1 Area of Interest (AOI) to KML The Integrated Land & Resource Registry (ILRR) offers a bit more functionality for Keyhole Markup Language (KML) creation and usage than Mineral Titles Online (MTO). Both MTO and ILRR use the same mapping framework known as Common Web Mapping (CWM). If you have used MTO before you will find the tools and navigations to be very similar. KML is a type of file that stores geographic data and is commonly used in applications such as Google Earth. This guide will walk the user through exporting a KML file from ILRR based on Area of Interest (AOI) or by identifying a specific feature in a dataset. Furthermore, this guide will detail how to import a KML file into the ILRR. a) Exporting an AOI Using the Draw Tools 1) Open any web browser and navigate to the Integrated Land & Resource Registry.

2 2) Locate the Logon to ILRR and Guest User buttons on the top right of the page. Public users can sign in with a Basic BCeID using the Guest User button. Internal Governments users can sign in using the Logon to ILRR button. A user holding a Business BCeID may use either button. Click the button that best suits your needs. To obtain a BCeID, please follow the instructions found here. 3) Guest Users will be prompted to accept the ILRR Terms and Conditions of Use. If you are a Guest User, please read through and understand the terms and conditions before accepting. When prompted, input your username (IDIR, basic BCeID, or Business BCeID) and password. Internal Government employees and Business BCeID holders are able to use an advanced version of the ILRR. Additional functions of use include Query Interest Record, Survey Parcel Search, Custom Status, My Queries and Notifications, Public Reports, and Business Reports. For the purpose of this demonstration, navigate and click the Map Inquiry button.

3 4) Your pop-up ILRR CWM Map Viewer window should look similar to the image below. For the purpose of this guide, we have pre-chosen an Area of Interest (AOI). In reality, the ILRR CWM Map Viewer will display an overview of the entire province of British Columbia.

4 5) Navigate to the AOI Tools button as indicated by the red arrow. A toolbar will open consisting of various AOI Tools including AOI selection tools, a geometry calculator, and import/export functions (indicated by the red box). Select any of the AOI selection tools and create a polygon of your area of interest. The Draw Rectangle tool was used in the example below.

5 6) Navigate to the Export Geometry Tool as indicated by the red arrow. A prompt will open outlining the export tool (indicated by the red box). In the Format drop-down list, choose KML (Google Earth) and click the Export button. 7) Exporting geometry in the ILRR yields a program script. In order to convert the script into a KML file, you must open it in a text editor such as notepad. Highlight the script and copy it (Ctrl + C).

6 8) Open a blank text editor, we will use notepad. Paste your copied script into the document (Ctrl + V). Navigate to File and click Save As. In order to convert the text into a KML file we must set the extension to.kml through notepad. In the Save As prompt, open the drop-down list for the Save as type. Select All Files (indicated by the red circle). This will allow us to save the script under any extension. Under File name choose your output path and name your file. At the end of your File name add.kml (indicated by the red arrow). Click Save. Close your text editor. 9) Navigate to the directory where you saved your KML file. You`ll notice that the file now has a Google Earth icon. Right click on the file, click Open With, and choose Google Earth. You should see something similar to the example below.

7 b) Exporting an AOI Using the Identify Features Tool 1) Open the ILRR. If you do not recall how to do so, please see steps 1-4 of a) Exporting an AOI Using the Draw Tools. 2) Navigate to the horizontal toolbar below the British Columbia logo and click on the Identify Features button (indicated by the red arrow). Below the toolbar click on the drop-down list and choose the layer you wish to export as a KML (indicated by the red box). Move your cursor to the AOI and click anywhere within the polygon. An Identify Features menu should become visible to the right of the window. 3) Under the identify menu click the Copy to AOI button (indicated by the red arrow). If done correctly, the polygon you identified should become highlighted in yellow.

8 4) The remaining steps for exporting the KML follow the same protocol as outlined above. Refer to steps 6-9 of a) Exporting an AOI Using the Draw Tools for in-depth instructions. Importing a KML into ILRR 1) Open the ILRR. If you do not recall how to do so, please see steps 1-4 of a) Exporting an AOI Using the Draw Tools. 2) Navigate to the top toolbar and click the AOI Tools button (indicated by the red arrow). The AOI Tools toolbar will open directly below the first toolbar. Click on the Import Geometry button (indicated by a red box).

9 3) On the right side of the window the Import Geometry menu will open (indicated by the red box). Click on the Browse button (indicated by the red arrow). Navigate to a KML. For this demonstration we will use our previously created KML AOI_Example.kml. Double click on the KML to open. Navigate to the Import button within the Import Geometry menu and click on the button.

10 4) An AOI polygon of the imported KML will be added to the map viewer. Since our KML is imported as an AOI polygon, it follows the same rules as an AOI polygon. Therefore, if you clear the polygon using the AOI Clear button (indicated by the red arrow) your polygon will be removed from the map viewer. Once cleared, you must re-import the polygon as an AOI polygon using the Import Geometry function.
