3 Overview: The MSDN Academic Alliance Software access application provides students with access to certain Microsoft software packages and product keys, depending on their UCT courses which they are registered for. This guide contains 11 pages. System requirements: The software access application itself as well the available packages requires the following: Windows 7 or later A broadband connection or mobile broadband connection (data charges may apply) to download the software. UCT username and password. Installing the MSDN AA software access application: Please visit to install the latest version of the software access application. If you experience issues installing or accessing the software access application please commercehelpdesk@uct.ac.za with the subject MSDN Access. Accessing the software packages and product keys: 1) Open the MSDN AA Software Access application from either the start menu or desktop shortcut. Please read the overview and click next. 4 2) Once you have read through the terms and conditions, tick the I agree to the above terms and conditions to proceed to the next step. 3) Login into the system using you UCT username and password. COMMERCE IT MSDN AA Software Access Compiled by Aman Parker 4

5 4) After successfully logging in, the application will gather some information about your computer and will present you with the screens below. On the PC and Student enrolment screen please provide your contact number (including international dialling code) as well as the country that you reside in. 6 5) After you have completed the above, a screen with the available software packages will be displayed. In order to have a product key issued to you, select a software package from the list and click Request licence key. Once a key has been issued, you will see it in the Licence Key column. Please note that this key allows you to install only one copy of the software on your computer for academic purposes. COMMERCE IT MSDN AA Software Access Compiled by Aman Parker 6

7 6) You can right click on the selected software package to copy the product key to your computers clipboard. You can then paste it into the installation wizard. Downloading the Installation files To begin downloading the software please click Download installer /ISO button. Depending your internet connection this could take between 20 minutes or more. When the download prompt appears click SAVE and select a location to save the software. Wait for the download to complete. COMMERCE IT MSDN AA Software Access Compiled by Aman Parker 7

8 Checking your version of Windows (32 Bit or 64 Bit) In order to check your version of Windows you will require please follow the steps below: On windows 7 or 8 find the My Computer icon from either the start menu or the desktop. For Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 search for This PC. Right click the icon and click properties. Look at the system type information as illustrated below, to see which version you will need to download. Please note that if you have Microsoft office installed, the companion products, MS Project and MS vision will require to you install the same platform version (i.e. 32 bit or 64 bit) that office has installed. 9 Installing the software package 1) Once the download has completed, browse to the location of the downloaded file. For computers running - Windows 7 1.) Visit and download the English version of WinRAR. You can download either the 32 bit or 64 bit version. If you have a 64 bit version of Windows. 2.) Once the setup.exe file has been downloaded, follow the installation wizard and leave all the default settings ticked. Click OK on any boxes that is required to complete installation of WinRAR. 3.) Once the installation has completed, go to the location of the ISO file and right click the file. You should now see additional WinRAR options. 10 4.) Once the extraction has completed, you should now see the extracted folder alongside the.iso file. Double click the extracted folder to view the installation files. 5.) Once in the folder, browse to the setup.exe file, right click the setup.exe and select Run as Administrator. Start the installation and follow the installation wizard through to the end. Once the wizard completed the installation launch the software from the start menu, in this case MS project COMMERCE IT MSDN AA Software Access Compiled by Aman Parker 10

11 2) One the software has launched, create a new document. Beneath the office ribbon bar you will see an activation notice, click activate as illustrated below. 3) On the activation box click activate with a product key. 12 5) You have now successfully installed and activated Microsoft Project For computers running - Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 1.) Right click on the downloaded.iso file and select Mount. 6) Once you have clicked Mount, go to This PC and look for the newly created virtual DVD drive. 13 7) Browse to the setup.exe file, right click the setup.exe and select Run as Administrator. Start the installation and follow the installation wizard through to the end.
