1 Name Computers Elective Class period Date '-"" Understanding the Microsoft Windows GUI Modem operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Red Hat Linux all include a Graphical User Interface, or "GUI" for ShOli(pronounced "goo-ey"). The term GUI refers to everything we see on the screen: the icons, menus, toolbars; it also refers to how the user interacts with the GUI: using the mouse and keyboard to select, move and open items on the screen. In this activity, you will explore how various parts ofthe MS Windows GUI work, by completing the following activities. Show the teacher what you have done at each step where directed to do so. Part I: The Windows Desktop: This is a "screenshot" of the Windows Desktop: - ' / 1. Circle or number, then label the following items: 1) Gray Taskbar along the bottom of the screen, which shows you what windows are open. 2) Start button, which then shows you the Start Menu. 3) My Documents icon, in which you save all your files. 4) My Computer icon, in which you find icons for the various disk drives in your computer. S) Internet Explorer icon, which launches the web browser application software program. 6) The "sys tray," which shows icons for :grogramsthat are running "in the bac~ound." 2. 4 Name Computers Elective Class period Understanding Windows in Microsoft Word Part I: The Parts of a Word Window: Date Launch MS Word, then follow the instructions and answer the next set of questions. (It may be easiest to do many of these activities with the Word window maximized. This is what Microsoft Word (v. 2003) looks like when it is first opened: 1. Write the numbers below next to each of the following items: 1) Title Bar 8) Horizontal Scrollbar 2) Minimize, restore and close buttons 9) Vertical Scrollbar 3) Main Menu 10) Up and down arrows 4) Standard Toolbar 11) View buttons 5) Formatting Toolbar 12) Status bar 6) Horizontal Ruler 13) Help Assistant 7) Vertical Ruler

5 2. Go to the View menu and deselect Ruler, to make the horizontal ruler disappear. 3. Go back to View and make the ruler reappear. Show your teacher that you have completed questions 1 3:. Part II: Customizing the Toolbars: 4. Roll the mouse cursor (arrow) over the toolbar buttons and see how it shows you which button you are about to select. Briefly describe what do you see (what happens to the button): 5. When Word first opens, two toolbars are open: the Standard Toolbar and the Formatting Toolbar. However, the two toolbars are sharing one line, and so you cannot see all the buttons on either toolbar. Roll the mouse over the chevron (>>) at the end of the standard toolbar. What words appear: Click on the chevron and describe what happens: 6. You can move the toolbars so that they each have their own line. Roll the mouse over the raised line at the left edge of the formatting toolbar (just to the right of the chevron). Notice how the cursor becomes a black 4-headed arrow. Click-and-drag downward, to move the Formatting toolbar so that it is on its own line. 7. Go to View Toolbars on the menu, and click on Tables and Borders. The Tables and Borders toolbar will appear, in its own window. Click on its blue title bar and drag it to the left until it jumps and becomes a toolbar along the left side of the window. 8. Go to View Toolbars again, and click on a few more toolbars. Use the mouse to move the toolbars around, so that you have: 1) The standard and formatting toolbars each on its own line across the top of the window; 2) 1 row with two toolbars sharing the same row across the top of the window; 3) At least 1 toolbar along each of the other sides of the window (left, right, bottom). 9. Click on the down arrow at the right end of the Standard Toolbar. What appears: 10. Click on the down arrow again, then roll over add or remove buttons. Add the Close button to the tool bar. Show your teacher that you have completed questions 3 10:.
