Freedom Universal Keyboard BlackBerry Installation Guide
Thank you for purchasing a Freedom Universal Keyboard In addition to the details contained in the enclosed Quick Start Guide and in the user manual below the follow information will be useful when setting up your Freedom Universal Keyboard. These instructions are for BlackBerry s only. 1) The three simple steps to using your keyboard are: 1. Download and install the drivers 2. Unlock the Driver 3. Connect the keyboard 2) There are TWO UNIQUE codes provided with each keyboard. This is so that you can register TWO devices to use with your keyboard. If you require additional unique codes please contact support via these will be provided free of charge. 3) The UNIQUE codes supplied are NOT your UNLOCK codes. 4) When turning the keyboard on please select either of the following: 1. BlackBerry devices - SPP Mode (switch to the left) 2. All other devices - HID Mode (switch to the right) 5) BlackBerry devices may require a change to be made to the Keystroke Injection setting. 6) BlackBerry devices connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server may require permissions from the BES administrator to change the Keystroke Injector setting on the device (details on the BES settings can also be found on 7) When registering for your Unlock code you may need to enable cookies for the webpage. If the cookies are being blocked by your internet browser you will get a message saying the code has already been used. More information is found on the registration site. BlackBerry Keys & Terminology: Red: Push to Select Green: Push to Open Menu Blue: Push to go Back (Scroll wheel BlackBerry s use the scroll wheel press to both open menus and select items)
Installing the Drivers Via the OTA website The easiest way to install the drivers on your BlackBerry is via the OTA (over the air) website. For the link to the PC installation packages please see the last page of this user guide. 1) Open the internet browser on your BlackBerry and go to 2) The website will detect that you have a BlackBerry and either give you the link to Download Driver or give you choice of two drivers to download (4.1 and 4.2). Select the link which matches the system version of your BlackBerry (4.2 will work with all 4.2 and upwards devices including 4.3 BlackBerry s). Note: If you are unsure of which version your BlackBerry is running you can find out by going to Options>About on your BlackBerry. 3) Click the Download Button: 4) Once the drivers are installed click the OK button and exit the browser application. You will now see a new icon on your application menu for Bluetooth Keyboard.
Changing the Keystroke Injection/Input Simulation Permissions. In order for the keyboard to be able to send data to the BlackBerry it needs to be able to use part of the BlackBerry called Keystroke Injection on older BlackBerrys and Input Simulation on the newer models. All BlackBerry s running 4.2 or above (and some running 4.1) have keystroke injection/input simulation blocked by default for all applications, you will need to change the permissions to allow the keyboard to send keypress data to the BlackBerry. The permission changes will only be applied to the driver software. 1) From the Blackberry main menu select Options. (May also be called settings depending on what theme you have installed). 2) From the list select Advanced Options. 3) From the list select Applications. 4) Highlight BlackBerry 4.X Core Applications (X being 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 depending on your BlackBerry)
5) Press the Menu button and select Modules. 6) From the list highlight the btkbd4x module (X being 1 or 2 depending on what version you installed). 7) Press the Menu button and select Edit Permissions. 8) Scroll down once to highlight the Interactions line. 9) Press the Menu button and select Expand.
10) Scroll down to Keystroke Injection or Input Simulation and press select. 11) From the list select Allow. *If you do not have the option to set this to Allow you may be connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. In this case you will need to contact your BES Administrator to create a software configuration for you. (For instructions on making the changes to a BES please visit **Updating to a more recent OS may also unlock this option. 12) Press the back button to exit and when asked select Save.
Unlocking the drivers. When you first run the Bluetooth Keyboard application you will be required to enter an Unlock Code and will be shown a Device Code which is unique to your BlackBerry. To generate your unlock code you will need to visit and fill out the verification form. This will then generate the unlock code for you which you enter on your BlackBerry. 1) From the main application menu of your BlackBerry run the Bluetooth Keyboard software. You will be shown a screen similar to the one below. Make a note of the device code (this is CASE SENSITIVE and can contain letters and/or numbers). 2) From a PC go to and fill out the details on the form. You can use either of the unique codes from the back of your quick start guide. Please ensure you enter the device code exactly as it is shown on the screen of your BlackBerry.
3) When you click the Unlock Now button you will be taken to the confirmation page. Check the details in the form at the bottom of the page are correct and then click Confirm Details. Note: If there is nothing showing in the bottom form (all fields are blank) then your internet browser is blocking the information from being sent to the server. If this is the case please refer to the link below on how to allow cookies for the website. d=71 4) Once you have been clicked on Confirm details you will be given your Driver unlock code. 5) Enter the unlock code on your BlackBerry and click OK to unlock your drivers. You may need to hold the ALT key on your BlackBerry in order to enter numbers rather than letters.
Pairing and connecting the Keyboard. Pairing: 1) Switch the keyboard on to SPP Mode check the green light is flashing next to the switch and that the Bluetooth on the BlackBerry is enabled. 2) On the main application menu of the BlackBerry click on Setup Bluetooth. Click OK and the BlackBerry will search for nearby Bluetooth devices. 3) Once the BlackBerry finishes searching click on KEYBOARD from the list. When it asks for the passkey enter 0000 (four zeros). Once you have finished you will see the keyboard listed under paired devices. Connecting the keyboard: 1) From the main application menu on your BlackBerry click on the Bluetooth Keyboard Icon. You will then see a screen similar to the one below. 2) Click on the Activate Keyboard box and you will see the Keyboard status: change to connecting. Once the keyboard status changes to Connected click on the Reconnection checkbox. (If the keyboard status never changes from connecting please check the troubleshooting guide on the last page).
3) The keyboard will now be connected. If you scroll down to the box where it says keyboard test and type on the keyboard you will see what you type appear in the text box. You can now exit the Bluetooth keyboard software (leave both boxes ticked). From this point forward when you have finished with the keyboard just set the switch to the center position (OFF). When you want to use it again just put the switch back to the left (SPP Mode), wait 5 seconds for it to automatically reconnect and then use it. 4) Optional: Within the driver software you can also set up shortcut keys to the applications on your BlackBerry. To do this scroll down to the function key options, click on the key combination you want to use (i.e. FN+1) and select the application you want to open (i.e. BlackBerry Maps). Now when you press the FN and the number 1 keys together on the keyboard BlackBerry Maps will launch on your BlackBerry. Predefined Shortcut Keys. Function Key Key Combination User Defined Shortcuts [FN] + (1-9) Main Application Menu/Home Screen [FN] + [ESC] Launch Messaging [FN] + Z Launch Contacts [FN] + X Launch Task List [FN] + C Launch Calendar [FN] + V Trackball/Scroll Wheel /Menu Click [FN] + [Right Arrow] Back [FN] + [Left Arrow] Cursor Movement Arrow Keys
Trouble Shooting. Q) When I try to connect the keyboard the keyboard status changes to connecting but never goes to connected. A) This is actually due to a bug within the newer BlackBerry's and older BlackBerry's running 4.2 operating systems. What has happened is that the BlackBerry has not installed the correct services for the keyboard to work. To fix this please follow the steps below. 1) From the main application menu go to "Options" (this might also be "settings" depending on what theme is installed). 2) In the options menu go to "Bluetooth". 3) On the list of paired devices highlight the keyboard and press the Menu button. 4) From the menu select "device properties". 5) At the bottom of the page you should see "Services:" and under this it will probably have nothing listed. 6) Press the menu button and select "refresh service list". After a few seconds you should see "SPP Slave" appears under the listed services. Q) When I try to get my unlock code it says that it has already been registered, I have not used either of the unique codes previously? A) This happens if you internet browser is blocking the cookies on the verification website. After you enter your details and click continue your internet browser removes the information you entered and sends a blank form. To fix this you need to allow cookies for To do this in Internet Explorer 7 please follow the steps in the document linked below: Q) I m connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server and when I try to change the keystroke injection settings the only option I have is Deny. A) In this case your BlackBerry has a restrictive IT policy applied to it and you will need to contact your BES administrator for them to create a software configuration for you. Information on creating and deploying the software configuration on the BES can be found on the link below.
