5 1 Introduction The Performance Manager is the element of the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite used to monitor the performance of specific server components. Its operation is rule-based, whereby the centrally created rules can be executed on any number of servers. The Performance Manager comes as part of ServerView Operations Manager. The Performance Manager enables PRIMERGY servers to be monitored via a convenient user interface. The performance management tasks are carried out via dialog boxes and tabs: Collecting performance and capacity-utilization data. Presenting performance and utilization data in standardized form. Continual monitoring of performance and utilization data. Informative reports are therefore essential for continual monitoring. These recordings can be documented over a longer period. The Performance Manager allows you to define and create reports. Reports can be clearly displayed in a choice of formats. Report data can also be exported and stored in a file in CSV format. Access to the Performance Manager for monitoring the server occurs via resources. A resource is the set of all objects of one type. The resource Filesystem is the set of all file systems of the server. An object from this set is known as an instance. An instance of the resource is therefore an element of this set, for example the instance Filesystem 1. All instances are defined via objects in a MIB. The use of objects contained in MIBs allows the standardized presentation of all hardware and software components of a server in a management environment. The agents access the objects contained in the MIB. The Performance Manager monitors various server resources over a longer period. By way of reports, selected values are saved at regular intervals over a defined period and evaluated in graphical form. When you install the Performance Manager, a repository is also automatically installed, to which you can save all user-defined settings for the reports and report sets and, from there, open them for editing. ServerView Performance Manager 5

6 Changes from the previous version Introduction I Please note the following: The Performance Manager can be installed on various management stations. If multiple Performance Managers access the same server, the server settings can be overwritten. 1.1 Changes from the previous version This edition is valid for the Performance Manager of ServerView Operations Manager V4.90 and replaces the online manual: Performance Manager - ServerView V4.4, Edition March This manual has been updated to reflect the latest software status and offers the following new features: As of ServerView Operations Manager V4.90, threshold monitoring is no longer performed via the Performance Manager, but via the ServerView Threshold Manager (Event Management Threshold Manager). The description of the Performance Manager has been adjusted to reflect the reduced functional scope. The Performance Manager can be launched either via the start page of ServerView Operations Manager or via the menu bar (Monitoring Performance Manager). The description in section Performance Manager starten on page 9 has been updated accordingly. The old section PRIMERGY ServerView Suite documentation, which gave a brief overview of the available documents on the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite, is now a separate document on the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite DVD 2 and therefore no longer features in this manual. 6 ServerView Performance Manager

7 Introduction Notational conventions 1.2 Notational conventions The following notational conventions are used in this manual: V Caution I This symbol points out hazards that can lead to personal injury, loss of data or damage to equipment. This symbol highlights important information and tips. Ê italic fixed font semi-bold fixed font [Key symbols] Table 1: Notational conventions This symbol refers to a step that you must carry out in order to continue with the procedure. Commands, menu items, names of buttons, options, variables, file names and path names are shown in italics in descriptive text. System outputs are indicated using a fixed font. Commands to be entered via the keyboard are written in a semi-bold fixed font. Keys are shown according to their representation on the keyboard. If uppercase letters are to be entered explicitly, then the Shift key is shown, e.g. [SHIFT] - [A] for A. If two keys need to be pressed at the same time, this is shown by placing a hyphen between the two key symbols. References to text or sections of text in this manual are shown with the chapter or section heading and the page on which that chapter or section begins. Screen outputs Please note that the screen output is dependent in part on the system used and therefore some details may not correspond exactly to the output you will see on your system. You may also see system-dependent differences in the menu items available. ServerView Performance Manager 7

27 3 Reports The report functions enable long-term monitoring of the server. Selected resources can be measured at regular intervals over a specific period, saved, and evaluated in graphical form. Especially with only sporadic performance bottlenecks, you thus have the possibility of remedying the problem, for example by upgrading with an extra processor or more hard-disk space, installing a faster network module, or similar measures. Based on reports, you can define which resources of a server are logged for monitoring. To activate the logging on a server, you must create a report, assign it to a report set, and then apply the report set to a server. The report set is then automatically active, i.e. the logging is started on the server based on the values set. 3.1 Creating new reports Before you can start a report, you must specify which resource you want to monitor. You can also define the time intervals at which these resources are to be recorded. You specify the logging parameters via the Report tab.
