Introduction 1 5 Introduction The Syn-Apps Desktop Notification Client allows notifications from SA-Announce to be instantly received on personal computers anywhere on the network. After the Desktop Notification Client is installed on a desktop computer, the desktop computer becomes an available endpoint for SA-Announce notifications. The desktop computer also becomes available for SA-Announce group assignment, similar to other devices on the network. SA-Announce notifications that the client can receive include: Available DNC Notifications received from SA-Announce Emergency Alerts Amber Alerts Weather Alerts Live Audio (Normal) Prerecorded Audio (Record N Play) Text Messages Polls Images The Desktop Notification Client is also capable of initiating SA-Announce notifications such as Emergency Alerts. This allows desktop users to initiate notifications from there desktop computer. 1.1 Features Additional DNC Features include: Additional DNC Features Customizable notification window Automated setup including DHCP support Provides notification history Allows Emergency Alerts, Text Messages, Images, and Audio notifications to be initiated from the DNC Provides a user lockout mechanism for enhanced security Password protection Easily access the SA-Announce user interface directly from the DNC application. The SAAnnounce server will need unrestricted access to the DNC on this port. Voice Ports: The DNC RTP port range will need to be accessible by SA-Announce ( ). Multicast: The DNC will need to be connected to a multicast enabled network if SA-Announce is configured for multicast.

8 2.2 Desktop Notification Client Setup Wizard This section describes the setup program used to install the Desktop Notification Client on user machines. Note the following command line options that may be useful when mass deploying the client: /SILENT, /VERYSILENT /AnnounceServer=<SAAnnounce Server IP Address> Instructs Setup to be silent or very silent. When Setup is silent the wizard and the background window are not displayed but the installation progress window is. When a setup is very silent the installation progress window is not displayed. Instructs Setup to configure the desktp notification client with the SA-Announce IP Address given (IE / AnnounceServer= ). 11 Configuration Part 3

12 3 Desktop Notification Client Configuration The Desktop Notification Client can be configured in two ways. The most convenient way to configure the Desktop Notification Client is to use Automatic Configuration where configuration is performed on the SA-Announce server and propagates to all of the Desktop Notification Clients on your network. This creates a single, secure, centralized location for provisioning the Desktop Notification Clients on your network. Automatic Configuration requires all of the Desktop Notification Clients to have the same configuration settings. The other configuration option is to perform a Manual Configuration on each Desktop Notification Client. This is less convenient to manage, but allows for unique customization of each Desktop Notification Client. 3.1 Automatic Configuration The Desktop Notification Client offers the ability for SA-Announce to automatically configure the Desktop Notification Client. When the Desktop Notification Client runs for the first time, it will attempt to retrieve configuration parameters from the SA-Announce server automatically. The SA-Announce server becomes a central location for configuring all of the Desktop Notification Clients in your network. There are two requirements for Automatic Configuration: 1. The IP Address of SA Announce must be made available to the Desktop Notification Client 2. An administrator must define configuration parameters for the Desktop Notification Clients using the SA-Announce web interface SA-Announce IP Address To provide the SA-Announce IP Address to the Desktop Notification Client there are three options: 1. DHCP - A DHCP server may be configured to serve up the SA-Announce IP Address using Option-72. The Desktop Notification Client will automatically poll the DHCP server for the SA-Announce IP address on startup. Using this option makes configuration completely automatic. When the Desktop Notification Client first starts up, it will obtain the SA-Announce IP address from the DHCP server and then register with SA-Announce automatically. 2. Installation - During installation of the Desktop Notification Client, the installer allows for the SAAnnounce IP address to be specified on the command line. An administrator can use this feature to write an install script that includes the SA-Announce IP Address. This enables an administrator to mass deploy the Desktop Notification Client with the SA-Announce IP address. Please see Installation -> Setup Wizard for more details on using the command line option. 3. Manual - After installation, a user can visit the Settings Page and enter the IP Address of SAAnnounce manually. Once the Desktop Notification Client connects to SA-Announce, SA-Announce will then be capable of sending configuration parameters to the Desktop Notification Client. This approach is not preferred because it involves a manual step of entering the IP Address. Configuration Using SA-Announce Web Interface All of the settings specified on the Settings Page can be configured using the SA-Announce web

Configuration 13 interface by visiting the "Services"->"Broadcast Services"->"Advanced" tab as shown below. Using the SA-Announce web interface, an administrator can update the Desktop Notification Client settings at any time. The Desktop Notification Client does not need to be restarted to get the new settings. The SA-Announce server dynamically pushes the settings to the Desktop Notification Client automatically on a predefined interval. NOTE: See the SA-Announce help documentation for more details using the SA-Announce web interface.

Desktop Notification Client Manual Configuration The Settings Page allows a local user to manually configure the settings of the Desktop Notification Client. However, it is recommended to use Automatic Configuration for making Desktop Notification Client configuration easy, secure, centralized and concurrent across all Desktop Notification Clients. However, in some cases you may still wish to configure the settings manually. Unique Settings Manual configuration is required if each Desktop Notification Client installation is to have unique settings. If an administrator wishes to allow individual users the ability to customize the behavior of the Desktop Notification Client when it receives notifications, then configuration must be performed manually and individually on each Desktop Notification Client. Automatic Setup requires all of the Desktop Notification Clients to be configured the same. IP Restraints Manual configuration is required when the Desktop Notification Client cannot automatically detect the IP address of SA-Announce. The Desktop Notification Client will be unable to automatically detect the IP address if DHCP is not enabled or if the IP address was not specified during installation (Please see Automatic Configuration for more details). In either case, a user must manually enter the IP address of the SA-Announce on the Settings Page. NOTE: Once the Desktop Notification Client can communicate with SA-Announce, SAAnnounce may begin sending configuration parameters to the Desktop Notification Client automatically. For details on how to manually configure the Desktop Notification Client please visit the Settings Page.

Depending on the type of notification received, the notification window will use the corresponding template. The templates and their corresponding notification type are as follows: File Notification Type The Desktop Notification Client has default templates for each of the nine notification types. An administrator can replace these with their own custom templates by placing custom templates on the SA-Announce Server. The Desktop Notification Client will automatically download these the next time it is restarted. By using the SA-Announce Server to publish the templates, all of the Desktop Notification Clients in the network can be upgraded from a single location. NOTE: Only the content from the notification will change when a new notification window is displayed. The look and feel will be the same because the notification window is using the same template each time.
