"APRIL 2018 UPDATE" FOR "WINDOWS 10"
Web location for this presentation: Click on Meeting Notes 2
SUMMARY The "Spring Creators Update" will be a mandatory update for "Windows 10.." in April 2018: HomeGroup will no longer exist. 3
TOPICS "Version 1803" in April 2018 "HomeGroups" is history "Timeline" in "Task View" 4
LIST OF IMPROVEMENTS indows-10-spring-creators-updatefeatures/ 5
"HomeGroup" IS HISTORY Comprehensive Fix for "Server Message Block" File Sharing Woes Use \\<Private IP address> 6
"TIMELINE" IN "TASK VIEW" -close-look-at-the-windows-10- timeline-feature/ 7
"WINDOWS DEFENDER APPLICATION GUARD" indows-10-pro-windows-defenderapplication-guard-support-coming/ 8
TWO KINDS OF FILE SHARING IN "WINDOWS.." "Server Message Block" ("SMB") "HomeGroup" 9
TWO KINDS OF FILE SHARING IN "WINDOWS.." (continued) "Server Message Block" ("SMB") and "HomeGroup" have separate "on/off" listing in "Windows Firewall" 10
TWO KINDS OF FILE SHARING IN "WINDOWS.." (continued) "Server Message Block" ("SMB") and "HomeGroup" have separate sections in File Explorer / Windows Explorer 11
TWO KINDS OF FILE SHARING IN "WINDOWS.." (continued) ("File Explorer" in "Windows 8", and "Windows 10" is analogous to "Windows Explorer" in "Windows XP", "Windows Vista", and "Windows 7") 12
TWO KINDS OF FILE SHARING IN "WINDOWS.." (continued) Computers shared by means of "Server Message Block" ("SMB") show up in "Network" in "File Explorer" Computers shared by "HomeGroup" show up in "HomeGroup" in "File Explorer" 13
HOMEGROUP A "homegroup" does not have a unique name so you have to describe it as "homegroup created by Sally's computer" A "homegroup" is a unique entity with a auto-generated password A Windows 7 or 8.1 or 10 computer can only belong to a single homegroup 14
HOMEGROUP (continued) HomeGroup only works in "Windows 7..", "Windows 8..", or "Windows 10.. HomeGroup does not work in "Windows XP" or "Windows Vista" 15
HOMEGROUP (continued) To turn on or off "HomeGroup file sharing" in Windows 7, 8.1, or 10: Go to the "Control Panel". Double-click on "HomeGroup". Etc. 16
HOMEGROUP (continued) HomeGroup feature will be removed from "Windows 10.." in April 2018 in mandatory version upgrade of Windows 10 per experience/2017/12/19/announcing- windows-10-insider-preview-build pc/#hW5SwRwhJ1xIzcxj.97 17
HOMEGROUP (continued) However, the HomeGroup feature will not be removed from "Windows 7.." and "Windows 8.1.." computers in April 2018 so the net result will be the loss of this feature in "Windows 10.." computers while "Windows 7.." and "Windows 8.1.." computers will still have HomeGroup file sharing inside them 18
HOMEGROUP (continued) This means that after April 2018, "homegroup file sharing" can only be used for sharing files between "Windows 7" and "Windows 8.1" computers, since the version 1803 mandatory upgrade to "Windows 10.." will turn off the "HomeGroup" feature for "Windows 10.." computers. 19
"WIRELESS ISOLATION" Wireless "public networks" such as at Starbucks block "SMB" file sharing and "HomeGroup" file sharing = "Wireless Isolation" Home routers and the router part of broadband modems do not block "SMB" file sharing or "HomeGroup" file sharing (usually) 20
"WIRELESS ISOLATION" (continued) By default, home routers do not have "wireless isolation" with the except that some of the more expensive home routers allow you to have "wireless isolation" for the "guest network" 21
"WIRELESS ISOLATION" (continued) The end result is: Never expect to do "Server Message Block" file sharing or "HomeGroup" file sharing at a "Starbucks" or a hotel 22
"WIRELESS ISOLATION" (continued) To do "Server Message Block" file sharing or "HomeGroup" file sharing at a "Starbucks", bring your own "Wireless Internet Service Provider" ("WISP") router, the attach your Windows.. computers to WISP router's wired Ethernet side or to the WISP router's "wireless access point". 23
"SERVER MESSAGE BLOCK" BASICS Windows XP: SMB 1 Windows Vista: SMB 2, SMB 1 Windows 7: SMB 2, SMB 1 Windows 8: SMB 3, SMB 2, SMB 1 Windows 10: SMB 3, SMB 2, SMB 1 24
"SERVER MESSAGE BLOCK" BASICS File sharing between different versions of "Windows.." use the "lowest common denominator" 25
"SERVER MESSAGE BLOCK" BASICS To do "Server Message Block" file sharing between a "Windows 10.." computer and a "Windows XP.." computer, you have to turn on "SMB 1" in the "Windows 10" computer in "..Windows Features.." in "Programs and Features" in the "Control Panel" 26
"SERVER MESSAGE BLOCK" BASICS To do "Server Message Block" file sharing between "Windows XP.." computer and higher version of "Windows", you have to change the "workgroup" of the "Windows XP" computer from "MSHOME" to "WORKGROUP" 27
FILE SHARING OPTIONS FOR VARIOUS EDITIONS OF "WINDOWS.." Windows XP to and from Windows XP: Use SMB (version 1) 28
FILE SHARING OPTIONS (continued) Windows XP to and from "Windows Vista" and higher: Use SMB (version 1) after changing "workgroup" in "Windows XP" to "WORKGROUP" 29
FILE SHARING OPTIONS (continued) Windows 7 to and from Windows 7 or Windows 8: Use SMB (version 2) or use HomeGroup 30
FILE SHARING OPTIONS (continued) Windows 8 to and from Windows 7 or Windows 8: Use SMB (version 2) or use HomeGroup 31
FILE SHARING OPTIONS (continued) Windows 7 to and from Windows 10: Use SMB (version 2) or use HomeGroup until April 2018 when the mandatory "version 1803" upgrade for Windows10 kills off HomeGroup for Windows 10 32
FILE SHARING OPTIONS (continued) Windows 8 to and from Windows 10: Use SMB (version 3) or use HomeGroup until April 2018 when the mandatory "version 1803" upgrade for Windows10 kills off HomeGroup for Windows 10 33
FILE SHARING OPTIONS (continued) Windows 10 to and from Windows 10: Use SMB (version 3) or use HomeGroup until April 2018 when the mandatory "version 1803" upgrade for Windows10 kills off HomeGroup for Windows 10 34
RUNNING BOTH SMB AND HOMEGROUP IN THE SAME COMPUTER IS BAD!! If you run both "Server Message Block" file sharing and "HomeGroup" file sharing in the same Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, you will get some strange and unpredictable effects: Sometimes the entire C:\Users folder is shared to others!!! 35
COMPREHENSIVE FIX FOR "SERVER MESSAGE BLOCK" FILE SHARING WOES Step 1000: Perform steps similar to those listed at rdsig/filesharing/2-xp-access- Win10-share.pdf Step 2000: Do a "System Restore" to a prior "restore point" 36
COMPREHENSIVE FIX FOR "SERVER MESSAGE BLOCK" FILE SHARING WOES (continued) Step 3000: Do a "refresh", a "reset", or a fresh installation of the "Windows.." operating system, etc. 37
USE \\<PRIVATE IP ADDRESS> After sharing a file or folder in the "target" computer, use it's private IP address to "brute force" the computer that you are using to get the computer that you are using to find the shared files 38
