so that you are informed about all the operating states that could endanger server availability. Base Configuration Wizard 11
2.1 Prerequisites step (Base Configuration Wizard) 2.1 Prerequisites step (Base Configuration Wizard) Prerequisites is the first step in the wizard. This step allows you to check the requirements for Operations Manager. Make sure the following requirements are fulfilled: The SNMP service is running on the central management station and on all managed nodes. All necessary ports are available in your network and not blocked by a firewall, see also ServerView Suite Security Whitepaper. The SNMP protocol is not blocked by a firewall. The browser is using at least the displayed Java version. If this or a higher Java version is installed, the checkbox is automatically activated. The central management station is using at least the displayed Java version. Figure 2: Prerequisites step Base Configuration Wizard 12
2.2 Discovery Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) 2.2 Discovery Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) Discovery Settings is the next step in the wizard. Figure 3: Discovery Settings step The next steps allow you to handle the discovery of managed nodes: You can select the network entities that serve as starting points for a search operation in the Operations Manager's server browser (see "Subnets step (Base Configuration Wizard)" on page 14). You can enable or disable the discovery of virtual machines and virtual platforms and the timeout for it (see "VM Discovery step (Base Configuration Wizard)" on page 16). Base Configuration Wizard 13
2.2 Discovery Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) Subnets step (Base Configuration Wizard) Subnets is the next step in the wizard. All servers are displayed in the ServerView server list. You can define new objects and add these objects to the server list. This step allows you to select the network entities that serve as starting points for a search operation in the Operations Manager's server browser. Figure 4: Subnets step Subnets already recognized Displays all the subnets that have ever been used in a subnet list. Delete Use this button to delete a selected subnet. Communities used for this subnet Displays the communities which are used for the selected subnet. Ports used for virtual systems Displays the port which is used for the virtual systems. The default value is The following subnet shall be added to the list of known subnets Enter a new subnet address in the following format: x.y.z. (first three parts of an IP address). Base Configuration Wizard 14
2.2 Discovery Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) If you configure a new subnet, a search run does not start automatically. You start the search in the Server Browser property window via the Start Browsing button. You open the Server Browser window by selecting Administration/Server Browser. Communities used on this subnet The community used on this subnet. This is the community that was specified during SNMP configuration on the managed server. You can specify several communities, one after the other, separated by commas. If the community string already contains a comma, the comma must be masked with a preceding backslash "\" (e.g. commwith\,string). Bear in mind that specifying a large number of communities slows down the search process. Equally, any access with an incorrect community can cause an authentication failure alarm. Ports used for virtual systems Specify the port for the virtual systems. The default value is Apply Use this button to add a new subnet. Base Configuration Wizard 15
2.2 Discovery Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) VM Discovery step (Base Configuration Wizard) VM Discovery is the next step in the wizard. This step allows you to enable or disable the discovery of virtual machines and virtual platforms and the timeout for it. Figure 5: VM Discovery step These settings replace the parameters in the configuration files serverlistconf.xml and browserconf.xml. Timeout for the access to virtual hosts Specify the default timeout for the status polling and discovery of a host with virtualization software. The value is still weighted by the number of registered users and the virtual server type. The real timeout may therefore be greater than the default value. VM Discovery You can enable or disable the discovery of virtual machines. For the Server Browser, this setting has no effect. Base Configuration Wizard 16
2.2 Discovery Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) Yes Enables the discovery of virtual machines. The virtual machines will be discovered in the next poll interval for each host. No Disables the discovery of virtual machines. All virtual machine nodes are removed from the ServerView server list. VM Host Discovery You can enable or disable the automatic discovery for hosts with virtualization software (e.g. VMware, Hyper-V, Xen). This setting also applies to the Server Browser. In this case, the discovery is carried out for all servers in a subnet. You must restart the Server Browser after you have changed the setting. Yes Enables automatic discovery. The service performs an automatic discovery for all PRIMERGY nodes. No Disables automatic discovery. All virtual platforms on blades, PRIMEQUEST partitions, and cluster nodes will be converted to normal server nodes. Base Configuration Wizard 17
2.3 Access Control step (Base Configuration Wizard) 2.3 Access Control step (Base Configuration Wizard) Access Control is the next step in the wizard. This step allows you to create a user/password list for authentication cases. In some cases, ServerView Operations Manager requires a valid user ID in order to authenticate itself when requesting information or when executing actions on a managed server: For adding certain objects to the server list. For power management, to switch individual servers and server groups on and off from the central management station. For Threshold Manager, for monitoring servers via the central management station. The relevant user/password combinations must be stored on the managed objects with the necessary authorizations to execute these functions. The following table shows you the objects for which this valid user/password combination must be entered in the user/password list of ServerView Operations Manager. Base Configuration Wizard 18

2.5 Event Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) 2.5 Event Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) Event Management is the next step in the wizard. This step is only available if the Server View Event Manager is installed on the central management station. The Event Manager is a component of the Event Management of the ServerView Suite and works like this: An agent sends an alarm (trap) via the SNMP to the Event Manager, informing the management station that an unexpected event has occurred. An unexpected event can be an error report or a status change caused by tripping of a threshold value. Detailed information can be found in the Event Manager documentation. The next steps allow you to handle incoming alarm messages (events) and to define settings for mail-forwarding. All settings can be modified later in the ServerView Event Manager. Figure 8: Event Management step Base Configuration Wizard 22
2.5 Event Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) General Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) General Settings is the next step in the wizard. This step allows you to define general settings for alarm handling. You can define the default actions to be executed for incoming alarm messages (events): Log the alarm Have a message pop up Show the Alarm Monitor window Figure 9: General Settings step Store in OS Event Log For different error severities, the alarm is written to the operating system event-log list. Base Configuration Wizard 23
2.5 Event Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) Pop-up Message on CMS For different error severities, the alarm message is output in a (non-modal) pop-up window on the central management station. Raise Alarm Monitor window For different error severities, the Alarm Monitor window pops up in the foreground if the Alarm Monitor is already started. The Alarm Monitor is a component of the ServerView Event Manager. It displays all received alarms relating to the selected servers and server groups in the Operations Manager main window. Any combinations are possible Forward Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) Forward Settings is the next step in the wizard. This step allows you to specify whether critical alarms from any server in your server list should be forwarded via . If you activate the forwarding, you must configure the corresponding settings. With this step you define a first alarm rule. An alarm rule defines which alarms are forwarded from which servers to which destinations. You can define further settings via the Alarm Configuration component, which is a component of the ServerView Event Manager: You can configure the alarm display and alarm handling by defining alarm rules and filter rules. You can also specify, via filter rules, which alarms from which servers are to be filtered out. Base Configuration Wizard 24

2.5 Event Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) Connectivity Event Settings step (Base Configuration Wizard) Connectivity Event Settings is the next step in the wizard. This step allows you to set the parameters for the network operation of a server. You can choose to receive a trap when the status of a monitored server changes. If Receive Trap after Change is enabled, ServerView Operations Manager sends itself the following trap: If the server can be monitored: Server changed state (The server <server name> has changed its state to snmpok or OK) If the server cannot be monitored: Server changed state (The server <server name> has changed its state to not manageable) Figure 11: Connectivity Event Settings step Receive Trap after Change Enables/disables the sending of a trap when one of the monitored servers changes its connectivity status. Base Configuration Wizard 27
2.5 Event Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) Defer Trap for Number of Poll Intervals Specifies for how many poll intervals the trap is to be deferred. Default Default setting. A connectivity trap will be sent after one poll interval. Special User-defined. You specify the number of poll intervals. A connectivity trap will only be sent after this number of poll intervals. If a server changes from manageable to not manageable, a trap will only be sent after the server has remained not manageable for the specified number of poll intervals. Check Status on Startup If Check Status on Startup is selected, ServerView Operations Manager sends a trap if the connectivity status of the monitored server is changed on startup of the ServerView management console. This check should be used sparingly, because it can cause a lot of traps whenever you start ServerView Operations Manager with a list of many monitored servers which have changed their connectivity status. By default, Check Status on Startup is not selected. Base Configuration Wizard 28
2.6 Update Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) 2.6 Update Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) Update Management is the next step in the wizard. This step is only available if the Server View Update Manager is installed on the central management station. The Update Manager is a component of the Update Management of the ServerView Suite. The Update Manager manages online updates for the hardware and software components of PRIMERGY servers. The Update Manager uses a central update repository which contains all update packages for the servers. Detailed information can be found in the Update Management documentation. This step allows you to configure whether the update repository should be updated automatically. You can also start the Configuration wizard, which is also a component of the Update Management. 34 2.8 Threshold Management step (Base Configuration Wizard) If the threshold management is deactivated, the following Operations Manager activities will be switched off: Threshold data and status are no longer collected from the managed servers and no configuration synchronization is performed. SNMP threshold traps will be ignored by Operations Manager. The Servers and Templates buttons in the navigation area on the left are disabled. IMPORTANT 1. This does not mean that, if the sending of SNMP traps is deactivated on the agent side, Operations Manager will ignore only these traps. In order to fully deactivate threshold traps, please select the target servers in the server list of the Threshold Manager and then click Deactivate. Consider configuring a valid system user account in SVOM -> Administration -> Users/Passwords before proceeding. Note that the Servers and Templates buttons in the navigation area on the left will be disabled as soon as the threshold management is deactivated. So if you want to deactivate the sending of SNMP traps on the agent side, please do so before deactivating the threshold management. CAUTION This will deactivate the sending of SNMP traps on the agent side for all Operations Manager instances. It is currently not possible to disable the sending of SNMP traps for specific Operations Manager instances. 2. Note that the configuration change (server and/or template parameters, active status for server) does not occur immediately after you click Apply. It is done by the service running in background during the regular polling task, so please wait up to ten minutes until the changes you have made reach the affected servers. Base Configuration Wizard 42
3.3 Defining settings for ServerView Operations Manager Defining connectivity event settings You can configure ServerView Operations Manager to sent itself a trap if one of the monitored servers changed its connectivity status, for example from manageable to not manageable. You can specify for how many poll intervals this trap is to be deferred. Furthermore you can activate that ServerView Operations Manager sends a trap if the connectivity status of the monitored server is changed on startup of the ServerView management console. 1. In the work area on the left, switch to the Connectivity Event Settings step. 2. Activate Receive Trap after Change to enable the sending of a trap when one of the monitored servers changes its connectivity status. 3. Click Default if you want to get a connectivity trap after one poll interval or click Special to specify for how many poll intervals the trap is to be deferred. If a server changes from manageable to not manageable, a trap will only be sent after the server has remained not manageable for the specified number of poll intervals. 4. Activate Check Status on Startup. Then ServerView Operations Manager sends a trap if the connectivity status of the monitored server is changed on startup of the ServerView management console. This check should be used sparingly, because it can cause a lot of traps whenever you start ServerView Operations Manager with a list of many monitored servers which have changed their connectivity status. Base Configuration Wizard 43

Under Journalize Log Data specify whether log files are to be saved. Base Configuration Wizard 44
