Chapter 1: Introduction About VMAX Cloud Edition EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition is a complete solution for customers looking to deliver IT in an as-a-service model. It is targeted for cloud providers, enterprise, and mid-market customers looking to provide cloud capabilities. VMAX Cloud Edition provides cloud storage in predefined packages based on capacity and performance. Define the amount of storage you need, and Cloud Edition creates it for you. VMAX Cloud Edition is pre-engineered and does not require storage architects to create hardware and software configurations. Using the VMAX Cloud Edition Portal, cloud providers and their tenants control all aspects of their cloud storage, including user maintenance, customization, monitoring, analysis, and more. VMAX Cloud Edition delivers: Secure Multi-tenancy Role-based access control determines the level of access for the cloud provider and tenants. Tenant Self-Service VMAX Cloud Edition enables the delegation of day-to-day management tasks such as storage provisioning and deprovisioning to the tenants, reducing cloud provider intervention, and allowing cloud providers to focus their energy elsewhere. VMAX Cloud Edition Portal Management interface for cloud providers and tenants. The VMAX Cloud Edition Portal manages multiple instances of VMAX Cloud Edition. Service Automation Users submit portal requests through the VMAX Cloud Edition Portal hosted by EMC to manage their storage assets. Interfaces are simplified and abstracted for tenant use. VMAX Cloud Edition automatically takes these logical requests and intelligently translates them into specific resource allocation requests based on EMC-proven best practices, which are then executed against specific storage assets to fulfill the request. Reporting, trending, and monitoring capabilities Usage reports are tenant-based to facilitate chargeback and to allow customization of service levels VMAX Cloud Edition Storage Service Catalog Collection of service levels from which customers can choose. The service levels in a Cloud Edition Service Catalog are presented in a way that is easily understandable, and users can choose to provision from the service level that best matches their requirements and demands. Once a customer selects a service level, delivery of the service level is automated. Every service level is enterprise-class whether you select bronze, silver, gold, platinum, or diamond. REST-API Contains built-in support for a Representational State Transfer (REST) API. The REST API allows users to design their own user interface and workflows 16 VMAX Cloud Edition Product and User Guide

Chapter 1: Introduction Environment overview The EMC Symmetrix VMAX Cloud Edition consists of a VMAX Cloud Edition server driving a Symmetrix VMAX system at the customer site. This configuration connects to the EMC Data Center over a virtual private network (VPN) connection. The system is administered and controlled at the cloud provider site using the VMAX Cloud Edition Portal. VMAX Cloud Edition is comprised of components both at the cloud provider s datacenter, as well as an EMC Data Center. EMC configures all hardware components for the cloud provider. Customer datacenter EMC Data Center Figure 1: VMAX Cloud Edition environment At the customer site, each Symmetrix VMAX system collects configuration information that is captured by the VMAX Cloud Edition Appliance Server. The VMAX Cloud Edition Appliance Server communicates with the EMC Data Center through a secure HTTPS connection. If errors occur, the captured information is retained for later retransmission attempts. The VMAX Cloud Edition Portal provides secure interaction between cloud providers and EMC. The portal primarily interacts with the coordinator, which in turn interacts with the data warehouse. The data warehouse contains configuration and usage information. Scalability VMAX Cloud Edition is a highly scalable solution, currently supporting up to 10 Symmetrix VMAX systems per VMAX Cloud Edition appliance cluster. Each Symmetrix VMAX system connects using the customer s storage area network (SAN). The following illustration is an example of a solution based on two VMAX Cloud Editions using three Symmetrix VMAX systems, each with dual paths from the cloud provider s SAN. 19 Chapter 1: Introduction Hardware components Symmetrix volumes Physical location Redundancy architecture The hardware components and appliances that are central to VMAX Cloud Edition are: Symmetrix VMAX 10K system The VMAX 10K storage system provides high-end virtual storage capabilities. VMAX 10K delivers scalable performance, simplified management and provisioning, automated service leveling, and the ability to simultaneously support numerous virtual machines. VMAX Cloud Edition appliances The VMAX Cloud Edition software/services running on the VMAX Cloud Edition appliances are in an active-passive mode. The pair of appliances provide the connectivity to the cloud provider LAN and Fibre Channel connectivity to the Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems. They are physically installed in a separate rack provided by the customer or EMC. Each appliance is capable of providing the computing and memory resources required by the VMAX Cloud Edition software. The software manages anywhere from one to ten Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems. For VMAX Cloud Edition arrays that support the VMAX Cloud Edition appliance, additional dedicated capacity is shipped with the system for the purpose of providing datastore storage for the appliance. A VMAX Cloud Edition solution can consist of up to 10 Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems that reside in the cloud provider datacenter. The VMAX Cloud Edition appliances are integrated into the VMAX array. The VMAX Cloud Edition appliances reside in a customer-supplied rack. Each VMAX Cloud Edition appliance can support up to ten Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems. The main focus areas surrounding redundancy are Ethernet connectivity, fibre channel (FC) connectivity, and the VMAX Cloud Edition appliances. The desired redundancy model is achieved by using redundant VMAX Cloud Edition appliances and redundant LANs and SANs at the cloud provider data center. The primary VMAX Cloud Edition appliance server 1 hosts the Automation Engine, Collector, and Solutions Enabler VMs. The secondary VMAX Cloud Edition appliance server 2 hosts the Virtualization Manager that manages the pair of appliance hosts. Each VMAX Cloud Edition appliance has two 8GB FC ports that are cross-connected to the redundant SANs where the cloud provider has redundant SANs. Also, each VMAX Cloud Edition appliance will have two 1GB Ethernet ports that are cross-connected to the redundant LANs, if the cloud provider has redundant LANs. Although there are a pair of VMAX Cloud Edition appliances forming a fully redundant environment, each performs different tasks while running under normal operation. In the event of a failure, the collector running on the failed appliance automatically moves to the redundant appliance. The following illustration provides an overview of the redundancy architecture. Hardware components 19

Chapter 1: Introduction Figure 3: Redundancy architecture 20 VMAX Cloud Edition Product and User Guide

Chapter 1: Introduction Connectivity Two types of connectivity are described in this section: Ethernet connectivity to the local LAN Fibre Channel connectivity to the SAN Ethernet connectivity Ethernet connectivity is required for some of the virtual machines to communicate with the EMC Data Center through the VPN. Each server is configured with redundant 1 GB Ethernet ports. It is recommended that the cloud provider data center have redundant LANs so that the network interface cards (NICs) can be cross-connected, as shown in the following figure. Figure 4: Ethernet connectivity Fibre Channel connectivity Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity is an important aspect of the VMAX Cloud Edition solution.the Fibre Channel connections required for VMAX Cloud Edition are shown in the following figure. The Fibre Channel connections required for VMAX Cloud Edition provide redundant paths for High Availability. In addition to the connections shown, which are for control paths, fibre connections are required between the Symmetrix VMAX system and the SAN switch for data path connectivity. Two Symmetrix VMAX ports are for management and up to 16 ports per Symmetrix VMAX engine are for I/O, depending on the Service Level purchased. It is recommended that the customer data center consist of redundant SANs for high availability. Each VMAX Cloud Edition appliance server has redundant FC HBA ports that enable crossconnection between the server HBA ports and the SAN. A single SAN is not supported Connectivity 21

Chapter 1: Introduction Host connectivity Figure 5: Fibre Channel connectivity The customer will have a total of ports available for host connectivity, depending on the size of the VMAX. EMC- proven best practice is to connect to all available ports. VPN requirements The VMAX Cloud Edition solution requires a GigE VPN connection from the VMAX Cloud Edition appliance to the EMC s Data Center providing communication without risk to the cloud provider network. Both collected data and change automation tasks are passed over connections initiated by the virtual appliances at the cloud provider data center at regular intervals. 22 VMAX Cloud Edition Product and User Guide

Chapter 1: Introduction VMAX Cloud Edition Portal VMAX Cloud Edition provides a self-service, web-based portal to facilitate storage management. It serves as the central location from which cloud providers and their tenants view and manage their resources. Role-based access controls are used determine access to resources. The following table introduces the three major sections of the portal. Section Home Storage Function By default, this menu item opens the provisioning page; however, you can change this default behavior by changing the Home Page selection in the System Preference page. 25 Chapter 1: Introduction Multi-tenancy support VMAX Cloud Edition provides the ability for tenants to perform self-service management actions by creating service requests using a web-based portal. The VMAX Cloud Edition Portal supports the ability to define hierarchical structures, known as tenancies, for cloud providers and tenants. Tenants can view reports and meter data for their partition. From this view, tenants can view their own service requests and manage their allocated resources. Since it is possible for a tenant to have more than one user, a tenant is represented by a security partition. Multiple users can be associated with a partition, with the level of access for each user represented by a set of roles. Note the following roles and accessibility: Only cloud provider level users have visibility and control of assets at the array and data center levels, along with the ability to view reports on all service requests, usage metering, trends, and forecasts. SP administrator can create other users in the system. Tenant administrators can create other users within that tenancy. View-only users can access reporting, trending, and service level information. Provisioning users can view and submit service requests. Multi-tenancy support 25

Chapter 1: Introduction Security VMAX Cloud Edition provides Cloud Providers and Tenants with controls for providing a secure environment. User authorization User authorization is a tool for restricting the operations users can perform and the pages they can view in the VMAX Cloud Edition portal. SP Administrators create and map users to specific roles, which determine the operations and pages the user can perform/view on the portal. The following table lists the operations supported with each role. Table 1: Role/Supported operations Role Supported operations SP Admin Perform read-only or view operations. 29 Chapter 1: Introduction Role Supported operations Modify a user's roles. Emulate tenants. Symmetrix Data at Rest Encryption Secure communication Symmetrix Data at Rest Encryption (D@RE) provides hardware-based, on-array, back-end encryption for Symmetrix arrays by using Back End Fibre Channel I/O modules with encryption, validated for FIPS Level 1, that incorporate XTS 256-bit data-at-rest encryption. These modules encrypt and decrypt data as it is being written to or read from disk, thus protecting your information from unauthorized access even when disk drives are removed from the array. For the most up-to-date information on qualified interoperability with the RSA Key Manager Appliance, consult the ESM Support Matrix, available through E-Lab. VMAX Cloud Edition uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol to enable access from the portal and API. All communication between the VMAX Cloud Edition appliances and the EMC Data Center are also over secured channel. The browser/api clients and the Cloud Edition Servers communicate over an authenticated, encrypted connection. When a client attempts to connect with the servers, the endpoints exchange a handshake in which they both identify their security expectations and capabilities. If their security capabilities are the same, the two will establish a session. If their security capabilities are different, either the client or the server will reject the session. Security 29

Chapter 1: Introduction Storage provisioning Service catalog Service levels The VMAX Cloud Edition excels at delivering enterprise-class storage services to power your as-aservice delivery. It combines the power of EMC VMAX, the simplicity of a self-service portal, RESTful APIs, and the intelligence of automated provisioning. Automated provisioning offers cloud providers and customers a broad range of choices in world-class storage services. Trusted multi-tenancy and built-in chargeback reporting streamline operations and accelerate delivery of storage services. Cloud providers, enterprise and mid-level customers use the VMAX Edition Portal to interact with a service catalog and enter requests to provision, modify, and release storage. Requests for change are stored at EMC's data warehouse. Requests go through an evaluation and approval process before being available at the cloud provider site. Simple building blocks for storage provisioning are used to automatically assign best practices drive mix and policies for each service level. All you need to do is choose the service level. VMAX Cloud Edition matches cloud provider and tenant requirements to service delivery purchase. The preengineered service levels give you the broadest range of choice in a single infrastructure. The selfservice portal automates provisioning, data collection utilization and chargeback reporting on tenant activity. VMAX Cloud Edition allows customers to provision through the automation engine, and optimize performance by changing service level choices. Automation allows cloud providers to save time and operational costs when responding to management service level requests. The service catalog is created from pre-engineered service level definitions and configurations that establish how VMAX Cloud Edition is purchased and how services are provided and consumed by clients. VMAX Cloud Edition supplies cloud providers with a predefined service catalog, providing the option for a turn-key catalog that can be used without the need for making changes. The cloud provider can, however, customize the attributes and names of the service levels in the catalog. The VMAX Cloud Edition service catalog provides both storage and performance to tenants. Tenants select their service package based on their needs of both storage and performance. Service levels determine the policy that allocates storage to different types of drives for various levels of capacity and performance. Predefined settings make it easy for cloud providers to provision the right amount of storage for tenants. They are able to create tenant pricing for service based on the catalog. Cloud providers can change the naming convention and attributes of the service bands when presenting them to their tenants. Cloud providers also control the service levels a tenant can access. Service levels display in the service catalog with an icon that enables tenants to quickly determine the capacity and performance associated with the service level. The following figure displays the icons for service levels containing non-dare service bands: 30 VMAX Cloud Edition Product and User Guide

Chapter 1: Introduction Figure 6: Service level icons (non-dare service bands) The following figure displays the icons for service levels containing DARE service bands. For more information on DARE, refer to Security on page 26 Figure 7: Service level icons (DARE enabled service bands) Storage provisioning 31

Chapter 1: Introduction Oversubscription VMAX Cloud Edition enables cloud providers to oversubscribe the provisionable capacity of their service levels. This effectively allows them to meet their tenants' storage needs without having to purchase enough physical drives to fully allocate all the space represented by their service levels. The amount by which a service level can be oversubscribed is controlled by the Max Provision % attribute. By default this attribute is set to 100 percent, meaning oversubscription is disabled for the service level, in which case the maximum provisionable capacity of the service level is 100 percent of its physical capacity. To enable oversubscription for a service level, set its Max Provision % attribute to a value greater than 100 percent and less than 1000 percent. For example, setting this attribute to 200 percent means that up to 200 percent of the service level's physical capacity is available for use. Once this value is reached, all additional provisioning requests will fail and existing provisioned capacity will no longer work. The Max Provision % attribute is set when creating and editing service levels. For instructions, refer to Creating service level names on page 55 and Editing service levels on page 56. The capacity utilization report is updated every 24 hours to track oversubscription usage. For more information, refer to Utilization reporting on page VMAX Cloud Edition Product and User Guide

Chapter 1: Introduction Reporting and utilization Reporting Dashboard VMAX Cloud Edition supports the ability for cloud providers to generate metered usage reports for tenants based on the amount of consumed capacity per service level and availability of services offered. The usage report provides tenant-level usage data to enable cloud providers to provide chargeback for their tenants. Reports are available on a regular basis or on request. Usage can also be tracked, and service levels can be adjusted or created based on usage. The Reporting Dashboard provides information on all the cloud provider sites, including their configured and allocated storage, their overall utilization, and the service levels deployed at each site. The following illustration provides an example of the Reporting Dashboard. Utilization report Figure 8: Reporting Dashboard VMAX Cloud Edition provides a utilization report, which can help facilitate chargeback/billing. The following illustration shows an example of a utilization report on the VMAX Cloud Edition Portal. Reporting and utilization 33

Chapter 1: Introduction REST API VMAX Cloud Edition contains built-in support for a Representational State Transfer (REST) API. The REST API allows users to design their own user interface and workflows. The API framework exposes logical storage and associated infrastructure through simple RESTful APIs. The API can be used in any of the programming environments that support standard REST clients. The REST API abstracts the storage and associated resources in a user-friendly way, and manages resources without requiring knowledge of the underlying technology. It simplifies provisioning, administration, and reporting (usage) tasks without any additional tools or libraries. REST API 35
